.SYNOPSIS...A shortwave crossing the area will promote one more day
of moist and cold conditions with increasing cloud cover and drizzle
along the coast late this afternoon. Warm and dry weather will build
in midweek with highs above 70 even along the coast.

.DISCUSSION...Wind has gradually turned offshore today as high
pressure and associated thermal trough has begun to build over the
eastern Pacific. This offshore influence has helped keep the coast
mostly clear overnight despite weakening northerly wind. Slightly
drier conditions have also allowed for cooler temperatures this
morning with interior valleys forecast to reach the upper 30s by
sunrise.
A very subtle upper level shortwave will cross the area today as a
cutoff low continues to push east of the Great Basin. This shortwave
will likely be unable to produce little more than drizzle along the
coast but at the very least will turn wind back onshore and stream
in high clouds and increased marine influence for interior valleys.
This will likely aid in patchy valley fog Tuesday morning along with
a pseudo marine layer along the coast.
High pressure will build in offshore in earnest as a solid ridge of
high pressure moves in late Tuesday into Wednesday. The setup of the
ridge will generally produce easterly wind, especially for the
northern part of the area. That said, a generally weak pressure
gradient will keep easterly wind gentle at most. Still, even gentle
wind will be enough to shunt marine influence offshore and delay the
afternoon sea breeze. This will allow for noticeable coastal warming
with he ECMWF EFI highlighting above normal temperatures all along
the coast. In Eureka, the NBM has a 50% chance of temperatures
above 73 on Wednesday, which would make it the warmest day of the
year so far. At the same time, interior temperatures will reach the
90s with generally hot and dry conditions. While no where near
recording breaking, the conditions will be solidly above average.
As high pressure continues to push inland, heating and drying will
persist for the interior with NBM placing a 50% chance of at least
isolated high temperatures near 95. At the same time, the movement
of a thermal trough more onshore will cool the coast with a shallow
but increasingly strong marine layer. In the extended, 80% of
cluster ensembles agree that a deep upper level trough will approach
the shore by next Monday. Such a feature will bring cooler and more
moist weather. While long range guidance shows moisture generally
pulling north of the area, at least light widespread wetting rain is
likely (65% chance). /JHW

.AVIATION...Patches of IFR due to low clouds early this morning
mostly in North Coast river valleys. Fleeting low ceilings will be
possible around Humboldt Bay near KACV early this morning.
Otherwise, VFR is expected to prevail today with high and mid clouds
spreading over the area from the NW through the day. Less gusty
north winds today at coastal terminals, but still a few localized
gust around 20 kt for KCEC. Shallow moisture will spread southward
down the coast this evening and overnight bringing IFR and LIFR cigs
and vsbys to coastal terminals.

.MARINE...North winds and steep waves will continue to steadily
diminish today through this evening in response to a weak front that
will approach from the NW this afternoon. Seas will remain
sufficiently steep and elevated to warrant an advisory through this
evening. High pressure will rebuild behind the front on Tuesday and
northerly winds and steep waves will increase again during the
afternoon and evening. A gale watch has been hoisted for the outer
waters, especially for the northern outer waters as gradients
tighten between the offshore ridge and a thermal trough. A thermal
trough will begin to build westward out over the waters on Wednesday
and the strongest northerlies will shift into the NW portion of the
outer waters north of Cape Mendocino. The aerial coverage of the
gales appears to diminish below 50% on Wed. Otherwise, winds will
diminish and become light and variable Thursday and Friday. A long
period NW swell will build late today through Tuesday and then
subside for the remainder of the week.

.FIRE WEATHER...A shortwave crossing the area will bring cool and
moist weather through Tuesday. A thermal trough developing offshore
around Wednesday will bring the possibility of dry offshore wind
midweek. Currently, the pattern will likely only support moderate
easterly wind 10 to 15 mph at most thanks to little inland support
from a distant vertically stacked trough. Even at the 75th
percentile, NBM shows only the highest and most exposed ridges
reaching 20 mph. ECMWF EFI is not highlighting any unusually strong
wind outside of the Sacramento Valley. Still, conditions will be hot
and dry with morning RH recovery as low as 50 percent, afternoon RH
in the teens and highs in the low 90s. The possibility of stronger
winds will need to be watched closely. Hot and dry conditions with
poor recoveries will continue late in the week though wind will
