.SYNOPSIS...Afternoon thunderstorms will develop again today in the
interior, mainly over Trinity County. Slow moving storms may produce
locally heavy rain. Otherwise, dry weather and below seasonal average
temperatures are forecast through Thursday. Above normal
temperatures will return on Friday and continue for the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...Extensive low clouds pushed well into the interior
overnight in response to rapid marine layer deepening. The bulk
of the low clouds in the interior should erode in response to
daytime heating and mixing. Most coastal areas probably will not
clear out, even deterministic high resolution models continue to
depict low clouds busting up in response to increasing northerlies
offshore over the waters, with cloud free areas propagating
southward off Cape Blanco and Cape Mendocino. The inversion will
remain robust and increasing northerlies will only result in more
low cloud generation over Humboldt Bay. Clouds will spread northward
up the coast once northerlies decouple.
Thunderstorms will once again fire up over the interior mountains
with daytime heating today. Most of the activity will be in
Trinity County, though a few cells may develop over the mountain
peaks in NE Mendocino and northern Lake Counties. NAM-BUFKIT
profiles indicate surface-based buoyant energy near 900J/kg,
lifted indices of -3C or less and equilibrium levels near 28kft
during peak heating today. With precipitable water near 1 inch
and slow storm motion, locally heavy downpours will certainly be
possible with hourly rates from 0.40-0.50in/hr.
The cut-off to our south offshore central/southern California this
morning will begin to eject eastward tonight and into the Desert
SW on Wednesday in response to an upstream trough. Increasing
southwesterly flow aloft will bring drier air into the region on
Wednesday. This should end the threat for storms, though isolated
showers or weak cells will still be possible over the highest
peaks in NE Trinity and over the Yolla Bolly wilderness area with
daytime heating. A shorter wave-length trough embedded in the
larger scale trough will move across the area Thu morning and
should deepen the marine layer again and perhaps generate coastal
drizzle again.
500mb clusters and raw ensemble means continue to indicate ridging
and higher heights toward the end of the week. We should see some
warming toward the end of the week, however northerly winds and
marine air will severely hamper the warming for NW California
river valleys. There is still some spread in 850mb temperatures
over the weekend, but both the GEFS and EC ENS means indicate
850mb temperatures increasing to 20C or more. Thus, mid 80's or
lower 90's are probable for the hottest interior valleys. Another
trough will approach late next weekend and may create favorable
thermodynamic profiles conducive to interior thunderstorms for
the first weekend of June. This potential for storms will persist
into early next week, mostly for Trinity county.

.AVIATION...Stratus coverage is extensive this morning. Ceiling
heights are IFR, and dipping into LIFR at times. Northerly winds
will be on the increase throughout the day, and this will begin to
slowly disrupt the marine layer. CEC and UKI have the best shot for
diurnal improvement, but stratus will remain mostly embedded around
Humboldt Bay and the ACV VCTY. There is some model optimism for less
stratus for CEC tonight, but the setup and climatology favors
southerly return flow to direct it back over the terminal.

.MARINE...A trend of increasing northerly winds is underway.
Advisory level seas and winds remain in the outer waters, and will
spread to the inner zones this evening. Gale force gusts will
develop in the outer zones by early Wednesday morning. Gale strength
gusts to around 40 kts will expand into portions of Northern Inner
zone and the majority of the Southern Inner zone by Wednesday
afternoon. Gale Watches have been hoisted. Steep, hazardous seas up
to 13 will be generated from these winds, and will slowly subside
Thursday night and into Friday as the northerlies ease somewhat. The
northerlies will strengthen again through the weekend.
