AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
A series of two storm systems will bring widespread precipitation
to the region Sunday through Tuesday night. Heavy snow is expected
in the mountains along with some interior valley locations.
Heaviest snow is expected Monday through Tuesday night.
Additionally, isolated thunderstorms with small hail are likely.
Drier conditions will return on Wednesday with cold overnight low
temperatures.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
After a brief period of rather nice weather across the region today,
stormy conditions are expected to return tonight when the first in a
series of two systems moves through the region. Cloud cover will
increase through the evening hours with precipitation spreading over
Northwest California overnight. This front should pass through the
region rather quickly, moving southeast and out of the area through
the afternoon hours. Total liquid equivalent precipitation of a
quarter to a half inch is expected from northern Mendocino north
through Trinity, Humboldt, and Del Norte counties while a tenth to a
quarter inch is more likely farther south. Snow levels will
generally be around 2000-2500 feet with 2 to 6 inches of snow
expected, except in southern Mendocino and Lake counties where snow
levels will be closer to 3000 feet. A winter weather advisory
remains in effect from 1 am tonight to 1 pm Sunday for areas areas
above these elevations north of Clear Lake.

A much more notable system will begin to impact the area Sunday
night as strong southerly winds increase ahead of an advancing front
and another round of precipitation expands over the area. This
system is looking quite potent with very cold air aloft resulting in
rather robust instability. Thunderstorms will be possible with and
following the frontal passage. Any strong shower or thunderstorm
will be capable of producing small hail which could result in hail
covered roadways Monday through Tuesday.

Additionally, gusty winds of 40 to 60 mph will be possible on the
coastal headlands and ridgetops of Del Norte, Humboldt, and northern
Mendocino counties while lesser gusts of 30 to 50 mph will be
possible on some other exposed ridges of southern Mendocino and Lake
counties as the strong cold front quickly moves through the region
Monday morning. These winds will still be ongoing as precipitation
begins, and at elevations above the snow level, a brief window where
near blizzard conditions could develop. Blizzard conditions require
snow, wind gusts in excess of 35 mph, and visibility less than a
quarter mile for 3 hours. The snow and wind could overlap for 2 to 6
hours before winds rapidly subside. Opted to not upgrade to a
blizzard warning only because of the brief window for the conditions
to develop, but it wouldn't be a surprise to have nearly impossible
travel at the beginning of this event.

Speaking of snow levels and snowfall, very heavy snow is expected,
especially with the frontal passage Monday morning. A window of
snowfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour will be possible at
elevations over 2000-2500 feet for a few hours as the front sweeps
through the region from northwest to southeast. Snow levels will
then drop through the afternoon into the evening hours to between
2000 feet in the southern part of the area to 1000 feet in the
north. Widespread showers will develop in a very convective
environment. Isolated thunderstorms, including the potential for
thundersnow, are expected. This again will bring heavy snow to the
interior of the region Monday afternoon through Monday night. There
is still uncertainty as to how low snow levels go, but right now the
greatest impacts are expected to be at elevations over 1500 feet in
all counties except Trinity where snow levels will likely remain
around 1000 feet. Stay tuned for updates as more high resolution
guidance arrives.

Showers will continue through Tuesday into Tuesday night. Total
precipitation of 1-2 inches of liquid equivalent precipitation is
expected over this 48 hour time frame, with locally higher amounts
up to 3 inches in the mountains of Del Norte County. This will
result in 1-3 feet of snowfall at elevations over 3000 feet and
lesser amounts down to 2000 feet or lower. Accumulating hail will
also be possible down to sea level but how numerous is still
uncertain. If guidance shows a high probability of many showers
producing small hail we may also need to issue a winter weather
advisory for all elevations in Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino
counties where these conditions are most likely. At this time actual
snow down to sea level is unlikely.

This storm system has the potential to be very high impact for the
region with numerous power outages caused from the heavy snow load
and gusty winds. Travel may be nearly impossible over many of the
highway passes on 299, 36, and 3 for several hours with the frontal
passage Monday morning and additional heavy snow will result in
difficult travel beyond that time frame. If snow levels fall lower
than expected highway 101 in northern Mendocino, southern Humboldt,
and Prairie Creek Summit could be impacted. And due to the heavy
rates, if the snow levels are off, heavy snow could pile up quickly.
Better to be prepared and hope for the best than to be caught off
guard.

Showers will decrease late Tuesday night into Wednesday as an upper
low off to the north of the region finally moves east and flow
becomes more northerly over Northwest California. This will usher in
drier air and the potential for a couple nights of cold overnight
lows. Wednesday night may see lows fall to below freezing again at
the coast.

The next storm of note may arrive late in the week into next
weekend. /RPA

.AVIATION...
Clouds are streaming in from the south today, wrapping around on
the backside of a departing low. The environment will be favorable
for stratus development over the region ahead of an approaching
cold front. Southerly winds will become gusty after midnight ahead
of the front at ACV and CEC. MVFR ceilings will develop this
afternoon and evening, and then slowly lower. IFR CIGS and VIS
will develop after midnight as light to moderate rain arrives with
the front.

.MARINE...
An area of northerly winds over western portions of the outer
waters will dissipate this afternoon as a low pressure slowly
departs. A jet of strong southerlies gusting up to 30 kts will
develop in the Northern Inner waters early Sunday morning ahead of
a cold front. Started a Small Craft Advisory earlier to cover
these winds in this zone. A swath of northerlies gusting up to 30
kts will quickly develop and sweep through the waters beginning
early Sunday morning behind the front.

On Sunday, a developing area of low pressure will move SE from the
Gulf of Alaska into the Pac NW alongside a strong N Pacific high of
1045 mb. An expansive gale in fetch and areal coverage of NW winds
will ride SE along these systems. A large mid period WNW swell will
develop with this system. Combined sea heights and surf heights are
currently modeled to reach up to 21 ft with this swell. This would
be just shy of High Surf Advisory criteria, but northern buoys
should be closely watched as the forecast may not fully capture the
wave size. This southerly gale will quickly move in to our local
waters Sunday night when Gale Warnings reside for all waters. Large,
hazardous seas can certainly be expected Monday into Tuesday from
the gale and mid period swell. Wind gusts will be in the higher end
gale criteria to isolated storm force gusts up 48kt in the northern
waters during the peak of the gale late Sunday into very early
Monday morning.
