.SYNOPSIS...A North Pacific High will keep skies clear and
temperatures mild into early next week. By early to mid week, a low
pressure system with colder air will bring lower temperatures
throughout the region, rain and low elevation snow. The low pressure
system will impact the region through the end of the week.

.DISCUSSION...Currently a high pressure system situated in the
Northeast Pacific is impacting Northwest California and will
continue into Monday. As a result, clear skies and mild temperatures
are expected to dominate over the weekend. High temperatures in the
interior portions of the region are forecast to be in the mid to
high 60s by late this weekend and into Monday afternoon. Also, the
EFI indicates abnormally high temperatures, especially for interior
southern Mendocino County and Lake County making the likelihood of
highs of up to 70 in these areas more probable. Periods of fog are
also expected the next few nights in interior valleys and around
Humboldt Bay. By Tuesday, an abrupt pattern shift is expected to
occur.
Most ensembles and models indicate that a low pressure system from
the north of our region will move down the West Coast and impact
Northwestern California through the middle to latter portion of this
coming week. Cold Arctic air is expected to infiltrate into our
region as the system moves south. The EFI indicates the potential
for lower than average temperatures for the whole region Tuesday and
into the end of the work week. By mid to late next week, low
temperatures have the potential to reach below freezing to even the
mid 20s at the coast, while interior temperatures could be in the
low 20s to high 10s. Also, gusty northwesterly winds are forecast to
occur by mid morning Tuesday behind the cold front associated with
the low pressure system. Currently, the wind gusts for later next
week seem to be just below wind advisory or very marginal wind
advisory criteria.
Another threat this system imposes is rain and the possibility of
lower elevation snow. Higher amounts of precipitation are
anticipated to be concentrated mostly in Del Norte County and
Humboldt County north of Cape Mendocino, while lower amounts are
expected for most of Trinity County and Mendocino and Lake counties.
Increasing instability and cold low-level temperatures will also
bring the threat of small hail. Highway passes will most likely be
impacted by heavy snow in higher elevations and more likely small
hail along the coast. Snow levels are expected to drop quickly
behind the cold front. As of now, NBM indicates greater than a 40%
chance of at least a dusting of snow along the coast north of Cape
Mendocino. However, this scenario is too far in the future to be
certain. As a result, models and ensembles need to be closely
monitored in the coming days to determine how likely snow at the
coast will be. Otherwise, showery precipitation is forecast to
continue into Thursday, with the potential for additional snow
accumulation as well as small hail. /JLW

.AVIATION...This morning offshore flow and high pressure is mainly
bringing VFR conditions to NW CA. The exception is the Eel river
valley from Fortuna to Miranda where some low clouds have developed.
These have started to expand to the north just in from the coast and
may briefly impact KACV this morning. Confidence is low and for now
just have SCT low clouds. KCEC is seeing lower vis occasionally, but
this appears to be due to sea spray so have only dropped the vis to
4 miles. Breezy conditions are expected this afternoon and another
mostly clear night is expected tonight. /MKK

.MARINE...High pressure is in place over the eastern Pacific this
morning. The gradient on the east side of this will tighten
gradually through Monday morning increasing the winds. Gale force
gusts are expected in the northern outer waters early Sunday morning
and these will spread across the area through the day on Sunday. The
gale watch remains in effect, there is still some uncertainty on the
timing in the northern waters. In the southern waters it is only
borderline gale force. So will wait for another model run or so to
tweak the timing and potentially upgrade to warning. These near
gales and gales will bring large steep seas, building to nearly 13
feet at 10 seconds.
Winds will diminish Monday and Monday night, but this will be
shortlived as the winds increase again Tuesday afternoon. Additional
gale force northerly winds are possible Tuesday night and Wednesday.

likely remain close to 20 kt.
In addition to the wind driven waves there is a fairly active wave
environment. Currently building in is a northwest swell around 10
feet at 13 seconds. This is slightly larger than expected so have
increased the wave forecast for today and started the small craft
advisories in the inner waters this morning. This will slowly
diminish through the afternoon and tonight. Later tonight another
swell is expected to start moving in, it will initially be around 3
feet at 18 seconds. This will build slow and combine with the
existing swell Sunday afternoon around 6 feet at 15 seconds. This
swell will diminish on Monday and early Tuesday and the waters will
mainly be dominated by the wind driven waves.
Late Monday into Tuesday the high pressure strengthens over the NE
PAC and a large area of northerly winds develops off Washington and
British Columbia. This looks to send some very large waves down to
the area Tuesday night and Wednesday. These will combine with the
locally generated waves for combined seas just over 20 feet. The
period will likely be around 12 seconds for the swell, but models
are struggle to delineate the two wave groups. These waves are
expected to slowly diminish Thursday through the end of the week.
