.SYNOPSIS...Mild weather occurring today will transition to cool
and windy during Monday as a strong cold front moves south across
the region. Showers will also spread south across Northwest
California Monday night into Tuesday. Accumulating snow will
subsequently develop across the coastal foothills, while small
hail and a few thunderstorms occur near the coast. Dry weather and
very cold morning temperatures are then expected on Wednesday.

.DISCUSSION...Very pleasant middle February weather was occurring
across Northwest California this afternoon, with clear skies
observed region wide, and high temperatures ranging from around 70
at Ukiah to the mid/upper 50s along the coast. This period of
nice weather will be brief as a cold upper-level shortwave trough
digs south from the Gulf of Alaska to OR/WA during the next 24
hours. Strong low-level cold air advection will subsequently
spread across NRN CA during Monday afternoon and evening, which
which when combined with a tightening surface pressure gradient,
will aid in north-northwest winds gusting to around 50 mph across
exposed terrain in Humboldt, Trinity, Mendocino, and Lake
Counties. The atmosphere is then forecast to gradually saturate
through the dendritic growth zone during Monday night and Tuesday
morning. As that takes place, showers will increase in coverage
and intensity, particularly over Del Norte and Humboldt Counties.
In addition, snow levels will fall to around 1000 feet MSL as 700
mb temperatures cool to around -15 to -20 C. Several inches of
snow will become probable as a result across the coastal
foothills, with a few flakes possibly mixing in with rain near sea
level. Otherwise, steepening lapse rates, MUCAPE values near 100
J/kg, and cold EL temperatures will support a threat for isolated
thunderstorms as well as small hail accumulations across area
roadways near the coast.
Midlevel heights are forecast to quickly rise during Tuesday
night, which will lead to rapid shower dissipation, clearing
skies, and strong radiational cooling at the surface across the
entire region. Wednesday morning temperatures will become very
cold as a result, with lows falling into the mid to upper 20s near
the coast, and locally into the upper teens across wind sheltered
interior valleys. Thereafter, dry weather will occur going into
Wednesday afternoon as an upper ridge shifts east across the West
Coast. Another trough is then forecast to enter the NERN PAC
Thursday and Friday, and will aid in increasing light rain
probabilities.

.AVIATION...MVFR conditions may continue into mid afternoon at
the coastal terminals. However, when moderate northerly breezes
start up by mid afternoon, VFR conditions will prevail. Winds are
expected to be especially gusty along coastal Del Norte County
this afternoon and into tonight with potential gusts of up to 20
kts. As a result, sea spray may cause sporadic MVFR conditions.
After the winds die down around ACV by late evening, MVFR
conditions are expected to dominate into the night. Lower ceilings
and moderate low-level windshear are also forecast overnight for
ACV. Stronger north winds are expected by tomorrow afternoon for
all terminals.

.MARINE...Strong northerlies with gale gusts will continue
overnight for the outer waters. Then after a frontal passage
tomorrow, winds in the northern outer waters are expected to drop
to just below the gale force criteria; however, gusts are expected
to be right at 30 kts throughout tomorrow. Winds in the southern
waters are anticipated to maintain gale force gusts throughout the
rest of tomorrow and into Tuesday afternoon. By mid week, winds
are expected to drop below advisory criteria. Steep and elevated
wind waves will dominate into mid week, with a short period NW
swell building in tomorrow night and peaking on Tuesday. The
combined wave heights could be at 20 ft by Tuesday.
