Key Messages:

- Warm and windy conditions are expected tomorrow and Friday.

- Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon
  across most of the region, with the highest risk area east of US
  Highway 65.

- Near critical fire weather conditions will be possible Friday
  afternoon, primarily south of the KC metro.

- Cooler on Saturday, but high temperatures rebound back into the
  70s by Sunday.

Discussion:

The current synoptic weather pattern across the CONUS is defined
by a closed mid level low centered just off the coast of northern
California with troughing across the western US, ridging
downstream of the trough over the Plains, with another trough
extending south from Ontario into the Great Lakes region.
Temperatures across the region this afternoon are in the 50s,
which is warmer than the previous couple days but still slightly
below seasonal normals. Generally tranquil weather continues into
the overnight, with light winds and low temperatures in the mid
30s to low 40s.

By early tomorrow afternoon the western trough starts making
eastward progress, increasing southwesterly mid level flow over
the region. A surface low begins to develop near the CO/KS border,
with strong southerly low level flow taking hold over the area.
Southerly winds begin to increase from west to east by late
morning, strengthening further into the afternoon hours, with
sustained winds up to 25-30 mph and gusts as high as 45 mph. As
such, a wind advisory has been issued for areas west of US Highway
65 from 4 pm tomorrow through 7 am Friday. High temperatures
tomorrow are forecast to reach the upper 60s. Warmer temperatures
and especially the strong southerly winds may create elevated fire
weather conditions, but relative humidity should remain above 45
percent, keeping fire weather concerns tempered. There will be a
chance for isolated showers and storms tomorrow evening/night, but
any storm that manages to initiate should remain sub-severe.

By 7 AM Friday morning, the surface low is progged to be centered
near Sioux City, IA with a cold front extending to the south
southwest through SE Nebraska and into central Kansas, with an
expansive warm sector in place across our forecast area.
Meanwhile aloft, the 500 mb continues to deepen over north central
Nebraska with a 100+ knot 500 mb cyclonic jet streak nosing into
the area. Positive vorticity advection and rapid height falls
will occur as the trough makes its final approach, with the cold
front moving through from west to east Friday afternoon.
Convection allowing models suggest storm initiation by early
afternoon out ahead of the cold front near the MO/KS border.
Storms may briefly be discrete at first, but fairly rapid upscale
growth should occur yielding a line (or broken line) of storms
that quickly move west to east through the forecast area. 60
degree dewpoints and temperatures in the low to mid 70s should
allow for a sector of ML CAPE between 1000 and 2000 J/KG to
develop, and the 100+ knot mid level jet streak will create plenty
of deep layer wind shear allowing for well organized updrafts.
Low level wind shear also would allow for the potential for
tornadoes. Thus, all severe hazards will be in play, but given the
anticipated rapid upscale growth into a squall line, wind will
likely be the primary hazard. As of now, SPC has an enhanced risk
(3 out of 5) for areas along and east of a Lamoni to Clinton line,
with a slight risk (2 out of 5) as far west as NW MO and the
MO/KS border. In addition to the severe threat, some sort of wind
headline may also be needed due to the strong southerly winds
ahead of the front as well as the strong westerly winds behind the
front, with non-thunderstorm gusts as high as 50 mph. Relative
humidity will also rapidly drop behind the frontal passage, with
RH values as low as 30 percent for far eastern KS/far western MO
south of Interstate 70 by mid to late afternoon. This will yield
near critical fire weather conditions, and as such a fire weather
watch has been issued for this area for Friday afternoon and early
evening.

Cooler temperatures are expected behind the front and on the back
side of the mid level trough for Saturday, with highs in the 50s
expected. Temperatures rebound quickly, however, with highs
returning to the 70s for Sunday and Monday and dry conditions
generally persisting. As we head into Tuesday/Wednesday, models
are hinting at the possibility of another trough not terribly
different than Friday's moving across the Plains, giving us
perhaps another chance at thunderstorms.

VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the morning hours,
before low to mid ceilings increase in coverage late morning and
through the afternoon. By early afternoon, anticipate a drop to
MVFR for all sites, with MVFR ceilings persisting through the
remainder of the period. Winds will be the primary concern today
as southeast and south winds increase steadily through the day,
with sustained winds around 15 gusting 25 kts by late morning,
increasing to sustained 20 gust 35 kts by the afternoon and for
much of the remaining TAF period. Additionally, widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms are possible overnight, but low
confidence in coverage and timing, will keep mention out of TAFs
for now.

Gusty winds approaching 40-45 MPH are expected starting Thursday
afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are expected late Thursday night
into Friday morning. A second round of storms is expected Friday
afternoon and evening with a potential for some of those storms to be
strong to severe. There is higher confidence in severe storms east
of I-35. Damaging winds and large hail remain the primary concerns.
