  ahead of the approaching upper low. Sustained winds 20 to 30 mph
  gusting to 50 mph are looking likely.

Detailed Discussion...

05z Surface analysis reveals a sizable surface ridge spread across
the region, with a trailing surface trough/cold front through
northern Iowa into Nebraska. This feature is associated with the
progression of an upper short wave moving into the western Great
Lakes region, riding along the broader upper trough over eastern
Canada. With the front sinking southward toward the MO/IA border
through dawn, it will bring increased cloud cover across the
northern portions of Missouri and adjacent northeastern Kansas. This
front will settle through midday along the US-36 corridor and will
have an influence on temperatures across the region. With southerly
flow and partly sunny skies along and south of the boundary,
temperatures will easily reach the mid 50s to lower 60s. Along and
north of the boundary, temperatures will only top out in the upper
40s to lower 50s.

Through Thursday, a steep ridge will develop across the region
downstream of the highly amplified western trough. Anticipate a very
strong jet streak rounding out the base of the trough into the
central Plains through the day. GFS and NAM Bufkit soundings
suggest steep low level lapse rates, enough to tap into the 40 to
50 kt H850 jet through the afternoon and overnight into early
Friday. Prolonged windy conditions of sustained winds 20 to 30 mph
gusting 35 to 45 mph are possible. These south-southwest winds
will persist through Friday afternoon until the Pacific front
finally pushes east by late afternoon/evening. If guidance
continues to trend in this direction, a wind advisory will likely
be needed during all or part of this time period. Fire weather
concerns may be elevated, but with ample moisture advection,
minimum RH values should only dip into the lower 50s, maybe upper
40 percent range. Paired with fuels greening up around the area,
fire weather concerns may be tempered, but still worth monitoring.

Overnight Thursday, with the broad warm sector positioned over the
region, guidance continues to lean toward scattered convection
overnight. With broadscale forcing for ascent present, the
possibility of scattered showers and storms across the region late
Thursday into early Friday cannot be ruled out. Most convection will
be elevated supported by the LLJ with some mixing of breezy winds to
the surface. Not anticipating severe storms at this time with the
early Friday morning activity but the risk of a damaging wind
gust or quarter hail with the strongest storms cannot be ruled out
completely, primarily across southeastern Kansas.

Through Friday, the deterministic 00Z GFS has maintained the
bullish trend of previous runs, with most GFS Ensemble members in
relative agreement. The NAM is also aggressive and the ECMWF
remains rather conservative in comparison, but has continues to
trend stronger. Overall, this is a quick, highly amplified system,
with the associated Pacific front surging quickly east of the
MO/KS border around midday. Current expectations is for convection
to fire along the front nearer the surface low center in Iowa by
mid afternoon, perhaps a bit earlier given the better supportive
environment nearer the warm front. Deep convection will develop
further south along the boundary by late afternoon likely east of
the KC Metro, think east of the US-65 Corridor into central
Missouri. Analyzing forecast soundings, an impressive amount of
deep layer shear will be at play, with the H850 jet over 50kts and
the 500mb jet easily topping 100 kts. 0-6km bulk shear is
forecast over 75kts across the region working with MLCAPE values
around 500 to 1200 J/kg. Given generally straight hodographs
across central Missouri, there's the potential for supercellular
structures to start, better chance in Iowa nearer the low, but
given the wind fields through the column, I would expect
convection to line out quickly and given mixing through the
boundary layer, straight line damaging winds will be the primary
concern as a squall line likely develops into the early evening
surging east by 7 PM. Lingering showers may exist overnight as
H500 short wave continues to churn east over Iowa, with mid-level
frontogenesis trailing the primary front. Additionally, strong
winds will likely linger in the wake of this system. Forecast
soundings suggest a 40 to 50kt H850 jet out of the northwest with
the potential for winds to mix to the surface.

After temperatures in the 70s Friday, cooler conditions will follow
Saturday, but this will be short lived as broad ridging aloft
supports a return to southerly flow on Sunday. Temperatures will
remain warm through early next week ahead of another deep H500
trough emerging into the Plains by mid-week. This system could bring
another chance of thunderstorms to the region Wednesday.

Gusty winds approaching 40-45 MPH are expected starting Thursday
afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are expected late Thursday night
into Friday morning. A second round of storms is expected Friday
afternoon and evening with a potential for some of those storms to be
strong to severe. There is higher confidence in severe storms east
of I-35. Damaging winds and large hail remain the primary concerns.
