instability to work with but embedded thunderstorms are still
possible especially late this afternoon and into early this
evening. Model soundings in conjunction with a strengthening low
level jet show the potential for wind gusts up to 60 MPH at the
surface with 50 to 55 knots at the top of the mixed layer in the
soundings.
After this storm system passes to the northeast, a second cold front
will move through the area on Wednesday morning resulting in
falling temperatures through the remainder of the period. Winds
will begin to decrease behind the second cold front as the
pressure gradient relaxes and high pressure briefly builds into
the area. Aloft, deep southwesterly from the southern Plains into
the northern Great Lakes is resulting in a period of shortwave
ridging and quiet weather.

Key Messages:
1. A strong storm system will bring winter weather to the area
Wednesday night into early Thursday evening. A winter storm watch
has been issued for parts of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois
from midnight Thursday to 6 PM Thursday.
2. Turning colder Thursday through Friday night. Temperatures will
moderate again Saturday through Monday.
3. There is another chance for precipitation late in the period.
Discussion:
Models have come into better agreement with a second storm system
although the operational NAM remains an outlier when compared with
other models.
Deep southwesterly flow aloft from the Desert Southwest
northeastward and into the Great Lakes region will result in a
trough lifting northeastward and impacting the region Wednesday
night into Thursday evening. This trough is positively tilted as
it moves across the Plains with a surface low tracking from
northeast Oklahoma into central Illinois and then northern
Indiana. The NAM remains east of the main track resulting in
heavier precipitation farther to the south. The heaviest snow is
forecast to fall along and north of a line from Fairfield to Iowa
City to Dubuque where 6 to 8 inches of snow is possible. Snowfall
amounts will quickly taper off to the northwest of this line. To
the southeast of that line, a mix of sleet and freezing rain to
start will change over to all snow from north to south with 1 to
2 inches of snow possible east of of a Macomb to Princeton
Illinois line. This snow will be drier than the previous snow with
liquid to snow ratios around 11:1. Strong northwest winds of 15
to 25 MPH with gusts up to 35 MPH will lead to blowing and
drifting snow. Precipitation is forecast to exit to the northeast
by 06 UTC on Friday.
The cold air on Friday will be shortlived as high pressure quickly
moves across the area and winds turn to the south later in the day
on Friday. In the wake of Thursday storm system, the flow aloft will
become zonal allowing for a warming trend through the weekend.
Models do show numerous weak shortwaves moving through the flow but
moisture is limited until a strong shortwave moves into the Plains
on Monday. This will bring showers and a change over to snow
Monday afternoon into Monday night. Colder air is once again
expected to move into the area behind this system.
