.DISCUSSION...

Ongoing mid level subsidence courtesy of negative vorticity
advection and mid level height rises will maintain dry conditions
across Se Mi today with sfc high pressure dominating the eastern
Great Lakes. A relatively cool low level airmass is in place which
combined with limited mixing depths this afternoon will support
highs generally in the lower 50s. After some peaks of sun early in
the day, mid and high level clouds will increase through the
afternoon and evening.

The increase in higher based clouds today will be in advance of a
fast moving low amplitude mid level short wave. This wave will move
across the northern Great Lakes on Monday. Left exit region jet
dynamics within a 130 knot jet streak will result in respectable
upper divergence across the northern Great Lakes, which will sustain
a rather compact sfc low traversing Upper Michigan. Increasing low
level SSW flow (925mb winds of 45-55 knots) will overspread Lower Mi
within the warm sector on Monday. This will drive 925mb temps into
the +9 to +12 C range across Se Mi. Forecast high temps and wind
gusts will be dependent on the efficiency of daytime mixing depths.
Given the plume of higher theta e air in the low to mid levels
capped by steep mid level lapse rates (700-500mb lapse rates near 7
C/km) daytime cloud cover and scattered to numerous showers should
limit the degree of mixing, likely under 2k feet. This would support
highs generally in the upper 50s to lower 60s with peak wind gusts
around 35 MPH. The steep mid level lapse rates will contribute to
some weak elevated instability, which would support a chance of a
thunderstorm.

Mid level dry air will overspread srn Mi Mon night, ending the
chances for showers. As the sfc low exits the region to the east, a
back door cold front will sink south across Lower Mi late Mon night
into Tuesday. The front is forecast to weaken considerably as mid
level ridging and sfc high pressure quickly expand across the region
late Tues into Tues night. This will however drive a little cooler
air back across Se Mi.

The next system is forecast to impact the region Wednesday into
Thursday. There is enough variation in the model suite and their
ensemble members to suggest that there will be adjustments in future
model runs with respect to wave amplitude/timing and the associated
sfc wave. The current forecast will carry a chance of rain Wed/Wed
night due to the potential for mid level warm air advection and
frontal forcing.

.MARINE...

An increase in the low level SSW wind fields will occur on Monday,
associated with a compact surface low forecast to move across Upper
Michigan. This wind field will drive a plume of warm air across Lake
Huron, which in turn will limit how efficiently the stronger winds
aloft mix down to the lake surface. The latest guidance suggests the
strength of the wind will be enough to support a window for high
probabilities of wind gusts to gale force. The expectation is for a
roughly two to three hour period of gale force gusts focused mainly
between 11 AM and 6 PM Monday, perhaps a few hours earlier on
Saginaw Bay.

The low will exit to the east of Upper Michigan Monday night,
allowing the winds to veer to the west. Although there will be an
increase in mixing depths Monday night as a little colder air
advances across the lake, the gradient will weaken as will the
strength of the low level wind fields. This will likely keep gusts
below gale force. The passage of the cold front across Lake Huron on
Tuesday will veer winds toward the north while wind speeds continue
to decrease. The approach of another low pressure system will result
in increasing easterly winds on Wednesday into Thursday.

AVIATION...

The decreasing cloud trend is ahead of schedule as of late evening
which is also accelerating fog development with borderline IFR/LIFR
visibility observations reported leading up to midnight. At this
point, the FNT to PTK area stands to experience greater fog coverage
and density for much of the late night through early morning as
surface high pressure settles overhead. Predictability is less
certain toward MBS where lower Td is nearby to the north and toward
DTW where lower VFR clouds could linger. Fog is then expected to
lift/dissipate as mid and high clouds increase during the morning.
These clouds continue to thicken and lower through the day as a
large low pressure system develops in the northern Plains states,
however ceiling remains above 5000 ft in a maturing warm sector
over the region by Sunday night.
