.A large storm system will produce hazardous winter travel
conditions from northern into central Iowa by Wednesday afternoon
and into Thursday. Potentially heavy snowfall is likely in far
northern Iowa with accumulations pushing 8 inches or more close
to the state border. Strong winds will further aggravate
difficult driving conditions by producing widespread blowing snow
and visibility reductions to near a quarter mile at times. Mixed
precipitation types are more of a concern to the south in central
Iowa with a variety of snow, freezing rain, and sleet all
possible. Ice accretions may approach a quarter inch over
portions of central Iowa should more freezing rain be realized.

Discussion:

Buckle up and hold onto your belongings, it is going to be an
eventful mid-week time frame.

But first, a northern stream shortwave and attendant surface low
pushed surface ridging eastward this morning and allowed for
southerly surface flow/WAA and weak mid-level thermal ridging to
return. Underneath mostly clear skies, this has allowed large areas
of the state to jump into the mid to upper 40s, with many on their
way to the low to mid 50s. Northern areas, where an established
snowpack remains, have and will continue to struggle to get much
more than the upper 30s to low 40s. This general warmth will mostly
be short lived though as aforementioned surface low will slide east
and drag a cold front across the state later this afternoon and
evening and effectively drop temperatures 10 degrees or so for
Tuesday.

Now the most impactful time frame remains the Tuesday through
Thursday time frame, which has been pretty remarkably consistently
advertised within the operational synoptic models and their
ensembles. Suffice it to say, heavy snowfall, accumulating wintry
mixes, strong winds, and a shot of cold will be seen.

To begin, a weak northern stream wave and building surface low off
the Colorado Front Range will begin to ramp up isentropic lift/theta-
e advection Tuesday afternoon and into the overnight, overriding a
mid level baroclinc zone. Synoptic guidance continues to hang onto
snowfall amounts down to around the Iowa-Minnesota border, while
incoming hi-res guidance is suggesting that accumulating snowfall
may remain 1 to 2 tiers of counties north of the border. Aside from
exact location, it does remain on track to provide headline snowfall
north of the CWA. Northern neighbors have hoisted or upgraded
headlines generally to advisory or warning levels in anticipation,
with greatest uncertainty on the southern edge. Here, should
synoptic solutions win out, mainly minor accumulations are expected
in/around areas such as Estherville and Mason City.

The main show enters central CONUS as a southern stream, SW CONUS,
wave begins to kick out and slide northeastward through the Plains.
Lee Cyclogenesis will see a surface low slide through NE Kansas, NW
Missouri, and through SE Iowa later Wednesday into Thursday. Ahead
of this low will be prolonged and impressive isentropic lift/theta-e
advection. As mentioned above, synoptic guidance has been remarkably
consistent in their depictions, and largely remain so. Northern
neighbors continue to message the potential for widespread 12" to
18"+ snowfalls during the Wednesday through Thursday time frame. For
them, it is a snowfall event. It is also mainly a snow event in our
north where heavy amounts remain of 6"+ across the northern two
tiers of counties and approaching 10" to 12" as you get to the
Minnesota border. It gets much trickier thermodynamically as you
work southward out of northern Iowa. While synoptic guidance is
broadly consistent, there are some differences in mid-level warm
nose and low-level cold air strength. This wreaks havoc on P-types.
Regardless of preferred model choice, there is confidence in
transition areas from snow to sleet to freezing rain to rain as you
work southward across the state. Found it hard to deviate from the
initial NBM guidance, which seemed to have a fair handle on the area
of P-type concern. It is possible to see near Warning criteria for
either sleet or freezing rain, but again is finicky given the
current differences in deterministic models and ensemble guidance.
At this point in time the forecast contains, snow mainly north of of
Highway 18, snow/sleet mixes Highway 18 to Highway 20,
snow/sleet/freezing rain Highway 20 to Highway 30, then freezing
rain and rain Highway 30 southward. Again, a mess. As if that is not
enough, there may be hints at convective elements within the mixed
precip areas, let alone snow areas, that could further complicate
the P-type forecast and accumulations. Generally, that could reduce
freezing rain potential and increase sleet amounts.

Both while this is largely ongoing and especially as the system
begins to depart, winds will be elevated. Initially E/NE winds in
the 15 to 25 kt range and gusts 30 to around 40 kts are expected as
pressure gradients tighten. On its own, this can be impactful, let
alone these winds will be concurrent with aforementioned mixed
precip. At that point, even moderate icing (0.10" or greater) could
yield impactful damages. So the combination of winds and mixed
precip will need to be watched. As the system departs Wednesday
night into Thursday morning and winds flip W/NW, dry air will
quickly shut down precipitation and winds will again pick up
significantly, with increasing likelihood of Wind Advisory level
winds for a few hours. That headline decision will be addressed in
subsequent shifts.

With neighbors currently wrestling the Tuesday system and headlines,
did not make changes to our current Winter Storm Watch for
Wednesday/Thursday, but southern watch additions may be
possible/needed ahead of subsequent headline upgrades.

Thursday night/Friday morning will be on the bitter side as lows
fall back below zero north and into the single digits for many
south, including windchills well below zero in some cases.
Temperatures do quickly rebound into the weekend though with
southern snow free areas back into the 40s and northern snow areas
more muted in the 20s/30s.

Another last round of patchy MVFR stratus may affect northern IA,
including KMCW, for the next several hours, but otherwise VFR
conditions are anticipated into the morning. Brief MVFR conditions
may return north Tue afternoon and early evening as light snow
brushes the IA/MN border. LLWS may also develop toward the end of
the period as low pressure begins maturing upstream.
