Areas of rain continue to stream into Iowa this afternoon aligned
with deep moisture transport. The larger precip shield is
expected to continue exiting to the north this evening however on
the nicely depicted back edge of kinematic forcing, with our
attention turning toward convective potential in the vicinity of
the upper low. Several hundred uncapped MLCAPEs currently over KS
will soon enter southwest IA in the coming hours as lapse rates
steepen near the low, with a concurrent uptick in 0-3km CAPE as
well. This along with low LCLs will continue to raise some tornadic
concerns even with what are very marginal temp and dewpoints no
better than 50F. Kinematically, the window where 0-1km hodograph
structure becomes more favorable and aligned with the pocket of
instability is not long, maybe several hours from 22z-02z where
shallow shear and streamwise ingest both increase. Thus the
tornado potential is still low overall due to instability
limitations, but in the non-zero bin with individual cells
requiring close examination for rapid changes in structure and
rotation. A few cells may have brief wall clouds and enhanced
structure with these low LCLs in the favorable 0-1km kinematic
window. Better organization may still struggle however with
limited instability keeping convection low top, reducing effective
shear versus what would be realized with deeper convection, and
even that is suspect with unfavorable hodographs going in no
particular direction above 3km at times. The precipitation should
end overnight with dry conditions and seasonal temperatures Wed,
but it will still be breezy into tomorrow.

Regarding the current Wind Advisory, the precipitation,
saturating columns, and vertical motion may limit wind potential
somewhat, and current guidance only suggests brief windows approaching
criteria this afternoon and again later tonight NW outside of the
advisory. The best potential may even be NW late. Confidence
isn’t great enough to cancel at this point however, with no
changes from neighbor offices, so will leave for later shifts to
evaluate.

By Wed night, our attention will turn toward snow and cooler
temperatures as the system currently moving through the Pacific NW
drops through the western trough into the central Plains.
Confidence is high that accumulating snow and possibly blowing
snow will affect travel Wed night into Thu, but there is still not
great agreement on the NW-SE placement of the heaviest snow band,
and amounts within that band. Much of the ensemble guidance
continues to highlight the most likely heaviest band just south
and east of Des Moines, while deterministic solutions, especially
the FV3 core GFS and HRWFV3 both bring the band just NW of Des
Moines with more bullish QPF and wind. Recent EC runs are
something in between. Timing is in better agreement however with
both mid and lower level forcing increasing sharply 06-12z
Thursday, aided by impressive theta-e advection and at least
moderate frontogenesis. This would especially target the Thursday
morning commute. Several models also suggest low static stability
with negative EPV above the frontogenetic forcing, and even token
MUCAPE noted, which are starting to be depicted as hi res
guidance and somewhat cellular simulated reflectivity come into
view on the SE flank of the system. Thundersnow is even in play.
This can certainly increase snow amounts, but also decrease areal
coverage so that can sometimes be problematic for the forecast in
a few ways.

So what does all this mean for the forecast? By continuing to
lean on the ensemble guidance placement, with a touch higher QPF
as all guidance continues to nudge upward, the current thinking is
still fairly aligned with the previous forecast and watch
placement but with a bit higher snow potential. Although there is
still uncertainty with wind as well, some of the guidance also
suggests blowing snow may increase impacts. Thus the current
Winter Storm Watch will remain in place with no changes at the
moment. Our late afternoon messaging push will depict abnormally
high ranges in snow amounts, with this due to the aforementioned
reduced confidence in placement and amounts. Hopefully confidence
increases sufficiently to lower these ranges in the coming model
cycles.

As the system departs, skies will clear into Thursday night with
winds becoming light as surface high pressure reaches IA. This
will allow for ideal radiational cooling over fresh snow with
early morning temps in at least the single digits Friday morning.
Would not be surprised to see zero or below in favored cooling
locations such as river valleys. Winds will be quite light
however, so wind chills impacts should be negligible. The weekend
looks dry and mild, but models are in decent agreement dropping a
short wave into the Rockies early next week establishing a central
CONUS mean trough, dropping temps back closer to normal, and
bringing chances for light snow.
