Key Messages:

- Convection lingering across the area today, a few strong to severe
storms possible in southeast Iowa this afternoon
- Rain transitions to snow on Sunday with highest accumulations north
- Gusty winds on Sunday, over 45 mph at times

Discussion:

The dominating ridge is no more. A trough across the north central
US is now the primary weather focal point for Iowa. Showers and
thunderstorms have spread across parts of the western half of Iowa
yesterday evening through this morning. By 2am the front was
across much of the area, visible in surface observations from
Wayne county and northeast through Poweshiek county in our CWA. It
is also nicely viewed in radar imagery with a few subtle embedded
waves in the ground clutter there. Showers and thunderstorm will
see a several hour break today between this initial round and a
secondary round of storms as the surface low lifts across
Missouri. By this afternoon expect to see re-strengthening across
parts of southeast Iowa. By this time the front will have shifted
east of the area, reducing chances for much severe in our area
with better instability to the south and east. Still, should any
stronger storms manage to develop this side of the front, small
hail and winds would be possible.

Meanwhile, behind the front strong cold air advection and a
tightening pressure gradient will result in steadily increasing
northwest winds into the area. By Saturday evening expect to see
gusts over 30 mph. Gusts will peak on Sunday, exceeding 45 mph at
times across much of the area. At the same time, rain will
transition to snow as temperatures tumble. Soundings generally along
and north of interstate 80 depict thermal profile supportive of snow
within the deformation zone of the surface low. Timing of this rain
to snow transition plus how much melting will occur with warm ground
temperatures results in some uncertainty with regard to
accumulation, but for now expect accumulations near an inch from the
interstate 80 to highway 30 corridor with pushing 3-5+ inches
towards the Iowa/Minnesota border.

Precipitation tapers off Sunday afternoon and evening with winds
diminishing into Monday. High pressure will keep the area dry the
first part of the week with temperatures gradually rebounding. By
late Tuesday into Wednesday another robust system will impact the
area. Thunderstorms look likely and based on the instability and
shear parameters at this lead time, severe storm could make a
return to Iowa as well.

.AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon/

This will be a fairly active TAF period for all sites. MVFR to IFR
ceilings span much of the state today, with KALO and KOTM on the
edge of this cloud deck and bouncing between VFR and MVFR.
Ceilings will remain MVFR to IFR through much of the period.

Showers and storms will move through the state this afternoon and
evening, with greatest thunderstorm chances south and east at
KDSM, KOTM, and KALO. Overnight, rain will begin to mix with or
transition to snow first across the north, then further south
through the morning hours. In addition, gusty winds will increase
through the night, likely exceeding 30 kts at all sites by
tomorrow morning. This combination of wind and snow may lead to
IFR and LIFR visibilities at times.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for much of central Iowa.

.DAY ONE...Today and tonight

Chances for thunderstorms linger into at least this evening. A few
may be strong with hail and gusty winds southeast.

Snow is expected across west central and northern Iowa from the
late evening into the overnight hours. A few inches of
accumulation on vegetation is possible. It will be windy as well
with northwest winds gusting 30 to 40 mph, which may reduce
visibilities during snowfall.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

The windy conditions will continue Sunday and Sunday evening with
gusts of 35 to 50 mph. A few more inches of snow may also fall
over the northern half of Iowa with the winds reducing
visibilities during snow. Travel may be hazardous at times north
due to snow covered roads early in the morning.

Thunderstorm chances are back in the forecast at times Tuesday
night into Thursday. The severe weather potential next week will
be better determined in the coming days.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotters may be needed briefly southeast into this evening. Reports
of any snow accumulations would be appreciated early Sunday as
well.
