Strong southwest winds will develop behind a dry line on Thursday. Given the deep dry-adiabatic lapse rates, higher winds at mid levels will likely mix to the surface along and west of the dry line, resulting in wind gusts from 50 to 60 mph. Areas of blowing dust are likely across all of central and southwest Kansas, but especially behind the dry line for places such as Garden City, Scott City and Liberal. Temperatures will warm into the 70s to lower 80s. The high wind watch for extreme southwestern Kansas has been upgraded to a warning. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 1233 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023 As the aforementioned upper level trough continues to move eastward and closes off on Friday, strong west to northwest winds are expected on the back side of the system across central and western Kansas, with gusts to 45 mph. High temperatures will cool into the 60s to lower 70s behind the associated front on Friday. A tranquil period is forecast for Saturday and Sunday, with much lighter winds as the high plains will be in the upper level ridge between two storm systems. Another intense shortwave trough will amplify across the plains by late Monday into Tuesday, with a very deep surface low over the central high plains. This has the potential to be a major high wind and blowing dust event for central and southwestern Kansas ahead of the front with the southwest winds, and behind the front with northwest winds. The timing of the system is still a little uncertain; but strong winds seem very likely. As long as these progressive and strong upper level systems continue to pass to the north of Kansas, we will continue to experience the southwesterly dry intrusion across the high plains, with little in the way of precipitation this far west. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night) Issued at 1111 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023 A 50 kt LLJ will continue through the overnight period. As a result, LLWS is likely across the terminals through early morning. Eventually, strong winds aloft and mechanical mixing will result in very strong sfc winds across the terminals. S to SW winds will blow around 30-35 kt with gusts over 40 kt. These strong winds will likely result in BLDU with reduced vis, sometimes very low vis, across the terminals.
