.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)

A significant mid-latitude cyclone continued to pull away from the
central CONUS, and western Kansas remained in the dry subsidence
region behind this storm with broad north-to-south surface high
pressure ridging across much of the Central Plains.

A weak, broad mid-upper tropospheric ridge will move out across the
High Plains today with the upper flow pattern becoming more west-
southwesterly across the Rockies through the day. This will favor
increased lee trough development across the length of the High
Plains. This pattern shift will result in increased surface pressure
gradient. This pressure gradient, however, will shift east through
the day, along with resulting 15 to 25 mph south-southwest winds.
The strongest winds across southwest Kansas will be in the 15 to 19Z
time frame today with a gradual decrease in wind through the
afternoon as the leeside trough axis broadens and expands east
across western Kansas.

A nebulous boundary layer wind convergence axis will set up across
the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, and this region will be a little
closer to a southern branch jet core. Despite horrible low level
moisture, very steep lapse rates through the lower and mid
troposphere will result in isolated to widely scattered showers and
perhaps a weak thunderstorm or two -- just to the south of our
southwest Kansas region. We will keep POPs below the mentionable 15
percent threshold given the deficient low level moisture.

Monday Night into early Tuesday, a storm system out west will
approach the Rockies, and the southwest flow aloft will overspread
the Central Rockies. This will lead to even further leeside trough
development across eastern Colorado, in particular. The sustained
south winds across much of southwest and portions of west central KS
Monday Night will lead to much warmer low temperatures in the mid
40s to lower 50s. Farther north, closer to a weak surface front,
lows will dip into the upper 30s to around 40 (Syracuse to Scott
City to Wakeeney, in particular).

Tuesday, the next storm system will continue its approach, and a
broad, deep surface low will continue to form out of the leeside
trough. Winds will continue to increase out of the southwest on the
High Plains and south or south-southeast farther east. A dryline
will develop with lower to mid 50s dewpoints advancing northward
into south central Kansas by late afternoon. Convergence along the
dryline will increase in the late afternoon to early evening, and
the convergence may be just enough to foster isolated to widely
scattered thunderstorm development. Surface temperatures topping out
88 to 91F along the Oklahoma border should be enough to overcome any
capping inversion, but the stout elevated mixed layer just east of
the dryline will prevent coverage, intensity, and duration of
thunderstorm activity. Nevertheless, we will be introducing some 15
POPs mainly across the southeastern counties. These small POPs may
need to be adjusted depending on where the dryline ultimately sets
up. The dryline may very well be farther west than currently
forecast.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday)

The mid-April heat will not last. Wednesday will be the last warm
day for awhile. In fact, the turn to cold later in the week and
weekend will lead to more freezing temperatures -- which is the
greatest forecast challenge and concern. We are getting far enough
along into April now that temperatures in the mid to upper 20s will
raise some eyebrows and cause some impacts to gardeners. Saturday
and Sunday morning, in particular, both look to be very cold. The
deterministic GFS, Canadian GDPS, and ECMWF all show a formidable
cold upper level trough axis centered right across the
Central/Northern Plains. These models all agree, to some degree, on
a cold upper level low center down to about 535 to 540dam at 500mb
with a very expansive region of cold lower tropospheric temperatures
as well. All three deterministic models show a huge area of -5 to -
10C 850mb temperatures poised to push south behind a cold front.

The deterministic GFS and Canadian GDPS show a fairly substantial
precipitation event Friday, as both those models show a disturbance
rotating around the southwest periphery of the larger scale trough,
leading to enhanced lift poleward of the front into the cold air.
These two models are counter to the ECMWF. The GEFS QPF plumes for
Friday show that the control/deterministic run of the GFS is a
rather significant outlier -- at least on this run. The much drier
deterministic ECMWF is on par with it's EPS members, leading to even
more confidence that the 17/00Z  runs of the GFS and GDPS
appear to be rogue runs. We will see if things change in subsequent
model runs as we get closer to Friday.

Now, back to the temperatures. There is pretty solid ensemble
support for the very cold morning temperatures Saturday and Sunday.
The ECMWF and EPS members/mean tend to have a warm Minimum
Temperature bias, but even with that said, the EPS has numerous
members with lows both Saturday and Sunday morning well into the
lower 30s (for DDC). The GEFS members/mean are colder, as expected,
with a mean low of 32 on Saturday and 33 on Sunday. This is the mean
of 30 members, so there are numerous members below, if not even well
below 32/33. In fact, some of the members are well into the mid 20s
for lows Sunday morning at DDC. There is a noticeable trend in
colder mean lows for Saturday and Sunday morning when looking at the
multiple-run trend chart of the GEFS going back the last 8 runs or
so.

Bottom line: we need to start considering Saturday and/or Sunday
morning lows being potentially 5 or more degrees below freezing
across a fairly large portion of southwest Kansas. 27F is currently
the 10th percentile Minimum Temperature forecast from the NBM for
Dodge City (25F for Garden City and Hays), and if these cold trends
continue, we will see more and more members at these temperature
levels and subsequent deterministic official low forecast will lower
in future updates. On this morning's forecast update, we are going
with 30F and 29F on Saturday and Sunday morning at Dodge City.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night)

The aviation weather conditions will continue to be very good
through this new TAF period with widespread VFR flight category
forecast. Light and variable winds at the onset of this period
will continue through daybreak, but winds will pick up out of the
south to southwest, peaking in strength 17 to 20 knots sustained
for about a 3 or 4 hour period during the late morning through
midday time frame. By afternoon, wind speeds will gradually
decrease to the 11 to 14 knot range, further decreasing to light
and variable again at around sunset.

Elevated fire weather conditions are likely this afternoon and
early evening across portions of west central and southwest Kansas
as winds will remain fairly strong from the northwest and relative
humidity falling to 18 to 25 percent.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Critical fire weather conditions appear likely on Tuesday
afternoon through evening as strong southwest winds will develop
west of a dryline. Extremely low relative humidity can be expected
across far southwest and west central Kansas on Tuesday afternoon.
