.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Rain has moved out of the Nebraska panhandle early this morning,
leaving behind some lingering cloud cover. Places across the
panhandle picked up some decent rainfall, with Sidney even setting a
daily rainfall record yesterday of 0.19 inches, breaking the old
record of 0.l2 inches set back in 1966. Snow has also tapered off
across the mountains which has led to the early cancellation of the
Winter Weather Advisory in the Sierra Madres this morning.
The remainder of the day should be fairly dry. Perhaps some
lingering snow showers across the mountains, but not expecting any
further accumulations. Clearing skies are even likely for portions
of the plains this afternoon. The only real weather concern is the
marginal threat of high winds this morning across the Arlington and
south Laramie Range wind prones. Models show 55 kt winds at 700 mb
with decent gradients and subsidence. The Arlington zone already
gusted in the upper 50s earlier this morning which prompted the
issuance of a Special Weather Statement for wind gusts of 55 to 60
MPH. The Arlington zone continues to gust in the 50s, and the south
Laramie Range wind gusts are steadily creeping up this morning,
which also earned them a Special Weather Statement. Expect winds to
ease during the late morning hours. Will have to keep an eye on the
winds. If they get any stronger, a short-fuse High Wind Warning may
be needed.
Weather during the day Tuesday should stay fairly benign with
increasing clouds and a chance of snow showers in the mountains and
west of the Laramie Range ahead of the next storm system. By Tuesday
afternoon, leeside cyclogenesis starts to form a surface low by the
Colorado/New Mexico border. Over the past 24 hours, models have
begun to trend this surface low ever so slightly to the north. As a
result, the highest QPF amounts have been shifted north into
northeast Colorado, just south of the Wyoming and Nebraska panhandle
borders, as per the GFS and NAM. The ECMWF has the highest QPF
amounts across the far southeastern parts of the CWA and is the most
aggressive solution for the CWA with the highest snowfall amounts.
Trended snowfall totals closer to GFS and NBM as a majority of the
deterministic models match these two solutions. At this point, it
looks like Laramie County in Wyoming, and the southern Nebraska
panhandle will see the biggest impacts and highest snow totals from
this storm. These areas could see between 4 and 8 inches of snow,
with a majority of it falling between late Tuesday night and
Wednesday morning. Decided to issue Winter Storm Watches for east
Laramie County in Wyoming, and Kimball, Banner, Morrill, and
Cheyenne Counties in Nebraska as there is higher confidence in these
locations seeing at least 4 inches of snow. However, there is still
uncertainty with regards to the track and position of the surface
low. Any further jog north could result in higher snowfall
accumulations for said counties, and lead to more widespread
accumulating snow across the northern Nebraska panhandle and
southeast Wyoming. Hopefully in the coming forecast packages, we can
gain more confidence the storm system's track.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Medium to Long Range models in pretty good agreement through next
week with mainly minor weather systems impacting the area. The
Pacific system, which will likely produce accumulating snowfall
across most of southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska on
Wednesday, will exit the region by Wednesday night with only some
lingering light snow or flurries for the Alliance, Scottsbluff,
and Sidney areas. Models tend to be too fast with these
intensifying systems as they exit Colorado, so will keep low-end
chance POP for portions of the panhandle for now. Would not be
surprised if models trended slower in the next few days.
In-house wind models do show an increase in near surface and low
level pressure gradients across southeast Wyoming Wednesday night
behind the departing system, so increase winds a bit for the Wind
Prone areas with gusts 50-55 MPH possible. Another High Wind event
is possible for these areas into Thursday morning, but confidence
is low at this time mainly due to timing concerns with the exiting
storm system.
00Z Deterministic models and ensembles all show a chilly pattern
later in the week and into the weekend as the main jet stream
dives south towards the Mexico border. High temperatures will
struggle to reach 25 to 30 degrees across southeast Wyoming with
maybe some low to mid 30s for western Nebraska. Overnight lows
will generally range from the single digits to low teens with a
few locations dropping below zero, especially those with a decent
snow pack from Wednesday's system. Models indicate another storm
system pushing into the northern and central Pacific coastline
Thursday, but models are trending south with the bulk of the upper
level energy as the jet dives southward Thursday night and
Friday. Continued to trend POP lower during this period with the
best chance for snow across the mountains.
As we head into Sunday, models show yet another Pacific system
impacting the Pac NW coastline and Montana. Models are in decent
agreement for 170 hours out, so kept POP between 20 to 40 percent
across the area for some light snowfall. Models and ensemble are
hinting at some modified arctic air pushing south out of Canada as
this weather system moves southeast across the area, so continued
to trend temperatures colder late this weekend.

VFR expected for SE WY terminals through this evening. KRWL will
see decreasing CIGs between 6Z-12Z, resulting in a transition from
VFR to MVFR. Maximum wind gusts between 18Z-0Z today will be 25-30
kts for SE WY terminals.
NE Panhandle terminals will remain VFR between 18Z and 6Z for KSNY
and KBFF. KAIA and KCDR will be more difficult to pin down
regarding VIS and CIGs. KCDR will be in IFR/MVFR due to low CIGs.
High confidence exists for CIG reductions to briefly improve for
KCDR and KAIA before transition back to lower thresholds. Have
introduced IFR/LIFR CIGs for these terminals respectively. Wind
gusts at KSNY will be elevated at 20-30 kts through 22Z, then
reduce to 15 kts or below in alignment with the remaining
terminals.
