Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday night)

The main focus of the short term forecast remains the ongoing snow
event and arctic cold.

Currently, the advertised lull in between the two parts of this snow
event is coming to an end. Flow aloft is largely zonal, with a few
weak vort-maxes traversing west to east across the area, indicated
by some high cloud cover passing through. The main synoptic players
are a strong upper level low diving nearly due south into California
along the west coast, and another shortwave over Montana holding the
cold air in place. Surface analysis shows the arctic front smashed
right up against the mountains as a surface high slowly slides down
the Rocky mountain front range. Almost the entire area is now firmly
in the arctic air, with the exception of the mountains. The warmest
temperatures in the CWA right now are in the higher elevations of
the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges, where the arctic air is too
shallow to reach at this time. The mid-level front is now located
across the northern CWA, with 700-mb winds starting to gain a
southerly component per SPC mesoanalysis. This is helping to produce
some weak isentropic lift/warm air advection aloft, overrunning the
cold arctic air at the surface. After drier air briefly moved in
last evening, more mid-level moisture is pushing in now, which is
resulting in the radar filling in once again as the lift
interacts with the better moisture. Most locations around the area
are now reporting light snow once again.

The main player for the rest of the day will be the mid-level front
sagging southward, and bringing the focus of the best snowfall rates
southward with it. Guidance shows significant frontogenesis at 700-
mb moving southward as the day progresses. Low-level winds remain
easterly upslope, though winds along I-80 east of Laramie have
gained more of a southerly component as well. Expect light to
moderate snowfall to continue through much of the day today, but the
very cold temperatures and resultant fairly dry column overhead will
limit snow totals. Some banded snowfall could develop later on today
and produce locally heavier snowfall, which will have to be
monitored as the day progresses. With this round, we are generally
expecting another 2 to 5 inches for the lower elevations, though a
few areas will need to be watched for potentially higher amounts.
These include the Saratoga area and southern Platte county where
additional snow around 6 inches could be possible. Most of the area
is already very well covered with the current winter weather
highlights, so opted not to make any changes with this forecast
update. A few areas, especially further north may not see advisory
level impacts with this second round of snowfall, but didn't feel
comfortable cancelling an advisory before this round even begins.
Later shifts may be able to let the advisories go early along and
north of the Pine Ridge as the end to snow will push from north to
south later today. The only counties without a current headline are
Kimball and Cheyenne counties in the southern panhandle, but new
snow amounts suggest that totals in the 1 to 3 inch range are
likely, so held off on anything there. Considered upgrading the
Saratoga valley to a Winter Storm Warning also considering that
snow has already fallen and another 4 to 8 inches is expected to
come with this round, but held off due to lack of observations
from the area of what impacts have already occurred. Overall, the
forecast for round two looks to be on track.

The other concern is the cold temperatures dominating the area. The
front came in a little colder than most guidance, so nudged the
forecast towards the NBM 10th percentile and MOS guidance for today
and tonight. If we remain on the colder end of guidance through
early Monday, some areas could see wind chills fall below -30F and
thus need a Wind Chill Warning. It looks fairly marginal for -30F at
this time, but the possibility is there especially further north.
Opted to issue a Wind Chill Watch for areas with the highest
confidence in seeing dangerous wind chills. This includes Converse
and Niobrara counties, as well as the Laramie Valley. Confidence is
slightly lower for the Laramie area, as reaching -30F will be
contingent on the reverse-gap flow setting up again late tonight as
it did late last evening through early this morning. This results
from the strong reversed MSLP gradient across the gap in the south
Laramie range, and an increased push of higher pressure into
northern Colorado can initiate this flow. Models struggled to pick
it up this morning, so increased the winds in the same spot for
tonight, but if this doesn't materialize, Laramie is not likely to
be cold enough to reach Warning criteria. Wind Chill advisories
appear likely for most of the rest of the CWA, with the exception of
perhaps the lower elevations near the North Platte River valley.
However, with the current Winter Weather Advisories already covering
through 18z Monday, decided to message the cold wind chills within
the winter weather product rather than add a second product on top
of it. If any winter weather advisories are cancelled early, they
may need to be replaced with a Wind Chill Advisory for tonight.

The stalled frontal boundary will finally depart on Monday as the
last shortwave rotates through. Much drier air in the 700-mb to 300-
mb layer will progress southward through the day on Monday, allowing
clouds to finally clear out. Mostly clear skies are expected Monday
night, which should allow for another frigid night across the area.
Westerly winds will start to increase in some areas, which may help
to moderate temperatures along and immediately east of the Laramie
range. Other areas, particularly west of the Laramie range and in
the lower valleys, are likely to plummet, so another round of Wind
Chill headlines might be possible for Tuesday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Saturday)

Overview: The majority of the long term forecast remains on track
from the previous forecast update. The main adjustments made within
this forecast package was the potential high wind threat Tuesday into
Wednesday. A new updated discussion (see below) will address the
changes made to this part of the long term forecast. Beyond
Wednesday the long term forecast remains on track

(Tuesday through Wednesday Wind Threat): The main hazard in the long
term forecast will be for the return of high winds across the wind
prone areas and potentially across the I-80 summit. Additionally, if
these winds do develop, blowing and drifting snow could become an
issue along portions of I-80. The main driver of this wind event
will be a fast moving shortwave that will move through the mean NW
500mb flow. 700mb winds increase to 50 knots late Tuesday night as
pressure gradients tighten across along the Laramie Range. At the
time of peak 700mb wind intensity, the CAG-CPR 850 and 700mb
gradients are at their most intense at 70/54 meters respectively.
The limiting factor may be the magnitude of the downward omega
fields. This is representative in in-house model guidance. In-house
guidance shows increase probabilities for high winds but predicted
wind max wind gusts are just at high wind criteria for Arlington and
below high wind criteria for Bordeaux and the I-80 summit. The best
chance for high winds to occur will be in the Arlington wind prone
late Tuesday night with Bordeaux occurring by early Wednesday
morning. As the shortwave passes to the by the 700mb winds increase
along the I-80 summit Wednesday morning which could prompt a 6hr
window for high wind potential across this area. Where these high
winds develop, blowing snow will be an issue as recent snow will sit
on top of old snowpack and be more easily blowable. Outside of the
wind concern areas, much of the region will see an overall quiet
weather day with continued cold temperatures.

(Thursday through next Sunday): Previous long term forecast
discussion remains valid through this timeframe as minimal changes
were made regarding the overall weather message. See previous
discussion below for details

Previous Discussion: The upper level ridge axis will shift from the
desert SW toward the Intermountain West on Thursday and Friday. This
will lead to continued increases in daytime highs as WAA brings
700mb temperatures in the 0C to -6C thresholds. Daytime highs in the
upper 20s to lower 40s can be expected for both of these days.
Internal probabilistic guidance is trending with slightly higher
winds across the higher terrain and gap regions late Thursday into
Friday night. We will continue to monitor trends in the event that
wind headlines become prudent. For the weekend, the possibility of
strong winds and warmer temperatures near seasonal averages are
favored. Additionally, a weak shortwave disturbance may bring
another round of accumulating mountain snow showers by Saturday.
Overall, expect a gradual trend of improving weather conditions with
respect to temperatures, and the possibility of Wyoming winds to
remain present for the extended forecast.

Another tricky aviation forecast for the next 18-24 hours as
lingering low CIGs and VIS occur due to -SHSN moving through the
region. IFR/LIFR is most likely for SE WY through Monday morning,
with minor fluctuations of MVFR. Low-end VFR is then expected by
approximately 18Z Monday. IFR/MVFR is likely for the NE Panhandle
terminals, with fluctuations to low-end VFR through Monday
morning. Expect a gradual transition to VFR for the NE Panhandle
terminals after 18Z from north to south on Monday. There is a
possibility of MIFG at the NE Panhandle terminals between 0Z and
12Z due to VRB winds overnight.

widespread snowfall and well below average temperatures
anticipated. Light to moderate snowfall will redevelop today
across the area, and depart from north to south Monday morning.

front. The coldest temperatures are expected tonight through
Monday morning. Wind chills between 20 and 30 degrees below zero
will be possible for much of the area, and a few areas could see
wind chills as low as 35 degrees below zero. The arctic cold is
expected to relent somewhat on Tuesday, with temperatures
returning to near average by the end of the work week.
