.SHORT TERM...(Tonight - Wednesday Night)

High winds remain the primary forecast concern over the next 24-36
hours. We know, you are just as shocked as we are! It has been yet
another windy day across southeast Wyoming with numerous gusts 35-
45 MPH being observed over the past several hours. There have been
a few rogue gusts around 55-58 MPH near Arlington and Elk Mountain
earlier today, in response to low-level CAG to CPR gradients still
in the 50s to near 60 meters. High Wind Warnings for Arlington and
Bordeaux were allowed to expire at 8 AM this morning w/ most WYDOT
sites reporting gusts under 50 MPH since expiration. Arlington may
continue to gust 45-55 MPH through the night as the 850 mb CAG-CPR
gradient remains in the 60s, although a weakening gradient at 700-
mb suggests the threat for 60+ MPH gusts will slowly decline. This
behavior is also suggested by our in-house models for both ARL and
BRX. On Wednesday, lee cyclogenesis over the northern Rockies will
promote continuous pressure falls across eastern Montana, into the
western Dakotas. As such, low-level height gradients remain strong
through the day on Wednesday. A more dramatic increase in both 700
and 850-mb CAG-CPR gradients will occur Wednesday night into early
Thursday morning with values climbing to 70+ meters at 850-mb. Lee
cyclogenesis along the Laramie Range will eventually contribute to
a strengthening west-east oriented MSLP gradient across the range,
with a sharp omega couplet suggesting an increase in mountain wave
activity late in the forecast period. 700-800 millibar flow should
not be particularly strong (yet) through midnight Wednesday night,
but high wind (60+ MPH gust) potential will be on the rise heading
toward sunrise Thursday.
No other impactful weather expected this period. Broad/flat upper-
level ridging will support a trend toward warmer and drier weather
with progged 700-mb temperatures +6 to +8 deg C suggesting daytime
highs in the lower to middle 60s F on Wednesday.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday - Tuesday)

After our brief midweek warmup, a colder and windy weather pattern
is expected to return into the weekend.
The ridge responsible for Wednesday's warmth will shift eastward on
Thursday as a strong trough plows into the Pacific northwest. The
initial shortwave on the leading edge of the trough arrives early
Thursday, and elevates the 700-mb height gradients behind it. Low
level cross-barrier pressure gradients will already be elevated
Wednesday night, so the other piece coming together increases
confidence in high winds into Thursday morning. Most guidance shows
robust 700-mb winds spreading over a good chunk of the area through
the day on Friday with also a strong subsidence signal showing up.
This is definitely looking solid for the wind prone areas, and there
is potential to be quite a bit more widespread across much of
southeast Wyoming. High winds are even possible in the Nebraska
panhandle with this event. For now, let the High Wind Watch continue
for just the wind prone areas since there is still plenty of time to
evaluate the exact location of the strong winds over the plains.
There is some model disparity in whether the strong winds will be
more focused over northern or southern portions of the area,
depending on just how far south the shortwave tracks. Confidence is
high in a windy day over the High Plains Thursday, but not quite
there for widespread areas exceeding 50 knots yet. Decent moisture
in the 500 to 700-mb layer with strong westerly flow will also mean
a return of mountain snow showers Thursday, but deep moisture looks
fairly limited. Temperatures on Thursday will be cooler than
Wednesday, but still above normal. 700-mb temperatures drop back
below zero by late Thursday as cold air pushes in behind the initial
shortwave.
A second shortwave in the broad trough slides south of our area on
Friday. Strong cold air advection will continue steady through
Thursday night and Friday. The upper level low is expected to swing
across Colorado with a frontal boundary draped to the northeast.
Southerly flow ahead of the shortwave trough axis will produce some
modest overrunning warm air advection over the stalled frontal
boundary. This is expected to spread snow eastward over the plains
overtop NNE surface flow. The upslope component isn't excellent and
the best synoptic forcing will be to our south. However, most
guidance stretches the isentropic lift and frontogenesis just far
enough north to bring precipitation to the I-80 corridor. This is
not expected to be a significant widespread snow event, but still
could cause some minor impacts. The most likely scenario at this
time is a general 1-3" accumulation over the I-80 corridor from the
summit eastward, with a Trace to an inch or so stretching up to
roughly the North Platte River valley. The lower end scenario is
little to nothing for most of the forecast area outside of the
mountains. The upper end scenario would likely warrant end up as a
high end winter weather advisory for the southern part of the
forecast area. The plains should see snow end sometime Friday
evening at the latest, though snow showers may continue in the
higher terrain and areas west of the Laramie range into early
Saturday as a vorticity maximum on the backside of the broader
trough swings through.
A strong jet aloft moves in over the area by Saturday evening behind
this trough with northwest flow. Like clockwork, height and pressure
gradients increase once again across the area. Thus, another round
of strong winds is possible Saturday night and Sunday, though
uncertainty is a bit higher at this lead time. This would be a
fairly cool bora-type event, as most guidance keeps our area on the
cold side of the temperature gradient.
