A upper level ridge axis extended from central MT to southern UT.
A stationary surface front was positioned along the Front Range.
Light southeasterly upslope flow east of the boundary produced
very light snow showers or flurries east of I-25 in southeast WY
and south of the Platte River in the southern NE Panhandle. Only
trace amounts are expected overnight. Otherwise, skies were overcast
across much of the high plains with ceilings below 7000 feet.
The short term forecast will focus on strong winds for portions of
Wyoming, snowfall accumulations for the higher elevations, and
temperatures.
The upper level ridge will slide east across the northern/central
Rockies and Plains through Tuesday. A shortwave disturbance over
ID moves across MT and northern WY this afternoon and the Dakotas
tonight. This disturbance will steepen the low level gradient east
of the Laramie Range this afternoon and tonight. 700mb westerly
winds increase to 50 kt along and west of the Laramie Range with
the 850mb CAG-BRX gradient rising to 60 meters at 09Z Tuesday. In-
house random forest high wind guidance progs elevated to brief high
wind criteria at Bordeaux overnight tonight through late Tuesday
afternoon and a High Wind Watch is in effect for WY Zone 106.
A stronger southwest flow develops Tuesday night and Wednesday well
downstream from a amplifying upper level trough moving into the
Pacific Coast states. A belt of stronger 700mb winds from the
southwest spread northeast across northern and western Carbon County
into Converse County and northern Albany County Tuesday night and
Wednesday. The 06Z NAM progs 60-70 kt 700mb flow from the North
Snowy Range Foothills across the North Laramie Range. Issued a High
Wind Watch for WY Zone 110 (Arlington) from 06Z Tuesday through 21Z
Wednesday, and WY Zones 101 (Douglas) and 104 (Ferris/Seminoe/Shirley
mountains) from 21Z Tuesday through 21Z Wednesday.
A strong cold front will be moving east across central WY Wednesday
afternoon, and southeast WY and western NE Panhandle Wednesday night.
Snow showers will develop over western Carbon County by Wednesday
morning, becoming more numerous over the higher terrain before
spreading into Albany County later in the afternoon. Accumulations
of 3 to 5 inches are predicted for the Snowies and Sierra Madres
above 9000 feet.
It will be milder this afternoon as 700mb temperatures rebound to
-4C to -6C.
Expect highs from the mid 30s to lower 50s. Overnight lows will
range from the mid 20s to mid 30s. The surface boundary draped
along the Laramie Range will retreat east as a warm front Tuesday.
Downslope flow and 700mb temperatures 0C to 2C will push the
mercury into the mid 50s to mid 60s east of the Laramie Range.
Similar high temperatures are forecast Wednesday. Adjusted max
temperatures both days by applying the NBM 25th percentile. Lows
Tuesday night will be in the 30s to around 40.

Main forecast challenges for the long term period include timing of
a cold frontal passage Wednesday night and early Thursday morning,
expected snowfall through Thursday afternoon, and the potential for
strong northwest winds east of I-25 Friday and Saturday.
The midweek warmth across southeast WY and western NE will be short-
lived as a cold frontal passage from the north Wednesday night will
drop temperatures across the region for the remainder of the week
and potentially remaining through the weekend. Guidance continues to
hint at the timing of the frontal passage Wednesday night. ECMWF EPS
members show the frontal passage through the CWA by 12z Thursday with
the most likely passage occurring around 06-09z. GEFS members are
also in good agreement with both surface and 700mb temps dropping
during the overnight period. Strong north/northwest winds are also
expected immediately behind the front with strong subsidence and a
notable pressure gradient, especially along the southern NE Panhandle.
As far as precipitation goes with this system, it still looks
disorganized with split energy between a vort max focused across
central CO and another farther north swinging through central WY.
The Snowys and Sierra Madres will continue to see favorable southwest
upslope flow before the frontal passage when the focus will shift
towards north/northwest facing slopes. Front forcing with low level
convergence will support precip across east-central WY and the
northern NE Panhandle Wednesday night, but will most likely start
off as rain before the colder air arrives. However, best large scale
forcing for this system looks to be placed near the CO/KS/NE border
and points farther northeast throughout Thursday. Lingering snowfall
Thursday will be due to the passage of the secondary vort max with
weaker PVA, before conditions begin to clear up and colder weather
settles in. Overall, looking a minimal impacts across lower elevations
with up to an inch of snow accumulation east of I-25 and around 2
inches possible farther west across Carbon and Albany Co. Mountains
could see up to a foot of new accumulation so may need to consider
winter headlines with upcoming forecast updates. Two areas to keep
a watch on for changes to the current forecast will be Sidney and
Laramie. Any sort of westward shift in areas of favorable lift with
this system could see southeastern portions of the CWA seeing higher
snowfall totals, however current NBM probability of 4" of accumulation
is only 10%. As for Laramie, northwest winds behind the frontal
passage could lead to more favorable upslope direction and higher
snowfall totals for eastern portions of the Laramie Valley, including
the city of Laramie.
GEFS 700mb temp median value drops off towards -15C by Thursday night
which is a slightly colder trend from previous runs. This will drop
temperatures below normal for mid-March with Friday morning lows
in the teens along and east of I-25 and potentially colder dropping
into the single digits farther west towards Laramie and Rawlins.
With the GEFS and ECMWF EPS members in fairly good agreement that
the upper level low will stall out over the northern Great Plains,
looks like colder air will stick around a few days with a slow and
steady warmup through the weekend to near -5C at 700mb. This would
keep afternoon high Saturday mostly in the upper 20s and 30s before
climbing into the 40s east of the Laramie Range Sunday and Monday.
Additionally, with the stalled upper level system, strong northwest
winds over eastern portions of the CWA will be possible Thursday
and Friday, potentially continuing into Saturday.

week. Disturbances will track east across Montana and Wyoming this
afternoon through Wednesday. These disturbances will steepen the low

Periods of strong winds will develop tonight and continue through
Wednesday for portions of east-central, south-central and southeast
Wyoming. Temperatures will warm above normal early this week with
minimum humidities lowering from 30 to 40 percent today to 20 to 30
percent Tuesday and Wednesday east of the Laramie Range. A strong
cold front moves through the region Wednesday night, accompanied by
widespread snow showers and much colder temperatures. Several inches
of snow is expected for elevations above 9000 feet.
