Forecast challenges continue to dwell around strong winds in the
wind prone areas of southeast Wyoming through the short term
period.

Currently...Stalled out frontal boundary lays along the
Colorado/Kansas stateline...north to western Nebraska...into
northeast WYoming this morning. 1044mb surface high lays across
northwestern Colorado...with a fairly strong pressure gradient
between these two features in southeast Wyoming. 09Z SLPRES
gradients between Craig and Casper stands at 18.5mbs. Craig to
Casper 850/700mb height gradients at 09Z stand at 72/45mtrs
respectively. Random Forest guidance peaking out high wind
probabilities at 12Z this morning. Surface observations at
Arlington and Bordeaux are just below warning guidance so far.
Have managed to get a few reports of sustained 40mph to verify
Arlington and Bordeaux zones. Emkay UPR site in foothills is
really close to hitting. So for now...will keep the High Wind
Warning going.

Upper ridge axis moves across the CWA this afternoon for a
decrease in winds as this takes place. Looks like about a 9-10
hour lull in winds this afternoon before gradients begin to
increase once again after 06Z tonight. Decided to issue a High
Wind Watch for the wind prone areas for tonight through Saturday
night to account for the lull and eventual increase in gradients
once again.

Upper shortwave trough moves through to our north early Saturday
morning with falling 700mb temperatures behind the system.
Guidance not showing any associated precip with this trough
passage through Sunday. Only slightly stronger winds. Do see
55-60kts from GFS 700 through 800mb winds. May still be a chance
for strong winds to spill out into eastern Platte and central
Laramie Counties. Later shifts will need to make a call on these
two zones as we get closer to the event.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

No major changes to the forecast with this update. The extended
forecast looks fairly benign compared to the last several weeks with
concerns focusing on marginal high winds for the wind prone areas,
and a few week systems that will bring temporarily colder air and
shots for light snow.

After a small, transient ridge passes through on Sunday, attention
turns to the next trough. This system will come onshore this weekend
and move eastward fairly quickly. Models depict it eventually
splitting, with the northern parent trough ejecting off to the east
quickly, but leaving a southern upper level low trailing behind. The
trough axis and surface cold front are expected to pass through
sometime Monday morning. Ahead of the trough axis, southwesterly
flow will be in place which is likely lead to breezy to windy
conditions in Carbon county and the northern Laramie range. Surface
winds will turn more northwesterly and spread south and east as the
trough gets closer, and then spill out across the high plains behind
the front early Monday. Expect cold air advection and chilly
northwest winds during the day Monday. This won't be a significant
cold snap, but we are likely to cut perhaps 5-10F off of Sunday's
highs for Monday. There is not a strong signal for high winds Sunday
night and Monday morning yet with mediocre gradients in place. The
GFS shows elevated 700-mb winds though with decent subsidence, so
will need to watch this period for marginal high winds in the wind
prone areas.

Snowfall also looks fairly modest with the Monday event. The system
will be fast moving and without much moisture, but the lift of the
vort-max overhead and local orographic forcing should produce some
light precipitation. The most favored area is the Sierra Madre range
once again. The GFS is trending towards a scenario where a plume of
saturated WSW winds associated with low to mid level frontogenesis
shifts across our area Sunday night. This would favor a period of
decent snowfall in the Sierra Madres which are strongly favored in
southwest flow. Light snow showers may develop over the lower
elevations during the day on Monday. Forecast soundings show fairly
steep lapse rates with significant CAA aloft, but there is
uncertainty in the moisture availability. The GFS is fairly dry
in the 700 to 500-mb layer, while the ECMWF is slightly more moist
and is thus able to kick off more widespread snow showers over
the high plains. Continued with low end PoPs to describe this
possibility, but QPF is very light owing to the lack of moisture
and clear widespread lifting signal. Could see an advisory being
needed in the Sierra Madre range at this time, if the
frontogenetic moist southwest flow comes to fruition, but may be
able to be headline free elsewhere.

Quieter weather is likely for Tuesday and Wednesday as a broad
ridge moves over the western CONUS on top of the lingering cutoff
low in the southwest. Winds aloft drop off significantly after 00z
Tuesday, with 700-mb temperatures climbing back to around -5C.
The deterministic GFS is fairly warm especially on Wednesday, but
it's worth noting that it is outside the GEFS distribution. Thus,
went with the middle of the road for temperatures since we don't
have clear downslope enhancement to nudge temperatures upward. We
may have to watch for a strong surface high to take shape over the
interior Rockies, which may lead to elevated MSLP gradients
across the barrier and potentially some elevated gap flow despite
weak winds aloft. Overall, winds look lighter for this period.

Looking ahead to the end, forecast uncertainty increases
considerably. Possibilities range from continued ridging to another
Pacific trough. The deterministic GFS and ECMWF both have an upper
trough bringing in light snow and colder temperatures for Thursday
and Friday, but ensembles remain fairly split. The ensemble means
are fairly inconclusive, showing near average 500-mb heights for
this time period. Thus, included some minimal PoPs and lower
temperatures for the end of the work week, but this is just to
hint at the possibility. The details remain very fuzzy.

weaken as it pushes into the Great Plains. Another weak Pacific
shortwave trough will brush Wyoming tonight, resulting in increasing
mid to high clouds.

HAZARDS/WEATHER TRENDS: VFR conditions expected for all terminals.
Gusty winds late this morning will diminish late this afternoon and
into this evening. Diurnal winds will quickly increase again by 12z
to 17z Saturday. Added LLWS to KAIA and KBFF tonight when surface
winds decouple and become VRB.

Elevated winds in southeast Wyoming today with strong winds still
expected in the wind prone areas of southeast Wyoming. High Wind
Warnings remain in effect for the wind prone areas. Still have a
stalled out front laying across western Nebraska into northeast
Wyoming this morning...that is increasing pressure gradients
across southeast Wyoming. Westerly downsloping winds off the
Laramie Range is creating very poor overnight humidity recoveries.
But since we do have a substantial snowpack in place...fire
weather concerns are minimal. Windy conditions continue through
the weekend. Warmer temperatures will begin to erode the
snowpack...but again fire weather concerns will be minimal. Next
chance for snow looks to be Monday when our next cold front moves
into the area from the west.
