Looking at a chilly start to Christmas Day as latest
observations west of the Laramie Range have dropped into the
single digits while farther east into the NE Panhandle
temperatures remain in the middle teens. The low spot is
currently the Laramie Valley as KLAR has dropped to -11F.
Overall expecting a cold day with daytime highs mostly remaining
below the freezing mark.
Latest GOES WV imagery shows an upper level low in northeast CO
that will begin to wrap up with the system across eastern NE.
The surface low will begin the occlusion process later today as
the upper level low becomes fairly stationary across eastern
NE. An extensive TROWAL will stretch back westward bringing the
return of snowfall to the NE Panhandle and portions of eastern
WY. Additionally, strong north to northwest flow with a tight
700mb height gradient on the back side of the system could
support the development of blizzard conditions at times,
especially along northern slopes of the Pine and Cheyenne
Ridges. Model runs over the last 24 hours continue with the
westward trend in QPF and snowfall bringing eastern portions of
the CWA more into play with impactful winter weather beginning
late tonight through Tuesday.
As far as headlines go, upgraded to Winter Storm Warnings for
the northern NE Panhandle while also included Niobrara Co in
east-central WY. Blizzard conditions may still be possible and
will need to be monitored for potential upgrades. Hi-res
guidance has shown areas near Chadron with relatively lighter
winds in the wake of the Black Hills with northwest flow,
however higher elevations in the Pine Ridge near Chadron State
Park may still experience more significant drifting/blowing snow
with visibility reductions.
Across the I-80 corridor from the Summit through Cheyenne,
upgraded to a High Wind Warning for 60+ mph wind gusts, but
still have concerns for ground blizzard conditions developing
near the Summit. 700mb flow exceeds 50 kt for a large swath of
southeast WY with in-house guidance still showing 60%
probabilities for high winds near Vedauwoo.
For east Laramie Co in WY and the southern NE Panhandle,
converted the High Wind Watches to Winter Storm Watches as
blizzard conditions are possible. 60 mph wind gusts still look
likely, but with the westward shift in model guidance with this
system, higher snowfall totals work into northern areas of the
Cheyenne ridge. This could lead to more significant reductions
to visibility in blowing snow, but confidence remains low at
this time. HREF 10th to 90th percentile has 1 to 9 inches for
areas in the southern NE Panhandle north of I-80. If model
trends begin to head back down towards the lower end of the
distribution, could always move back to high wind products.

After we finally get rid of this persistent storm system, the
weather pattern is expected to trend warmer and drier again
through the end of 2023.
Wednesday will be a transition day across the area. The sprawling
low pressure system responsible for this week's wind and snow will
finally start to weaken after becoming vertically stacked.
Simultaneously, an amplifying ridge over the Rockies will help push
the closed low off to the east, reducing its influence over our
area. Weak isentropic lift in the moist wrap-around flow may still
be present Wednesday morning, so eastern portions of the area can
expect some lingering snow showers tapering off through the day as
sunshine gradually returns and the winds weaken. The ridge axis
moves overhead by Thursday beginning a warming trend across the
area. 700-mb temperatures recover to around -2C by Thursday, likely
ushering in warmer than normal temperatures in once again. This
should hold through the weekend as the ridge remains more or less
overhead. However, this isn't looking like the cleanest ridge, as
most models have numerous vorticity maximums traversing over,
around, or even through the ridge from Friday through the weekend.
There is quite a bit of disparity in the exact handling of these
shortwaves, so it's much too early to discuss any specifics. This is
responsible for a return of low-end PoPs into the mountains during
this period, but confidence in appreciable snow is fairly low as the
blocking ridge will likely weaken any shortwave troughs and limit
the moisture tap.

Wyoming Terminals... VFR conditions expected at all terminals
through the early portion of the TAF period. Ceiling and
visibility have improved at KLAR and is expected to remain
clear until later this afternoon. Snow showers approaching KCYS
by 06Z and KLAR around 07Z. KRWL not expected to see snow at
this time. Winds will be gusty, approaching 40kts at KCYS and
30kts at KLAR.
Nebraska Terminals... VFR conditions across all terminals at
this time, but this will begin to change over the next few
hours. Snow showers are expected to move into the Panhandle
between 00 and 02Z. Conditions will deteriorate quickly once the
snow moves in. Blowing snow will be an additional threat as
winds are expected to gust between 35 and 45kts. Any snow that
falls will be blown around and reduce visibility at the
terminals. Conditions not expected to improve until after the
18Z TAF period.
