Afternoon WV/VIS animation showed extensive mid/high clouds within
a fast northwest flow aloft between a high amplitude upper ridge
off the Pacific Coast and a upper trough from the Great Lakes to
the southern Rockies. Surface features included a front from the
western Dakotas into central CO, a trough draped over western WY,
and 1040mb high in northwest CO. The very tight pressure gradient
between these systems has generated strong westerly surface winds
affecting portions of I-80 between Cheyenne and Rawlins, and I-25
between Chugwater and Wheatland. Peak wind gusts varied from 65 to
75 MPH. Highway webcams across these areas indicated considerable
blowing/drifting snow with reduced visibilities. Temperatures
ranged from the upper teens to lower 30s. Regional radars detected
mostly light snow showers over portions of southeast WY and the
NE Panhandle.
The forecast concerns through the short term will focus on strong
winds, snow accumulations and temperatures.
The tight 700/850mb height gradients and fast 700-800mb west-northwest
flow will favor strong winds across the wind-prone areas of southeast
WY through Friday afternoon/early evening. High Wind Warnings
will continue with gusts exceeding 65 MPH at times before the
gradients relax Friday night and Saturday.
There is good model/ensemble consensus supporting a continuation
of the fast northwesterly flow aloft accompanied by several clipper
shortwave troughs passing over the region. The first trough will
progress southeast through the northern Plains and Midwest into
Friday morning, another moving through the northern/central Rockies
and Plains late Friday, followed by a stronger trough through the
northern Rockies and Plains by Saturday night, which will allow
arctic air to spill into the CWA. The combination of large scale
and orographic lift will enhance snowfall, especially over the
higher terrain, including the Laramie, Snowy/Sierra Madre,
Ferris/Shirley/Seminoe Ranges, and Pine Ridge from east-central WY
into the northern NE Panhandle. Regarding winter headlines, Winter
Storm Warnings continue for heavy snow accumulations (16 to 28
inches) for the Snowy/ Sierra Madre Ranges through Saturday
afternoon. Also, Winter Weather Advisories continue for much
of Carbon County for 2 to 10 inches of snow. A recent change was
to add Advisories for the North Laramie Range, Converse, Niobrara,
North Sioux and Dawes counties for 3 to 10 inches of snow from
Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Favored areas will
be the Pine Ridge and North Laramie Range where upslope northerly
flow will enhance snowfall.
Temperature-wise, Friday will be the mildest (depending on your
perspective) day with highs in the mid to upper 30s east of the
Laramie Range. The leading edge of the arctic airmass will be
entering the northeast zones late Friday night, and progress
southwest to the Laramie Range by Saturday afternoon, to southwest
Carbon/Albany counties Saturday evening. High temperatures will
likely occur overnight Friday into early Saturday morning, then
steadily fall through the morning and afternoon. By Sunday morning,
temperatures will have plummeted to -5 to 5 degrees. Wind chills
will lower to -10 to -20 degrees.

Minor adjustments were made to the long term, mainly temperatures
and winds. The northwesterly flow aloft will continue for early
to middle part of next week. The last in a series of shortwave
troughs will produce widespread snowfall Sunday through Monday.
An additional 8 to 12 inches is possible for the Snowy/Sierra
Madres, 2 to 6 inches lower elevations Carbon/Albany counties,
and up to 2 inches to the east. The arctic airmass will not budge
Sunday and Monday, before slowly retreating Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday, a upper ridge axis over the western CONUS will progress
eastward toward the Continental Divide. The flow aloft will become
more westerly which will allow temperatures to moderate closer
to seasonal normals.
The coldest stretch is forecast Sunday night through Monday night
as 700mb temperatures bottom out from -18C to -26C. Temperatures
by Monday morning will range from -5 to -15 degrees. Wind chills
are progged to range from -15 to -25 degrees, which may necessitate
the issuance of Wind Chill Advisories. High temperatures Monday
will remain in the single digits above zero. Low temperatures and
wind chills Monday night will be similar to Sunday night. High
temperatures Tuesday moderate into the teens and lower 20s, with
20s to lower 30s Thursday. In-house random forest high wind
guidance suggests another period of strong winds Monday night
and Tuesday for the wind-prone areas with potential gusts of
45 to 55 MPH.

hours. The primary forecast challenges will be with wind in the
Wyoming sites of LAR, CYS and RWL. Wind gusts could approach or
exceed 45 knots at RWL at times during the early evening hours.
Light snow will also begin at RWL around midnight tonight per the
latest HRRR/Nest guidance. CIG heights farther east in NE should
remain above MVFR thresholds. Forecast guidance indicates that the
current cloud deck should continue to drift east and thin during
the early afternoon. Some increase in this area of cloud cover may
return CIG condition to BKN/OVC overnight as an area of very light
snow passes through, mainly north of AIA.
