.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will track west of Pennsylvania through the
eastern Great Lakes late Friday, producing a myriad of
precipitation types over the state. A mixture of wet snow,
sleet and some freezing rain will spread northeast across the
region very late this morning and this afternoon.

The precipitation will change to plain rain for a several hour
period tonight to the south of Interstate 80.

A strong cold front will push through the state very late
tonight and early Saturday, followed by gusty west to northwest
winds and steady or slowly falling temperatures during the day
Saturday.

An additional light accumulation of snow from frequent snow
showers is also expected across the Northern and Western
Mountains of the state on Saturday.

Fair weather with lighter wind will return on Sunday as a ridge
of high pressure builds in from the Ohio Valley

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Clouds continue to increase, lower and thicken across central
and southern portions of the state. Precip breaking out on time
acrossing the Laurels and SC Mountains with a brief period of
snow to start. Maintaining the well layered cake of low-end
Winter Weather Advisories for all areas except for the South
Central Mtns and Lower Susq Valley today into tonight. Lower
Susq will have warmer temps with the bulk of precip falling as
rain later this afternoon/early tonight (after up to a few hour
period of wet snow/sleet) negating any significant impacts on
travel.

Gusty south winds associated with a potent southerly LLJ will
buffet the ridge tops this afternoon into early tonight. As the
sfc-850 mb low moves into SW New York early Saturday, west to
northwest winds will ramp up quickly in the wake of its swd
trailing strong cold front. 3 hour sfc pressure rises AOA 6 mb
will accompany the strong llvl CAA. So, in addition to the Wind
Advisory for the Laurels this afternoon and evening (with gusts
of 40 to 45 mph elsewhere on the ridges, a more potent wind
episode is possible across the SW 1/3 or so of our CWA Saturday,
especially near and just to the east of the I-99 corridor where
downsloping and funneling through gaps in the Allegheny Front
could lead to some 60+ mph West to NW gusts.

Temps today will rise to the mid 30s to around 40F across much
of Central PA and the Western Mtns, while the mercury climbs
into the low 40s throughout the Susq Valley where the later
precip onset (late this afternoon) and some periods of filtered
morning sunshine will occur.

This storm has some similarities as this past Mon-Tue's event,
though deep-layer uvvel and precip "rates" early on with this
storm could lead to a more distinct 1-3 hour period of wet
snow/sleet (and FZRA across the Laurels) before a change
to FZRA or plain rain occurs late this evening as temps inch up
to between 33-36 across much of Central and Southern PA.

The best chance for over an inch of snow appears to be across
the N Mtns, where the low to mid level cold air will take
longer to dislodge, and 850 mb wet bulbs will cool a few to
several deg C - back down to -3 to -5C between 00Z-03Z Sat after
the precip (mainly wet snow/sleet) falls for a few hours.

The GFS and 00Z Fri HREF both indicate the possibility for a
brief 1-2 hour period of moderate snow in this part of the
state late this afternoon and again around or shortly after
midnight, following and extended period of sleet and/or fzra,
producing a few inches of accumulation before the changeover.

Earlier snow/sleet forecast looks in pretty good shape. Did make
a few tweaks to the snow and ice grids where Advisories are in
effect. However, the most likely totals range from 1-3 inches
over the N Mtns, to nothing over the Lower Susq Valley.

Plenty of moisture in the 0-3km layer, combined with an
upsloping southeast flow, should yield lingering light
precipitation in the form of light rain/drizzle for much of the
area. However, model soundings indicate sleet or high elevation
fzra could persist over the N Mtns well into the night with
temps hovering around 30-32F. Also, strong upper level
diffluence ahead of potent mid level shortwave, combined with a
bit of elevated cape, suggest a few heavier showers, and even a
rumble of thunder, are possible later tonight.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
A tight pressure gradient behind the departing low, combined
with subsidence force by differential anticyclonic vorticity
advection, should result in increasingly gusty west winds on
Saturday. Bufkit soundings support gusts between 45-50kt across
the Laurel Highlands and just downwind of the I-99 corridor in
south-central PA (northern edge of a Sting Jet?), with somewhat
lower wgusts around 35-40kts elsewhere. Coordinated with KLWX
to post a High Wind Watch for our 4 Southwest Counties across
the Laurel Highlands and points just east for Saturday,
beginning shortly before daybreak.

Lingering low level moisture and orographic forcing
appears likely to support mixed rain/snow showers Saturday,
primarily over the NW Mtns. Otherwise, relatively cold temps
aloft should result in plenty of stratocu with the best
opportunity for breaks southeast of the Appalachians. Mixing
down 850mb temps of -3C to -5C translates to near seasonal
highs ranging from the upper 30s over the Alleghenies to the low
50s across the Lower Susq Valley.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
10PM Update: Recent model guidance continues to support residual
snow/rain showers across the northern half of CPA through
Saturday afternoon with some residual showers across the NW
Alleghenies prior to Sunday. Model runs have also tightened up
slightly pertaining to a surface low tracking through upstate NY
with a cold front tracking across PA Tuesday morning. Model
guidance continues to suggest lake effect snow with WNW flow
into the northern Alleghenies.

Weakening primary sfc should be over NW Pa Saturday
morning and is progged to drift ESE across central PA by midday
Saturday before exiting to the east and dissolving in the strong
cyclonic flow around the intense secondary low southeast of
Cape Cod. This will keep scattered rain and snow showers over
especially the northern half of central PA into Saturday
afternoon, diminishing by Sat night. High pressure builds in
Sunday to cap off the weekend with a mix of clouds and sun as
any lingering rain and snow showers will taper off over the
Alleghenies.

High pressure will remain over the region through Monday
morning before a warm front lifting into the eastern Great Lakes
potentially brushes the northern tier with isold to sct rain
showers in the afternoon, although forcing for this is slightly
farther north than model consensus depicted yesterday. The rest
of central PA should remain dry until Monday evening as a
surface low tracks into upstate NY, dragging a cold front across
central PA into Tuesday morning. Cooler conditions expected
Tuesday with scattered rain showers, with a transition to snow
showers in the north.

While there remains significant spread in solutions by the
middle of next week, models are overall trending colder for the
middle to latter part of next week with persistent WNW flow
across the central and eastern GLAKS maintaining lake effect and
orographic snow showers over the Alleghenies.

Precipitation timing not bad, will have to take a look at type
once something reaches the ground.

Main change was the winds, which are gusty in some spots now.

Mixed precipitation will move across central PA late this
morning through the afternoon. After initial VFR conditions this
morning, expect lowering cigs and vsbys as snow, sleet and rain
move into the region. Most sites will become IFR this afternoon
and evening and remain so until Saturday morning.

Winds will be out of the ESE today and tonight then shift out of
the west on Saturday. Strong LLWS is likely this afternoon and
evening.

Outlook...

mtns. Snow showers could linger NW. Wind gusts 15-25kt from
280-310 deg.
