.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will pass east of Pennsylvania early today, then
high pressure will build in from the Great Lakes tonight. A low
pressure system will track west of Pennsylvania through the
eastern Great Lakes late Friday. Upper level ridging is then
expected over the area Sunday into Monday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Breaking clouds and a lack of strong cold advection behind the
departing cold front should result in a very mild afternoon.
Mixing conservatively to 900mb yields expected max temps from
the mid 40s over the N Mtns, to the low 60s across the Lower
Susq Valley. Model soundings, which show some very dry air above
a weak inversion, support undercutting NBM dewpoints during the
afternoon over much of the region, especially the southern tier.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Focus tonight shifts to a potent southern stream shortwave
lifting out of the Miss Valley. This feature and its associated
surface low are progged by all guidance to track west of PA late
Friday, which should flood the area with warm air aloft.
However, a surface high north of New England should supply
enough cold air for snow or a wintry mix at the onset across at
least the central and northern mountains. Have slowed the
arrival of precipitation Friday based on latest guidance, with
northern PA not likely to see precip until late in the day.

The latest NAM soundings, which usually handles the arrival
of warm air aloft better than other models in scenarios where
low pressure tracks west of Pennsylvania, points to very little
snow with this event. Rather, a period of sleet changing to
rain or frza is depicted by the NAM, with the fzra confined
mainly to the ridgetops.

The best chance of over an inch of snow appears to be across
the N Mtns, where cold air will take longer to dislodge. The GFS
and 00Z HREF both indicate the possibility for a period of
moderate snow in this part of the state Friday PM, producing a
few inches of accumulation before the changeover. Have not made
much change to the earlier snow/sleet forecast, with most likely
totals ranging from 1-3 inches over the N Mtns, to nothing over
the Lower Susq Valley. We continue to undercut the NBM
temperatures Friday due to its warm bias in cold air damming
scenarios.

The anomalous easterly low level jet and steadiest
precipitation is likely to shift north of Pennsylvania Friday
night. However, plenty of moisture in the 0-3km layer, combined
with an upsloping southeast flow, should yield lingering light
precipitation in the form of light rain/drizzle for much of the
area. However, model soundings indicate sleet or high elevation
fzra could persist over the N Mtns well into the night. Also,
strong upper level diffluence ahead of potent mid level
shortwave, combined with a bit of elevated cape, suggest a few
heavier showers, and even a rumble of thunder, are possible
Friday night.

A tight pressure gradient behind the departing low, combined
with subsidence force by differential anticyclonic vorticity
advection, should result in increasingly gusty west winds on
Saturday. Bufkit soundings support gusts around 40kts across the
Laurel Highlands, with somewhat lower wgusts elsewhere.
Lingering low level moisture and orographic forcing appears
likely to support mixed rain/snow showers Saturday, primarily
over the NW Mtns. Otherwise, relatively cold temps aloft should
result in plenty of stratocu with the best opportunity for
breaks southeast of the Appalachians. Mixing down 850mb temps of
-3C to -5C translates to near seasonal highs ranging from the
 upper 30s over the Alleghenies to the low 50s across the Lower
 Susq Valley.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure builds in Sunday to cap off the weekend with a
mix of clouds and sun as any lingering rain and snow showers
will taper off over the Alleghenies.

High pressure will remain over the region through Monday
morning before a warm front lifting into the eastern Great Lakes
may bring rain showers into western PA throughout the day. The rest
of central PA should remain dry until Monday evening as a
surface low tracks into upstate NY, dragging a cold front
across central PA into Tuesday morning. Cooler conditions
expected Tuesday with scattered rain showers, with a transition
to snow showers in the north. Some scattered precipitation could
make its way into CPA on Wednesday, although confidence is low
with guidance giving a vast amount of solutions.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Downsloping wind shift to 270-320 deg behind cold/occluded
front will spell VFR flying across central and eastern TAFs
through the 02/12Z cycle...with current 1445z cigs improving to
VFR at KMDT/KLNS by 16z. Gusts up to 20kt are possible this
afternoon. MVFR to low VFR cigs are likely to linger across the
NW airspace/KBFD through tonight.

Outlook...

Fri...Restrictions likely with mixed precip. Wind gusts 20-30kt
from 080-160 deg. LLWS possible.

Sat...Light rain/snow early then drying out downwind of the
