Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cleveland OH
121 AM EST Mon Dec 18 2023
.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure moves across Ontario tonight as a more potent low
pressure deepens over the southeastern United States. This low
then tracks up the East Coast through Monday night as a trough
moves over the region. High pressure returns to the area Tuesday
and persists into Friday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
930 PM Update...
Brief break in precip with some patchy fog/mist is expected
through tonight before PoPs ramp up with the arrival of an upper
trough Monday morning. No changes were needed with the snowfall
forecast/precipitation chances with this update.
Previous Discussion...
Short wave/vort max moving over the west end of Lake Erie late this
afternoon. It continues to weaken as its energy is transferred to a
deepening area of low pressure off the East Coast of the US.
A cold front has moved into NW OH and will continue to to move
eastward through the evening. Steadiest of the rain was located just
east of the OH/PA border as of 2030Z and will continue to move
east with the better jet energy. Looks like there will be a
period of scattered showers or drizzle between the cold front
and the rain exiting to the east. We do keep some weak lift
across the region overnight with some potential of drizzle. Still
not sure how hard to hit this possibility at this point.
The next strong upper level trough moves into the central Great
Lakes overnight with a good push of colder air in its wake. Of note
is the cold air aloft with this feature as it moves overhead on
Monday. This may make it difficult to time the transition from rain
to snow. There is potential for some accumulating graupel before we
transition over to all snow late Monday afternoon into the evening.
So initially the rain/snow transition will be earliest in the higher
terrain of the CWA with all locations changing over to snow from
west to east through sunset. This sunset time period during the
evening commute may see some higher snow rates with impacts to
travel anticipated.
Temperatures will hold in the 40's this afternoon. We then cool
slightly in the wake of a cold front tonight with lows in the mid to
upper 30's. Very little diurnal range in temperatures is expected
Monday with increasing lift and dynamic cooling under the cold core
trough. It looks like highs Monday occur by mid/late morning then
slowly drop through the day. Highs may range from the upper 30's to
around 40.
Colder air quickly spills across the region Monday evening into the
overnight hours as a surface and upper level trough cross the
region. It appears there could be a decent burst of snow around
sunset Monday with impacts to the evening commute likely, especially
near and east of I-71. The region then transitions to lake effect
snow by midnight then continues into Tuesday morning. Headlines at
this point cover the best areas for lake effect snow producing 6+
inches of snow. Much of this will hinge on where a Lake Huron band
of snow can set up. If this band of snow off of Lake Huron is a bit
further to the west some of the heavier snow may get the higher
terrain of eastern Cuyahoga, northeastern Summit and northwestern
Portage Counties. So for now we have hoisted the Winter Storm Watch
for the regions that we believe have the best potential to 6+ inches
of snow. We fully expect to need winter weather advisories elsewhere
from the Mid Ohio Region higher terrain to locations surrounding the
watch. However we have decided to wait to allow later shifts decide
if we are going to go with more of an impact based advisory (slick
roads with accumulating snow during the evening commute) or if we
can really get to the 3 to 5 inches of snow needed for the
traditional way to reach a headline decision. Lows dip into the
20's Monday night but gusty northwesterly winds will make it
feel like it is in the teens.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Broad surface ridging will build in quickly Tuesday as the deep
mid/upper trough axis quickly shifts to a position from New England
to the Mid Atlantic by evening. Backing winds and a lowering
inversion combined with drier air advecting in will lead to lake-
effect snow bands weakening and shifting east fairly rapidly Tuesday
morning. Uncertain how long the feeder band from Lake Huron will
last, and these tend to linger longer than guidance suggests, but
feel it will be translating eastward into NW PA by early afternoon.
Additional snow accumulations will generally be a few tenths to up
to 1 inch Tuesday morning over the higher elevations east of
Cleveland and as far inland as Summit, Portage, and Trumbull
Counties, but could see an additional 1-2 inches in portions of
inland Ashtabula, southern Erie, and Crawford Counties where the
Lake Huron band lingers. Any leftover flurries will end by Tuesday
evening as the large area of surface high pressure slides over the
Ohio Valley. Clearing skies and light winds Tuesday night will set
up a cold night, but a rapid moderating trend will develop by
Wednesday as quasi-zonal, split mid/upper flow returns to the CONUS
bringing mild Pacific-based air eastward and the surface high shifts
into the Appalachians and mid Atlantic setting up return southerly
flow.
Highs in the upper 20s/low 30s Tuesday will warm into the upper
30s/low 40s Wednesday. Lows will fall into the upper teens to mid
20s Tuesday night (coldest in NE Ohio and NW PA), with mid 20s to
around 30 Wednesday night.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
If you are hoping for a white Christmas, I unfortunately have bad
news. The mild quasi-zonal mid/upper flow pattern from mid-week will
turn even warmer late week into next weekend as a series of closed
lows offshore of California move into the southern Rockies and 4
corners region through the weekend. This will amplify broad
mid/upper ridging over the eastern CONUS late week through the
weekend which includes Christmas Eve and beyond, leading to warm
temperatures. The only precipitation will be in the form of rain as
a weak mid/upper shortwave moving through the northern Plains
results in a weak surface low moving into the western Great Lakes by
Friday, with the associated cold front eventually nudging slowly
eastward over the weekend as a series of shortwaves eject out of the
western U.S. closed low. This will keep SW flow in place with
periods of showers Friday through Sunday, but kept PoPs at chance
given uncertainty in the timing of the best pieces of forcing. High
temperatures in the low/mid 40s Thursday and Friday will warm to
near 50 by Saturday and perhaps into the 50s by Sunday (Christmas
Eve).
&&
.AVIATION /06Z Monday THROUGH Friday/...
A few rain showers have filled in from Cleveland to Mansfield behind
the cold front which has now shifted east of the area. Temperatures
will continue to fall into Monday night as colder air continues
to filter into the region. Ceilings are primarily MVFR but may
drop to IFR at times overnight with best chances at NE Ohio
terminals. As we head towards morning, showers will return from
the northwest as a potent upper level trough moves south across
the area. A few stray showers may arrive as early as 12Z but are
really expected to fill after 15Z. Showers will start as rain in
most areas but a transition to snow will occur from west to east
during the afternoon. In addition, some locations may change
over to snow briefly in heavier bursts then change back to rain
before a final transition to snow occurs towards sunset. Sites
at higher elevations like MFD may also transition a little
faster than surrounding terminals. Visibilities will fluctuate
considerably with the rain/snow mix, sometimes dropping to a
mile or less. Winds become rather gusty during the afternoon
with northwest winds gusting to between 25-35 knots. A trough is
expected to cross Lake Erie after 00Z with all eastern
terminals seeing a period of snow. Snow on Monday night will be
moderate to heavy at times with visibilities dropping below a
mile at times at CLE/ERI/YNG/CAK and perhaps MFD. Best windows
of showers and heavier snow will need adjusted but the trend
will be for blustery conditions and occasional IFR.
Winds will be generally light at 10 knots or less overnight
before increasing towards 12Z with westerly winds starting to
gust to 20-25 knots. Winds shift to the northwest with the
passage of a trough between 15-22Z and increase. The strongest
winds will be in NW Ohio and at terminals closer to Lake Erie
where gusts to 30-35 knots are possible at times.
Outlook...Non-VFR conditions will continue into Tuesday morning
with occasional snow showers still at YNG/ERI and possible CLE.

.MARINE...
Well, it was a very quiet Fall in terms of strong winds on the lake,
but an impressive mid/upper trough and associated closed low
crossing the lake Monday afternoon and evening will generate strong
NW winds and high waves. Issued a Gale Warning starting at 15Z
Monday for the western and central basins to cover the steadily
increasing winds and waves, but the strongest winds of 30-35 knots
with gusts over 40 knots will not arrive until late Monday afternoon
through Monday night. The winds will start to diminish a little
faster west of the Islands, so ran the Gale Warning through 06Z
Tuesday, but it will take longer farther east, so ran the warning
through 09Z Tuesday for the central basin. The eastern basin from
Geneva to Ripley still looks to have winds peaking at 20-30 knots
Monday afternoon and Monday night, so went with a Small Craft
Advisory there from 15Z Monday through 18Z Tuesday. In fact, the
entire lake will likely see Small Craft conditions linger well into
Tuesday. The high winds and NW direction will generally 6 to 12 foot
waves Monday afternoon into Monday night along the south shores of
the lake, with the highest waves in the central basin. This will
lead to hazardous conditions for vessels.
By Tuesday afternoon, winds will back more to the W and decrease to
10-15 knots, with SW winds of 10-15 knots then expected Tuesday
night and Wednesday. S to SW winds will decrease to 5-10 knots by
Thursday, becoming S to SE at 10-15 knots Thursday night and Friday
as low pressure moves into the western Great Lakes.
