.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move across the northern half of Ohio on Friday,
with high pressure sliding across the region from west to east for
Saturday. Weak low pressure will track through the Tennessee Valley
Sunday before intensifying near New England Monday. Cold
northwest flow will develop behind this low pressure early next
week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Precipitation is now pushing as far east as eastern Indiana at
this time. We should see this activity continue to spread east
with time. Temperatures continued to fall across the area into
the lower and middle 30s across the central and eastern portions
of the forecast area. No real need to make wholesale changes
other than some cosmetic updates.
Previous Discussion...
A potent shortwave with Pacific origins will move southeast out of
the Great Lakes and across our forecast area on Friday. While this
occurs the shortwave will close off aloft while continuing to
deepen. At the surface, low pressure will take shape near St. Louis
this evening. This low pressure will enter southwestern Ohio early
Friday and track east-northeast towards western PA through the day
while gradually intensifying. This low pressure is likely to track
near or just south of Canton and Youngstown Friday afternoon. Low
pressure will quickly weaken Friday night as the closed low aloft
continues towards the East Coast and causes a developing Nor'easter
to take the energy from our initial low pressure.
The primary forecast concern and impact with this system will be
generally light to moderate snowfall potential. The key points:
1) Light to moderate wet snow will arrive early enough Friday
morning west of Cleveland and Akron that slushy and slick road
conditions can impact the Friday morning commute. Snow will be
quickly overspreading the rest of Northeast OH and Northwest PA
Friday morning, leading to potential for slushy/slick travel
developing in these areas during or just after the commute.
This period of road impacts (in a winter that's barely snowed)
occurring either during the commute or shortly thereafter
justifies the issuance of a Winter Weather Advisory, even in
some counties where widespread 4"+ snow may not be reached.
2) Locations from Marion to Wooster to Canton to Youngstown points
south will see either rain or a very wet snow that struggles to
accumulate Friday morning, leading to a sharp drop-off in
accumulation near the southern cut-off to the Winter Weather
Advisory. The southernmost tier of advisory counties will be
on this snowfall gradient and will likely have a noticeable
north-south snowfall gradient across them.
3) The snow will gradually increase in intensity and organization as
it lifts east across the area, with the greatest snow rates and
longer duration of heavy rates across far Northeast OH and
Northwest PA. Rates of 1" per hour may occur at times in our
northeastern counties, and several inches are expected to fall
here through Friday afternoon.
4) Temperatures will largely be near or slightly above freezing in
any snow, adding a significant wrinkle to the accumulation forecast.
Steady snow falling at night or moderate to heavy rates during
the day should accumulate. Lighter rates will not accumulate
(especially on roads) during the day. This will likely lead to
conditions quickly improving from southwest to northeast late
Friday morning and early afternoon as a dry slot and perhaps
some mixing with rain work in. An exception is far Northeast OH
and Northwest PA where snow will be more intense and last longer
into the afternoon.
5) Light wrap-around snow (including some lake enhancement) returns
later Friday into Friday night, especially from Sandusky and
Mansfield points east. Additional accumulations will be fairly
minor but the returning snow, gusty winds, and falling
temperatures can lead to slick travel and walking conditions re-
developing as the sun sets.
6) The persistence and organization of banding from extreme
Northeast OH into Northwest PA during the day Friday is somewhat
uncertain. More organized/persistent heavy banding could overcome
the marginal temperatures and higher sun angle enough for amounts to
locally over-perform from parts of Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula
Counties into Erie and Crawford Counties PA (greatest concern
appears to be from parts of Ashtabula County into inland
portions of Erie County and northern Crawford County). While too
uncertain to issue any Warnings at the moment this will need to
be monitored.
7) Lows tonight will range from the upper 20s to the mid 30s. Highs on
Friday will range from 32-36 degrees across the Winter Weather
Advisory to 35-40 degrees south. Lows Friday night will range
from the mid 20s to near 30.
Meteorological Comments:
The big picture has not changed much over the last several forecast
cycles, but some details remain uncertain given the near-freezing
temperatures and March sun angle muddying the accumulation
potential. There will be a sharp southern cut-off to snowfall
accumulations somewhere in the vicinity of Findlay, Mansfield,
Wooster, Akron and Warren. It seems likely that the 850mb low
track will be from near Findlay to Cleveland to Meadville. Rain
can mix in for a time as far north as this low track, with the
southern gradient in accumulations setting up just south of this
low track. The 700mb low track is expected to be across Lake
Erie to near Ashtabula and then inland into Northwest PA. Banded
precipitation is likely to maximize along and just ahead of
this 700mb low, with the banding pivoting over the northeast
corner of our area later Friday morning and into the afternoon
as the low closes off and deepens aloft, slows down, and turns
more southeast. Any small track adjustments with these mid-
level low tracks will influence snow amounts, though significant
adjustments aren't expected. This banded snow should lose
organization and intensity by later Friday afternoon as the
strongest lift shifts east of the area, with East Coast low
pressure taking over into Friday night.
The snow entering from the west overnight into early Friday will
largely be driven by moist isentropic lift as warm air advection
occurs up a sloped warm frontal surface. Moderate lift will largely
maximize below a saturated dendritic growth zone, suggesting light
to moderate snow rates with fairly modest snow ratios. An embedded
narrower band of mid-level frontogenesis may focus transient bands
of briefly heavy snow with rates in excess of 0.5" per hour (but
likely less than 1" per hour for the most part). This steady snow
falling early in the day should be able to muster some accumulations
on roadways into the morning commute from the Cleveland area points
west.
Through the morning and into the afternoon, as the band of snow
gradually lifts east/northeast into the eastern lakeshore
counties, a few things will allow for it to become more focused
and intense. The system aloft will continue to deepen and close
off, leading to a general increase in lift and tightening of the
frontogenesis. This will help any banded snow become more
focused and organized. In addition, a modest TROWAL feature is
expected to work in from the south/southeast as the low closes
off with cool/dry air advecting in above 600mb on the nose of
the dry slot. This combination of factors should lead to an
increase in instability aloft through the morning and afternoon.
At the same time, the band of snow will slow down and pivot
over parts of Lake Erie, far Northeast OH, and Northwest PA due
to the low reaching maturity and closing off. This all leads to
snow rates (and the duration of the rates) increasing as the
snow lifts into far Northeast OH and Northwest PA. The highest
overall accumulations are expected here. The duration of banding
and amount of QPF suggests warning criteria snowfall may still
play out somewhere. Questions regarding how efficiently snow
can accumulate and how bad the roads get beneath the midday
March sun precluded any warnings with this update. Can not rule
out needing to issue a targeted Winter Storm Warning in later
updates if confidence increases for a few counties. Main concern
is parts of Ashtabula, Erie, and Crawford though this more
focused banding could begin taking shape as far west as
Cleveland during the morning and as far south as northern
Portage and trumbull Counties.
Outside of the northeast corner of our area the general lull in
snowfall later Friday morning into the afternoon will allow
road conditions to quickly improve...especially as the marginal
surface temperatures and March sun angle do their work. However,
temperatures drop below freezing late in the day into the
evening with wrap-around moisture and modest lake enhancement
bringing a return of (mainly light) snow from roughly Sandusky
and Mansfield points east. This can lead to slick conditions re-
developing. For this reason, ran all Advisories from Erie and
Huron Counties points east until 7 AM Saturday. Future shifts
can re-evaluate the end time as needed. The lake enhanced snow
set-up will not be all that heavy due to only modest
instability and low inversion heights. The lake induced
instability will only extend up to -10 to -12C (near the bottom
of the dendritic growth zone) due to the low inversion, meaning
ratios will remain modest. Fresh accumulations Friday night
into early Saturday will largely be modest, though persist lake
enhanced snow could drop up to 2 or 3" in some of the hills just
inland from the lake in the primary and secondary snowbelts with
a north-northwest wind. Synoptic moisture gradually strips away
into Saturday which will cause snow coverage and intensity to
gradually subside later Friday night.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Lingering scattered lake effect snow showers will be winding down by
Saturday morning for the primary and secondary Snowbelt region. High
pressure north of the Great Lakes region will build down on
Saturday. Considerable cloudiness will stick around on Saturday
which will keep daytime highs very chilly in the lower to middle
30s. The next weather system impact our region will quickly arrive
late Saturday night into Sunday. A shortwave trough will move across
the Ohio Valley on Sunday with limited moisture. The overall QPF for
this late weekend system will average around or just slight over a
tenth an inch. As the system moves in very early Sunday morning, the
precip will start out as snow. As temperatures climb into the middle
and upper 30s on Sunday, the precip will become a light rain/snow
mix. Snowfall amounts will be an inch of less with this system.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The main weather message for early next week will be cold and
scattered light snow showers. An upper level trough will set up over
the Great Lakes region Monday into Tuesday. A northerly to northwest
flow will bring down colder air over the lakes. We will see periods
of scattered light lake effect snow showers for much of our area.
There could be some light rain/snow mix at times during the
afternoon hours. Light snowfall amounts will be possible, especially
for the primary and secondary Snowbelt areas and at night.
Temperatures will be below average with daytime highs in the 30s and
nighttime lows in the 20s. An upper level ridge may start to build
in from the west by the middle of next week with milder weather.

.AVIATION /00Z Friday THROUGH Tuesday/...
High level clouds continue to move into the eastern portions of
the forecast area and now a mid level deck has entered the west.
Precipitation is on the doorstep to Toledo and Findlay and
expecting to see this develop in the next few hours. There is
the possibility that Findlay could start out as a mix or
rain/snow and then change to all snow. There is the possibility
that precipitation will start out as rain or a rain/snow mix
over the east due to the later onset time. Although, along the
northern tier counties near the lake, precipitation should be
primarily snow. Will keep the winter weather advisory where it
is currently in effect across the northern half of the area on
a line from Findlay to just north of Mansfield, Canton, and
Youngstown. Ceilings and visibilities will be reduced to IFR
with periods of LIFR possible as precipitation intensifies over
the area overnight into the morning hours. Expecting to see
some gradual improvement from west to east by late tomorrow
afternoon. Winds from the east-northeast should begin to
increase with time as the low pressure system approaches to
around 15 to 25 knots by tomorrow afternoon.
Outlook...Non-VFR continues in lake effect snow showers for the
Snowbelt region into Saturday. Non-VFR may return by the end of
the weekend into early next week.

.MARINE...
As high pressure shifts east of the area tonight, an increase in
easterly winds will occur with the pressure gradient tightening
ahead of the next system. Winds will increase to 15 to 25 knots and
waves will build west of the Islands. Have issued a Small Craft
Advisory beginning tonight and continuing through Friday for these
areas with Small Crafts expected to be issued for all nearshore
waters as winds back to northeasterly on Friday. Winds on the open
waters are forecast to increase to 30 knots on the central and
eastern basin of the lake.
Marine conditions will improve as high pressure arrives Saturday
afternoon and night. Another low pressure system is expected to
track through the Ohio Valley Sunday night with sub-advisory winds
backing from northeast to northwest. A series of cold fronts is
forecast to cross Lake Erie Monday night into Tuesday leading to
increasing winds and waves.
