.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure eventually moves over eastern Ohio from the south
Tuesday afternoon. Low pressure develops over the lower
Mississippi Valley and tracks northeastward over the region
Wednesday, but quickly moves off the New England coast Thursday.
High pressure builds across the region Friday before the next
area of low pressure impacts the area this weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Looking at the coverage of the snow along the cold front in
Michigan has given us enough confidence to increase the POP's
slight across NW PA from around sunrise through the remainder of
the morning. Just made it so that there was a window of
categorical POPS (gt 75%).
There may be some brief clearing across the southwestern CWA.
However it will be short lived as the cloud cover from the next
storm system is about to replace the lower clouds cover. This
may allow for an larger area of mid 20's.
Previous Discussion... The low pressure that has brought snow
to the area over the last 24-hours has shifted off the New
England coast. Behind this system, high pressure has begun to
build over the area this afternoon, allowing for the bulk of
snow showers to stop. With low level moisture lingering this
evening, a few flurries cannot be ruled out, however no
additional accumulations are expected. The main focus of the
forecast for tonight was the increasing winds from the southwest
to 15-20 mph, with local gusts up to 30 mph. The strongest
winds will be focused across the northern counties where the LLJ
is the strongest. Cloudy skies will persist overnight,
moderating temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s.
On Tuesday morning, a weak upper level shortwave will push
across the northern portion of the area, providing another
chance for scattered snow showers along the surface boundary,
especially in the snowbelt where an additional up to 1" of snow
is possible.
After the shortwave moves east of the area by Tuesday afternoon,
high pressure will become dominant and allow for a brief period
of dry weather. The downfall will be that clouds will linger
across the area as increased moisture advection pushes into the
area. These dry conditions will continue into the early hours of
Tuesday before widespread snow showers begin to push north in
association with an approaching low from the lower Mississippi
Valley. There is a chance that these initial snow showers could
impact the morning commute on Wednesday. A more extensive look
at this system will be in the short term forecast discussion,
but thought it was worth mentioning that precip onset is
expected closer to 6Z Wednesday (very early Wednesday morning).
High temperatures on Tuesday will reach into the low to mid 30s,
with overnight lows cooling into the upper 20s to low 30s.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As a trough takes on a negative tilt as it moves into the Great
Lakes, low pressure that will be lifting into the lower Ohio Valley
to start Wednesday will lift towards Lake Erie Wednesday afternoon
and evening before drifting east and transferring its energy to
the New England coast Wednesday night into Thursday. This
evolution will bring precipitation to the whole forecast area,
arriving as snow late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning before
transitioning to rain from south to north Wednesday afternoon
and evening. A brief period of mixed precipitation is possible
during the transition from snow to rain. Northwest Ohio still
stands the greatest chance at remaining mainly or all snow,
though even here have a bit of rain mentioned for a time late in
the day Wednesday. As the low pulls away Wednesday night a
transition back to mainly light snow (with some lake
enhancement) is expected as the system's deformation zone wraps
through our area. Any steadier synoptic snow tapers to lingering
flurries or nuisance snow showers Thursday. Lake enhancement
will contribute to the potential for more moderate additional
amounts from the Cleveland metro points east through northwest
PA late Wednesday night through Thursday evening.
On the front end of the system an impressive surge of strong warm
air and moisture advection is expected to push a slug of
precipitation into the area, with a band of mid-level frontogenesis
on the northern side of this surge potentially enhancing
precipitation rates. Temperatures at the surface and aloft will be
cold enough for this precipitation to start as all snow early
Wednesday, and any bands of frontogenetical enhanced snow may
be accompanied by rates over 1" per hour. With this spreading in
from south to north early Wednesday, when pavement temperatures
will be relatively chilly, potential is there for a period of
low visibility and snow covered roads that can significantly
impact travel. Depending on how quickly the snow spreads in
impacts to the Wednesday AM commute are a real possibility, with
the greatest likelihood for a very poor commute along and south
of the Route 30 corridor with some spread in terms of the exact
arrival time of the snow farther north...though, if it's not
snowing during the commute farther north it will start shortly
thereafter Wednesday morning.
While this initial surge of snow looks to pack a punch, many models
quickly shift the stronger lift across our area with warm air
advection supporting a quick change to rain by midday or early
afternoon on Wednesday. This would limit snow amounts to only be
a couple/few inches from this front-end snow across most of the
area even if rates and impacts are briefly significant. The
lift will be impressive with the initial slug of snow but the
snow growth zone is skinny and fairly high (between 500-600mb)
with surface temperatures near freezing, meaning snow to liquid
ratios will be near or even slightly less than 10:1. With a
fairly quick-moving system QPF is "only" between 0.50-0.75",
meaning even if parts of our area remain mostly or all snow it
will be hard to see more than 6 or 7" of it. Models such as the
GFS and NAM track the low towards northwest Ohio, leading to a
quicker south to north progression of the snow band on Wednesday
and more modest totals. On the other hand, the European and
Canadian models track the low a bit farther east through
northeast Ohio and hence lift the snow band north a bit slower,
leading to these models out-putting several inches of snow
across the entire CWA. It seems like northwest Ohio is most
likely to see a longer period of snow regardless of the exact
low track so this is where the forecast has a solid 4-7" of
snow, but with the caveat that a westward trend could still eat
into that forecast snowfall. Farther east amounts are generally
in the realm of 2-4" through Wednesday evening, but with the
acknowledgement that the farther east solution offered by the
European and Canadian models would likely cause those numbers to
go up by a couple of inches. Am not expecting much icing, but
there may be a brief window from interior portions of Ohio into
inland northwest PA where the warming aloft out-paces the
warming at the surface late morning into the early afternoon
Wednesday, so a brief period of freezing rain or sleet and a
light glaze of ice is possible.
The above-mentioned storm totals do not take into account the
lingering wrap-around and lake enhancement late Wednesday night
through Thursday evening. Outside of the primary snowbelt from
Cuyahoga County points east additional snow Thursday into
Thursday night will be rather light. While this isn't an extreme
lake effect set-up by any means, deep lingering synoptic
moisture, 850mb temperatures inching down to -10 to -12C, and
convergence/upslope along the eastern lakeshore and into the
nearby hills may lead to rather persistent light to moderate
snow that can add several more inches Thursday into Thursday
night, with the low-level ridge axis moving overhead Thursday
night and trying to push any lingering lake snow out of our
area.
In terms of headlines, agree with the prior shift that the initial
thump of snow (and perhaps a brief wintry mix) will likely warrant
an Advisory for most or all of our area, especially if it impacts
the Wednesday AM commute. Issued a Winter Storm Watch for parts of
Northwest Ohio where confidence in remaining mainly snow is higher,
with totals of 4-7" in the forecast. Can not rule out needing to
expand the watch or issue warnings farther east if the slightly
colder solution comes to fruition, but with the storm's upper-
level trough digging and taking on a negative tilt to our west
(a classic warning sign for a messy/rainy solution) confidence
isn't high enough yet to go with a more expansive Watch
headline. Totals from parts of Cuyahoga County points east
through the snowbelt will be higher due to the lake enhanced
snow that kicks in Thursday into Thursday night, but the current
thinking is with such a break between the initial thump of snow
earlier Wednesday and the wrap- around/lake enhanced snow that
a long-duration Winter Wx Advisory may be appropriate than a
Warning when the time comes...so, did not issue any Watches for
the Cleveland metro or snowbelt with this cycle. Given some
uncertainty regarding both the synoptic and lake enhanced
components we will continue to monitor for trends and adjust the
snow forecast and headlines as needed into Tuesday.
Highs Wednesday will range from the low to mid 30s in northwest Ohio
to the mid to upper 30s elsewhere, with highs occurring late in the
day. Used a blend of models, with a heavier weighting towards the
hi-res NAM and RGEM, to try to better capture Wednesday's
temperature trace (keeping temperatures from rising through
midday when steadier precip/snow is expected). Lows Wednesday
night will range from the upper 20s to lower 30s, with little
temperature rise Thursday. Lows will get well into the 20s
Thursday night.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A re-enforcing cold front sinks into northern Ohio Friday night,
likely accompanied by some snow showers. A wave of low pressure
will attempt to track along this front later Saturday into
Sunday which may bring another light to perhaps moderate round
of snow and/or rain depending on the track of this wave of low
pressure. High pressure builds in early next week, though
lingering lake effect could keep some snow chances going
downwind of Lake Erie.
Temperatures will be near average for the long range, with lows
mainly in the 20s and highs mainly in the 30s.

.AVIATION /06Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/...
Some low level dry air may move as far east as a KFDY TO MFD to
K4I3 line overnight. This should allow these sites to briefly
lose the MVFR ceilings until the cold front gets closer to the
area around sunrise. Otherwise it looks like the remainder of
the region keeps MVFR ceilings.
The cold front moves across the region by mid morning Tuesday.
This should cause a brief period of light snow with IFR
conditions across NE OH into NW PA.
West to southwest of 10 to 18 knots are expected through the
morning. Gusts should reach 20 to 25 knots at most locations.
Winds become light by afternoon/evening as high pressure
briefly moves over eastern Ohio.
Outlook...Non-VFR continues Tuesday night into Wednesday in
rain/snow. Non-VFR anticipated with a cold front and
precipitation Saturday.

through Tuesday afternoon as brisk west-southwest winds and
elevated waves will be in place. We will need to watch water
levels over western Lake Erie tonight, though impression is
they'll remain just high enough to avoid a Low Water Advisory.
The Small Craft Advisory may need to be extended in time a bit,
but will make that determination closer to its expiration. Brisk
easterly winds develop on Wednesday and may require Small Craft
headlines for the western basin. Winds turn northwest Wednesday
night into Thursday, likely warranting renewed Small Craft
Advisories for the central and eastern basin. Winds should
remain below gale this week despite the rather agitated lake.
