.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will track from the Gulf Coast towards Lake Erie
tonight through Wednesday before departing to the east Wednesday
night and Thursday. After brief high pressure on Friday, a cold
front sinks into the area on Saturday from the northwest. Low
pressure will track east along this front on Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
935 PM Update...
Will be watching for the latest synoptic models to see if
timing and evolution of the overspreading snow is on track in
the morning. Temperatures have begun to drop a couple degrees,
but still above freezing in northwest and north central OH.
Precipitation still back in southern Illinois at this hour, but
will quickly track towards northern OH.

Original Discussion...
A pleasant afternoon and evening before low pressure brings a hodge
podge of of weather to the local area late tonight and Wednesday.
While some fine-tuning to the forecast has been made the general
idea remains the same and no changes to the Winter Wx
Advisory/Winter Storm Warning have been made.

Highlights:

1) A band of steady snow, with embedded pockets of heavy snow,
quickly overspreads the area from south to north late tonight
into Wednesday morning. Snow rates of 1" per hour can occur at
times Wednesday morning, leading to reduced visibility and snowy
road conditions.

2) Snow will change to rain showers later Wednesday morning or
early in the afternoon. Brief mixed precipitation may occur
during this transition.

3) Northwest Ohio, including the Toledo metro, will remain just
on the cold side of the storm and remain mainly snow Wednesday
afternoon.

4) As the system pulls away Wednesday night rain will change
back to snow across the area. For most of us any new
accumulations Wednesday night into early Thursday will be light
(less than 1"), though locations from the Cleveland metro points
east across the snowbelt may see 1-3" of new snow Wednesday
night into early Thursday with additional lake effect to follow.

5) Lows will be in the upper 20s/lower 30s tonight. Highs on
Wednesday will occur late in the day and range from the low to mid
30s in northwest Ohio to the upper 30s/lower 40s elsewhere. Lows
Wednesday night settle into the upper 20s and lower 30s yet again.

Impacts/Headlines:

1) The main impact will be reduced visibility and snow-covered roads
leading to a period of poor travel conditions during or just after
the Wednesday morning commute. A Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for these impacts, with accumulations of a couple/few
inches for most of the area.

2) In Northwest Ohio continued snow accumulations through the
afternoon will lead to accumulations of 4 to 7" by Wednesday
evening. This will cause more prolonged and overall greater
impacts to travel. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the
Toledo metro and I-75 corridor for these overall greater
impacts.

3) Rain and melting snow may lead to ponding of water in some areas
Wednesday afternoon.

4) Strong wind gusts along and north of I-90 in Erie County, PA may
warrant a Wind Advisory Wednesday afternoon. Future shifts will
monitor trends in forecast wind gusts.

5) Minor travel impacts can re-develop later Wednesday night as
temperatures drop below freezing and as rain changes to light snow,
especially in the Cleveland area and points east across the
snowbelt. Lake enhanced snow late Wednesday night and beyond will
likely require a follow-up Winter Wx Advisory from Cuyahoga County
points east after the headlines for the system snow expire.

Meteorological Commentary on the Forecast:

No major changes to the big picture today. A slug of precipitation
ahead of the approaching low pressure late tonight into Wednesday
morning. The combination of divergence into the right-entrance
quadrant of a 140 knot jet streak and strong warm/moist air
advection on the nose of a 60-70 knot low-level jet ahead of an
approaching negatively tilted upper-level trough will squeeze out a
period of steady snow into Wednesday morning. This period of steady
snow will arrive early in the day when pavement temperatures
will be chilly, allowing for accumulations on roadways, which
along with reduced visibility will cause a period of poor
travel conditions across the entire area. Outside of northwest
Ohio this initial period of snow centered on Wednesday morning
will be the main impact from this system across our area.

Most of today's hi-res models (that can better resolve mesoscale
banding and its associated QPF/) trended lighter on QPF with
this phase of the storm, resulting in a slight decrease in
forecast snowfall across the area. In particular, slightly later
arrival and downslope flow may lead to a local minimum in
snowfall amounts along the lakeshore from Cleveland to Erie.
However, the travel impacts we've been expecting are still
expected, especially where snow is ongoing during the morning
commute. Models disagree on the amount of mid-level
frontogenesis within this shield of snow...bands of stronger
frontogenesis could produce narrow corridors of 1-2" per hour
snow rates and the potential to locally overperform, especially
with such a dynamic and moisture-rich storm. Despite the overall
QPF and snowfall trending down slightly with this cycle, it's
worth noting that the NAM still has a zone of very strong
frontogenesis and lift across parts of our area Wednesday
morning leading to a zone of higher snowfall rates and greater
total snowfall. The NAM may be overdone, but incoming shifts
will need to closely monitor the potential for mesoscale banding
to lead to locally higher amounts and greater impact given the
larger scale dynamics and amount of moisture to work with. The
main risk for this is across our southern counties from Marion
and Mansfield over towards Akron, Canton, and Youngstown.

As a dry slot and warmer air work in from the southern later in the
morning and into the afternoon the band of snow will lift to the
north and a change to rain will occur fairly quickly, with just a
brief window of potential mixed precipitation (sleet or freezing
rain) during the transition due to a lack of a truly cold surface
airmass ahead of this system. The quick accumulation of wet snow in
the morning followed by a change to rain and warmer temperatures in
the afternoon may lead to some ponding of water and slush in parking
lots and on roadways...not true flooding but potentially annoying.

Northwest Ohio remains the exception, as they'll be on the northwest
side of the low track. The dry slot and/or brief mixing may get into
eastern portions of the Winter Storm Warning counties during the
afternoon. However, we generally expect continued light to moderate
snowfall to continue through the afternoon as decreased stability on
the edge of the dry slot interacts with the storm's comma head
across the northwestern fringes of our area. This will lead to a
few inches of additional accumulation compared to the rest of
the area. Snow ratios will be modest in northwest Ohio with a
skinny/elevated snow growth zone and surface temperatures
near or just above freezing. This will put a lid of sorts on
potential snow amounts but won't preclude low-end warning
criteria amounts from being reached given the duration and
potential for heavier rates in the morning.

The change to wrap-around snow from west to east Wednesday night
across the area won't lead to substantial additional accumulations
for most, as the low pressure will be weakening as energy transfers
to the east coast. However, some combination of upslope and minor
lake enhancement will begin kicking in from the Cleveland metro
points east across the lakeshore and primary snowbelt counties. This
should lead to 1-3" of new snow by sunrise Thursday...especially in
the higher terrain. The light additional snowfall and falling
temperatures may lead to slick spots developing on area roadways by
early Thursday. Lake effect/enhanced snow continues into Thursday
and will be discussed more below...the going plan is to issue
any needed headlines for this backside lake enhanced snow once
the current headlines are off the board.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
The cold front will move east of the region Thursday morning as the
low pressure system departs to the NE. Behind this front, a broad
and deep mid/upper trough will swing east across much of the central
and eastern CONUS Thursday and Thursday night bringing cold air
advection and broad cyclonic flow across the Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley. The combination of this cold air advection, synoptic scale
lift from the trough overhead, and abundant moisture wrapping around
the departing low will keep widespread light snow showers going
across the entire region Thursday, and more organized lake enhanced
snow showers across the primary snowbelt east of Cleveland through
NW PA. The synoptically driven snow showers will gradually wind down
Thursday night as mid/upper shortwave ridging briefly builds in, but
we will transition to pure lake-effect snow showers Thursday night
in the primary snowbelt of NE Ohio and NW PA as moisture and flow
across the lake continues.

Regarding the details, 850 mb temps will cool to -9 to -10 C
Thursday morning as the cold air deepens, further cooling to -10 to -
11 C Thursday evening and Thursday night behind a secondary
shortwave and associated surface trough. Expect periods of snow
showers across all areas through the day due to the wraparound
moisture and lift combined with moisture off of Lake Michigan in the
WNW flow pattern. This will put down an inch or less in most areas,
but could see up to 3 or 4 inches across the Central Highlands
region of Mid Ohio due to upsloping. Across the snowbelt areas of
eastern Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula, and Erie and Crawford
Counties, NW flow across the lake Thursday morning will back to
westerly by Thursday evening and eventually southwesterly late
Thursday night/Friday morning. This fetch combined with the deep
synoptic scale moisture and lift will bring lake enhanced/lake-
effect snow showers. Multiple bands Thursday morning will bring snow
showers to favored upslope areas of the inland snowbelt, including a
possible Lake Huron connection into NW PA bringing locally heavier
amounts, but as the flow backs more westerly in the afternoon and
evening, we could see a convergent band consolidating east of
Cleveland and gradually lifting into Erie County PA and western NY
by late Thursday night. NAM forecasted low-level wind fields hint at
this low-level convergence as the flow backs, as well as well
aligned westerly flow through the boundary layer (not much
directional shear), so we could squeeze out a few inches of snow.
Despite these factors, the negatives are the marginal
temps/instability which lead to inversion levels only 5-6 thousand
feet much of the day Thursday. This keeps much of the lift below the
DGZ which should limit the intensity of the snow. However, there is
a window Thursday evening into Thursday night where inversion levels
rise to over 7 thousand feet as the secondary shortwave crosses, so
I think that we will overcome these limitations a bit. When all is
said and done, we should see an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow
across the primary snowbelt areas east of Cleveland Thursday into
Thursday night with 4 to 7 inches in NW PA (highest in Erie County)
before the main band shifts toward western NY. This period will
likely require another Winter Weather Advisory.

By Friday, we will be in between systems as shortwave ridging slides
overhead and resultant SW flow deepens ahead of a potent northern
stream mid/upper shortwave moving into the northern Great Lakes. The
SW flow will push most of the remaining lake-effect snow showers
into the Buffalo area, but kept chance PoPs in NW PA through the
morning. The break will not last long as warm air advection and
isentropic ascent ahead of the aforementioned shortwave brings
chances for light snow back into the area from west to east by late
Friday afternoon. Temperatures will rise a few degrees Friday night
as warm air advection continues ahead of the trailing cold front,
and as the mid/upper shortwave trough axis and cold front cross the
region, the resultant lift will bring widespread rain and snow
showers. Most new snow amounts should be a half inch or less given
the marginal temps and the strongest forcing being north of the
region.

Highs Thursday will stay in the low 30s warming into the low/mid 30s
Friday. Lows Thursday night will dip into the low/mid 20s with upper
20s Friday night.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Active weather will continue through the extended as a large pool of
arctic air that will be building over the northern Plains and
western Great Lakes slowly bleeds southeastward (or at least tries
to) supporting an active storm track on the periphery. Snow showers
associated with the Friday night shortwave/clipper will gradually
exit Saturday morning as the cold front moves east, but warm air
advection and isentropic ascent will already be increasing Saturday
afternoon as the next mid/upper shortwave digs into the Plains. This
shortwave energy will result in surface cyclogenesis across the
lower Mississippi Valley Saturday night which will track toward the
Mid Atlantic coast Sunday into Sunday night, but guidance continues
to differ regarding how or if this feature might phase with a
northern stream trough crossing our region Sunday into Sunday night.
At this time, have chances for light snow increasing late Saturday
afternoon through Saturday night with likely PoPs Sunday, but the
snow should mix with rain Sunday as warm air advection increases
ahead of the trough axis and cold front. The coverage and amount of
precip will depend on any phasing that might occur. This is again
uncertain, but today's 12Z guidance is trending toward less
phased/lighter.

Gradual drying is expected Sunday night and Monday as cold surface
high pressure presses down from the northern Plains and northern
Great Lakes, but the next trough and associated cyclogenesis will
already be approaching from the Plains and Mississippi Valley by
Tuesday. This could be a very dynamic storm system for the middle of
next week as the main piece of arctic air described above finally
tries to drop southeast, but given huge model differences 7 to 8
days out, just added chance PoPs for snow showers by Tuesday.

Highs in the low/mid 30s Saturday will moderate into the low/upper

.AVIATION /06Z Wednesday THROUGH Sunday/...
Ceilings already coming down to MVFR across the area with the
approach pf a strong low pressure system from the southwest,
and will continue the descent into IFR as the onset of snow
begins generally after 08Z. Snow onset may be on the heavier
side, but give an hour of MVFR visibilities for the most part,
but periods of 1/2SM and LIFR ceilings are possible in banded
snowfall. Terminals east of TOL will change to a brief mix with
FZRA and then to RA for a period of time. Winds gust 20-25kts
out of the SE/E after 16Z Wednesday. As the surface low departs
to the northeast, winds come back around to a westerly direction
with more cold air and a return of snow showers to the
terminals into Wednesday night.

Outlook...Non-VFR continues into Wednesday night/Thursday in
snow showers. Non- VFR anticipated with a cold front and
precipitation Saturday.

.MARINE...
Winds and waves have calmed down this afternoon, and SE winds of 10-
15 knots are expected tonight as a strong low approaches. E winds
will increase to 15-20 knots Wednesday and could get to Small Craft
criteria west of the Islands, but held off at this point because the
best winds and waves may stay in the offshore zones. Small Craft
Advisories will definitely be needed Wednesday night into Thursday
as a cold front crosses the lake behind the departing low and brings
WNW winds of 15-30 knots generating 4 to 8 foot waves (highest
central and eastern basins). Winds become W and decrease to 15-20
knots Thursday afternoon, becoming SW at 10-15 knots Thursday night.
This will allow waves to diminish. SSW winds will then increase to
15-30 knots Friday becoming W Friday night as another low pressure
system and cold front crosses the Great Lakes, so additional Small
Craft Advisories are likely. WSW winds decrease to 10-15 knots
Saturday becoming SE Saturday night then W again by Sunday.
