.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over eastern Arkansas this morning races northeastward
to northern Ohio by late evening. This low forces an occluded
front eastward across the area Friday night into early Saturday
morning. High pressure returns to the region by Sunday
afternoon.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Radar returns are beginning to arrive across the southern
portion of the area this morning. Still might be another couple
of hours before returns begin reaching the ground given modest
low-level dry air. Will need to monitor wind trends this
afternoon and evening to see if any additional headlines are
needed.
Previous Discussion...
Low pressure over Arkansas early this morning races
northeastward to northern Ohio by late evening. Ahead of its
arrival warm advection and approaching jet energy significantly
increase the lift over the region. The rain is expected to
spread southwest to northeast across the region late morning
into the afternoon. While there could be some evaporative
cooling as the precipitation begins it looks like the slightly
later arrival allows temperatures to rise a couple degrees at
the lower levels. So other than a very brief period of maybe
some sleet or snow across extreme NE OH into NW PA we should see
rain. Rainfall may be locally heavy, especially near and west
of the I-75 corridor. This region may see rainfall amounts
around 1.5 inches. The remainder of the region may still see
around an inch of rainfall. We continue to like the area for the
flood watch with it mainly near and south of a line from Oregon
to Millersburg.
Now for the winter portion of this storm. We have a Winter Weather
Advisory for Lucas County. It looks like there could be a period of
moderate to heavy snow that develops to the northwest of the low
track this afternoon into the evening. While the heaviest swath
looks to be across Michigan we are going to have to monitor
locations to the north and northwest of Toledo for a heavier burst
of snow. Amounts of 1 to 3 inches may occur across the northwest
portions of the county. A couple things that will impact the
location and snowfall amounts follow:
1. The track of the 850/700 mb lows ends up too far to the
northwest. Heaviest amounts are typically near and to the northwest
of the low track. (NAM and Canadian 00Z models are the the farthest
to the north with the low tracks)
2. Low level flow is off of a relatively warm lake. Water
temperatures are in the upper 30's to around 40. This may help to
increase the dewpoint temperatures over the lowest couple thousand
feet to make it difficult to get snow to the surface.
(Dont have a great fell on this but something to monitor)
There may be a little bit of sleet/snow across the hills of extreme
NE OH into NW PA. Any snow accumulations should be under an inch.
Surface wind gusts are challenging today with the potential for
evaporative cooling at the onset of the precipitation giving us
enough of an inversion to keep the strongest winds gusts above the
surface. However any heavier pockets of rainfall through the
afternoon could bring stronger gusts down with it. We should also
erode the inversion a bit as we continue to warm advect through the
afternoon. In any event it is going to be a breezy to windy day with
gusts 40 to 45 mph possible. Temperatures should range from the
upper 30's to mid 40's. It may end be a touch warmer across the
southern CWA.
A touch cooler tonight in the wake of the occluded front so we may
see a change from rain to snow across NE OH into NW PA, especially
after midnight through mid morning Saturday. Snow accumulations are
possible from Geauga County into NW PA but amounts should be an inch
or less. Lows tonight mostly in the mid 30's. Clouds should be slow
to decrease on Saturday as we await the arrival of high pressure.
Highs Saturday likely limited by the cloud cover but still should
range from the upper 30's to mid 40's.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Any leftover flurries in NW PA will end quickly Saturday night as
the mid/upper trough axis lifts out allowing broad mid/upper ridging
to once again slide across the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes
as the very active Pacific jet continues to bring quasi-zonal flow
across the CONUS. Surface high pressure building into the Ohio
Valley beneath upper level confluence Saturday night and Sunday will
support dry conditions. Given the Pacific based air and already
rising heights aloft, lows will only fall into the low 30s Saturday
night, and highs Sunday will warm into the mid 40s to near 50.
A fast moving mid/upper shortwave moving through the active jet will
eject out of the northern Rockies Sunday night and reach the
northern Great Lakes by Monday night. Lee cyclogenesis will occur
over the High Plains Sunday night, with the associated surface low
crossing central Michigan Monday night. There are subtle differences
among the deterministic ECMWF, GFS, and Canadian regarding the
strength and track of the surface low, but these differences do not
really affect the final impacts. The main message is another warm
and windy system for Monday (although not as windy as the current
one) as the low tracks to our north and west. A few showers will
develop late Sunday night and Monday morning driven by warm/moist
advection and isentropic ascent as the warm front lifts northward,
but with the best dynamics passing north of the region, most of the
showers will hold off until the trailing cold front crosses the
region Monday evening into Monday night. Early indications are for a
40-50 knot low-level jet Monday morning into the afternoon and
tightening pressure gradient as the deepening surface low approaches
Michigan, so this will support breezy conditions, especially if we
can sufficiently clear out in the afternoon to improve mixing. At
this time, winds should stay below advisory criteria, but 25-35 knot
gusts are not out of the question. Showers along and ahead of the
cold front will end from west to east late Monday night as strong
surface high pressure pressing into the northern Plains advects in
drier air fairly quickly.
Highs Monday will warm into the upper 50s/low 60s in most areas, but
far northern and northeastern areas near the lake could stay in the
low 50s if the warm front does not clear the lakeshore, leading to
onshore flow. Definitely something to watch in the temperature
forecasts. Lows Sunday night will drop into the low/mid 30s with
generally mid/upper 30s Monday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The aforementioned large surface high building into the northern
Plains will remain largely stationary Tuesday through Thursday. This
high has arctic origins, but it will struggle to build further south
due to a continuation of a very fast quasi-zonal jet flooding the
country with Pacific based air. This will support dry, quiet
conditions Tuesday and Wednesday with any lingering showers in far
NE Ohio and NW PA exiting quickly Tuesday morning. There are
indications that by Thursday, a strong mid/upper trough will swing
out of the Rockies into the Plains and significantly deepen late in
the week, digging all the way down to the Gulf coast by Friday. This
could spawn a significant surface low somewhere near the Ohio Valley
late in the week that could finally drag the cold air into the area.
Details are very much in question this far out, but trended the
forecast toward gradually cooling temperatures mid to late week with
chances for snow showers or a rain/snow mix by late Wednesday night
and Thursday. If this storm system materializes, it could bring the
cold air in here for at least several days starting at the end of
the week. Stay tuned.

.AVIATION /12Z Friday THROUGH Tuesday/...
VFR conditions were located across most of the region. The
exception is around KERI with some light fog. This fog should
dissipate as easterly winds increase. Warm advection increases
ahead of an occluded front that moves across the region between
00Z SAT and 06Z SAT. Rainfall spreads from south to north from
mid morning through the afternoon. All locations should see rain
by mid afternoon. Ceilings lower quickly with the rainfall.
MVFR ceilings area expected to develop then lower to IFR levels
through the day. Easterly downsloping flow may delay the onset
of IFR conditions until late afternoon into the evening across
the east.
Snow looks possible near KTOL but current thinking is that it
only mixes with snow here with any accumulations to the north
and northwest of the airport.
Low pressure pulls away from the area tonight with IFR
conditions expected in its wake. A few locations, especially
across NE OH into NW PA could see some snow as the
precipitation ends.
Variable regional surface winds of 10 knots or less into the
predawn hours become predominantly east to southeast. Sustained
winds as strong as 15 to 20 knots and gusts up to 20 to 35
knots are forecast. Winds shift to the west and northwest late
this evening into the overnight hours.
Outlook...Non-VFR likely with flow off of Lake Erie, mainly
across NE OH into NW PA. Non-VFR possible on Monday into
Monday night in rain.

.MARINE...
Still looks to be a messy day on the lake as a strong low pressure
system moves into western Ohio this afternoon and across central and
eastern Lake Erie tonight bringing impressive easterly winds ahead
of it followed by continued gusty NW winds on the backside. A Gale
Warning remains in effect from 15Z today to 03Z Saturday west of
Vermilion and 18Z today to 03Z Saturday from Vermilion to Geneva-on-
the-Lake as easterly winds ramp up to 20-25 knots this morning and
30-35 knots this afternoon. The cold lake water will limit mixing
despite the impressive 925 mb easterly winds, so the 35 knot winds
will mostly be in the open water zones. Small Craft Advisories
continue from Avon Point to Ripley from 18Z today through Saturday
evening. The easterly winds in these nearshore areas should only top
out at 25-30 knots this afternoon given more of an offshore
component and the cold lake, but once the winds turn NW behind the
trailing cold front tonight, all of these areas could exceed 30
knots as better mixing occurs, gradually diminishing through
Saturday.
The easterly flow this afternoon and evening is the most problematic
because it will lead to water rises on the western basin. Current
water level forecasts and local research of past events suggests
that peak water levels should reach 78 to 80 inches above low water
datum late this afternoon and evening at Toledo Harbor. This is 8 to
10 inches above coastal flood criteria, so upgraded Lucas and Ottawa
Counties to a Lakeshore Flood Warning from 18Z today to 09Z
Saturday. Water levels will gradually start receding after about 03Z
as the flow turns N then NW behind the departing low and cold front.
Kept the Flood Watch for Erie County since typically, a more
northeasterly component and longer duration is needed to get high
water into Sandusky Bay. This area may just end up with a Marine
Weather Statement issued once confidence increases a bit more. Waves
will build to 8 to 11 feet this afternoon and evening in the
easterly flow and remain 6 to 8 feet in the NW flow tonight and
Saturday morning before diminishing.
Quieter conditions are expected Saturday night through the rest of
the weekend, but S to SE winds will increase Monday to 10-15 knots
becoming W to NW Monday night. NW winds of 10-20 knots should then
be common through mid week.
