.SYNOPSIS...
A strong low pressure system is tracking through the Great Lakes
region today. A strong cold front will sweep from west to east across
the region around midday. A surface trough will linger across the
area on Saturday before high pressure builds across the area on
Sunday and persists into next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Update...

Forecast remains valid per latest trends in observations and
model guidance. At 1:25 PM EDT, the surface cold front was
located in vicinity of a Conneaut to Mantua to Baltic line in
our CWA and was continuing to sweep E'ward. Still expect the
front to clear the rest of our CWA by about 3 PM this
afternoon. Periods of light to moderate rain are expected along
and especially ahead of the front as the pre-frontal warm
conveyor belt undergoes moist isentropic ascent aloft. Lingering
light rain should end within an hour after the surface cold
front's passage as a stabilizing surface high pressure ridge
builds from the south-central U.S. Please see discussion below
for further details.

Previous Discussion...

We are starting off this Friday morning on a rather mild note
with temperatures in the upper 40s over towards NW PA and low to
mid 50s across much of northern Ohio. It is also a wet and
breezy morning with scattered rain showers moving through the
region ahead of an advancing cold front that will sweep across
later this morning through midday. A strengthening low pressure
system is currently tracking northeastward through the central
Great Lakes region which is causing the increase in gusty
southerly winds this morning. Winds will quickly shift from the
west behind the front later today and remain gusty through out
the today. Our warmest temperatures for today will occur this
morning before the frontal passage. We could tack on a couple
more degrees from our current temperatures before we see the
temperatures slowly fall later today. We will likely see a 20+
temperature drop throughout the day and fall into the upper 30s
by late this afternoon or early evening. Rain showers will be
likely through mid to late morning. As the cold front pushes
through, rain chances will fade away with a drier afternoon in
the forecast. Average QPF expected with this system will be
around 0.25" to 0.50" across much of the region.

Cloudy skies will stick around through the afternoon. There could
be a few brief breaks in the clouds with a peek or two of
sunshine. A large and deep upper level trough will develop and
by centered over the Great Lakes later tonight into Saturday.
There will also be a large cyclonic flow over the Great Lakes
region tonight through Saturday with much colder air blowing in
across the unfrozen Great Lakes. We should be relatively quiet
with no precip expected tonight. A surface trough or secondary
cold front will swing southeastward across the Great Lakes on
Saturday. This secondary push of colder air in the low levels on
Saturday will help cheat a stronger Delta T and lake induced
instability to fire up a round of lake effect snow. The initial
flow will be a west-southwest oriented during the day Saturday
with lake effect snow showers hugging the lakeshore of NE OH and
NW PA, possibly impacting the Erie PA area. That flow will
eventually shift from a westerly or west-northwest flow by the
evening which will bring the LES further into the primary
snowbelt region of NE OH and NW PA. Temperatures will likely
not break the freezing mark on Saturday with readings in the
upper 20s to around 30 degrees. The breezy conditions will make
the wind chill feel more like the single digits and teens on
Saturday.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Saturday night will feature the best opportunity for accumulating
lake effect snow as lift, moisture, instability, and surface
temps become more favorable. There will likely be a primary band
along the lakeshore of far NE OH into NW PA with perhaps a secondary
band oriented somewhere east of the Cleveland metro area. Generally
thinking that overnight snow accumulations across the primary
snowbelt region will be 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts
possible across northeastern Erie County PA and within any organized
bands that manage to develop. Holding off on headlines for the time
being, but wouldn't be surprised if a Winter Weather Advisory was
hoisted for portions of the snowbelt in a future update. Also can't
rule out snow showers outside of the snowbelt given the upper-level
forcing and somewhat favorable fetch off of Lake Michigan.

Flow gradually becomes more northwesterly Sunday, allowing lake
effect snow bands to become less organized and dissipate as they
shift inland. Upper level forcing exits to the east by Sunday night
as high pressure begins to nose east into the local area and expect
dry weather by 00Z Monday. The high will anchor over the region
through the remainder of the short term period, resulting in dry
weather.

Temps gradually warm late this weekend into early next week. Highs
in the upper 20s and 30s Sunday will reach the low to mid 40s
Monday. Overnight lows will be in the 20s each night, but many spots
may drop into the teens Saturday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Dry weather continues through at least Wednesday afternoon as high
pressure persists over the CWA. The next system approaches from the
west Wednesday night and rain chances increase on Thursday as a warm
front lifts across the local area. Expect mild weather to continue
through the long term period with highs in the upper 40s to low to
mid 50s anticipated Tuesday through Thursday. Overnight lows
will remain above freezing for most of the area, although a few
spots in far NE OH and into NW PA may try to dip below 32 degrees
Tuesday night.

.AVIATION /18Z Friday THROUGH Wednesday/...
Cyclonic southwesterly to westerly flow aloft and embedded
disturbances affect our region through 18Z/Sat. At the surface,
net troughing lingers in our area. As of 17:30Z/Fri, one
eastward-moving cold front was located in vicinity of
KHZY/KPOV/KPHD. This front should exit our region by 19Z/Fri.
Scattered light to moderate rain showers persist along and ahead
of this front, while lingering and isolated rain showers behind
the front should end within one hour following the front's
passage. Visibility should vary between VFR and IFR in these
rain showers. Regional surface winds of about 10 to 20 knots,
gusting up to 20 to 30 knots, shift from southwesterly to
westerly following the front's passage.

Another surface cold front should sweep eastward across our
region between about 10Z/Sat and 17Z/Sat, but a very subtle
surface wind shift from west-southwesterly to westerly is
expected with this front as regional winds remain 10 to 20
knots and gust up to 20 to 30 knots. A distinct band of steady
to heavy snow should accompany this front and impact any one TAF
site for about one to two hours. Visibility as low as LIFR is
expected with this snow band. Outside this snow band, isolated
snow showers are possible after 00Z/Sat, but confidence in these
snow showers impacting any one TAF site is low. Lastly,
widespread low clouds with primarily VFR to MVFR ceilings are
expected through the TAF period.

Outlook...Scattered snow showers with non-VFR are likely
Saturday afternoon through Saturday night in northern OH and
northwest PA. Periods of steady to heavy lake-effect snow and
non-VFR are also expected generally east of Lake Erie, in the
snowbelt of northeast OH and northwest PA, late Saturday morning
through Sunday morning before tapering off Sunday afternoon.
Non-VFR are possible in scattered rain showers this Wednesday.

.MARINE...
Low pressure will move across the Great Lakes this morning, with a
cold front pushing across Lake Erie. Southwest winds 15
to 20 knots become more westerly and increase to 20 to 30 knots
behind the front this afternoon and a Small Craft Advisory remains
in effect through early Saturday morning.

Things become a bit more interesting Saturday as the low sweeps a
reinforcing cold front east across the lake and winds increase
further. Gales are possible in marine zones from Vermilion east and
confidence has increased enough to warrant a Gale Watch Saturday
morning through late Saturday night. There's still some uncertainty
in the duration of gales, as some guidance members have brief gales
and a few others have winds being closer to 30-32 knots. Regardless,
it won't exactly be a pleasant day to be on the lake. Will also need
to keep an eye on water levels in the western basin with the strong
west/southwest flow. A Low Water Advisory may be needed late
Saturday afternoon into Saturday night.

Winds gradually decrease below 30 knots by Sunday morning but winds
and waves may hug Small Craft Advisory criteria through as late as
Sunday night/early Monday morning, especially in the eastern basin.
On Monday and Tuesday, southwest winds decrease below 15 knots and
do not anticipate any marine headlines early next week.
