.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure is expected to increase its influence as it
reaches southward from Ontario late this afternoon into the
overnight. An area of low pressure over the Southern Plains this
afternoon should move into the central Great Lakes Friday
afternoon. An occluded front moves across the region Friday
evening into early Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Clouds are returning across the area from the north. Anticipate
the increase in cloudiness trend to continue through much of
the day.

Previous Discussion...Cloud cover should gradually decrease
from northwest to southeast through sunrise. Unfortunately it
looks like the cloud cover should increase by mid/late morning
with moisture that is trapped under an area of high pressure
that moves across Ontario through the day. The increased cloud
cover likely limits highs this afternoon across the north. Highs
range from around 40 near the lakeshore to the upper 40's to
near 50 across the south.

Cloud cover should persist into tonight as a warm front lifts
toward the region from the south. The increased warm advection
may be strong enough to get the onset of some light
precipitation into the southwestern CWA by sunrise Friday. The
precipitation type is going to be a challenge at the onset with
plenty of room for some evaporative cooling. So initial
thinking is that most areas start off with some light snow. Lows
tonight should range from the upper 20's across NW PA to the
lower 30's across the southwestern CWA. Temperatures across the
south may already be warming a bit before sunrise Friday.

Precipitation type is going to be a challenge on Friday with
dry low level air expected across the east. It looks like the
corners of the CWA will give the most grief on which
precipitation type occurs. NW OH, mainly just Lucas County, may
be in a favorable spot to see some snow/sleet accumulations. At
this point in time we are only thinking an inch or two of
accumulation on grassy areas to the north and northwest of
Toledo.

Across NE OH into NW PA it looks like the higher terrain will
have the best chances of seeing some mixed wintry precipitation.
While there could be a brief period of freezing rain or sleet
we believe evaporative cooling with the arrival of the heavier
precipitation should become mostly snow. Accumulations may be 1
to 2 inches on grassy areas and elevated surfaces. We will need
to monitor snowfall rates closely with a slim chance that a
winter weather advisory may be needed across interior NW PA
during the afternoon. Breezy conditions are expected but we
think the strongest winds will have a difficult time reaching
the surface through the afternoon. The reason for this is that a
low level inversion should set up with the rainfall and
evaporative cooling process. So gusts should not exceed 40 mph.
High temperatures should range from the upper 30's to maybe mid
40's. Locations that see snow likely dont see highs above the
mid 30's.

Another thing for us to monitor will be some locally heavier
rainfall. Locations near and south of a line from Oregon to
Canton could see amounts of 1.25 to 1.5 inches. This will cause
rises along area creeks and rivers. Not confident enough to go
with a flood watch at this time but something later shifts will
need to consider.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
The much-anticipated low pressure will be approaching western Lake
Erie (give or take) to start the period and will drift east through
Friday night while gradually weakening. Cyclonic flow continues into
Saturday before surface ridging tries nosing in through the
afternoon. Surface high pressure then generally remains in control
of the weather through Sunday night, though a shortwave and subtle
surface trough will move through the Great Lakes Saturday night and
could clip our area. A warm front takes shape and begins lifting in
late Sunday night ahead of low pressure developing over the Plains.

Precipitation will continue Friday night area-wide before gradually
exiting to the east. Heaviest rain will largely occur before the
Friday night period, and we'll monitor run-off from that for
flooding potential as it gets into our rivers. Most of us will
probably be rain Friday evening, though some wet snow or mixed
precip may continue into the evening in Northwest PA before
continued warm air advection changes them over to all rain. As the
low pulls away to the east later Friday night into Saturday morning
marginally cooler air gets pulled in which could cause some wet snow
to mix in with the lingering wrap-around showers. Showers will be
exiting to the east by Saturday morning, though a combination of
lingering synoptic moisture/cyclonic flow and a marginally cool
airmass moving over Lake Erie will cause showers to be rather
stubborn over Northeast OH and Northwest PA. Probably will see
precip fall as a mix of chilly rain or wet snow on Saturday.
Expecting little to no accumulation of snow from this wrap-around.
Lows Friday night generally get into the mid to upper 30s, though
some hillier locations could dip to near freezing. Only a few
degrees of rise on Saturday into the mid 30s to lower 40s.

A 60-70 knot low-level jet is progged to be lifting through extreme
Northeast OH and Northwest PA to start the period ahead of the low.
A low-level inversion will limit mixing, though downsloping along
the eastern lakeshore will need to be considered, especially if
there are any breaks in steadier precip when the strongest low-level
jet is overhead. West-northwest winds pick up later Friday night
into early Saturday in cold air advection on the backside of the
low. Gusts of 30-40 MPH are likely in this cold air advection area-
wide, with a few gusts to 45 MPH not ruled out. We may need a Wind
Advisory for some or all of the area from some point late Friday
afternoon into Friday night, but will not be issuing any
headlines with this cycle.

Generally quiet Saturday night through Sunday night, but hard to
ignore that every model has a shortwave and associated increase in
mid-level moisture moving through Saturday night. CMC and NAM have a
noticeable surface trough and spit out a bit of QPF (especially the
CMC). Added slight chances of rain/snow to most of the area for
Saturday night. Not expecting much but the NBM's 0-1% POPs were not
representative. Look for lows on either side of freezing. Should get
some sun for Sunday with highs in the 40s to near 50. Nice spread in
lows Sunday night, from the mid to upper 20s in Northwest PA to the
upper 30s along I-75, where increasing clouds and a gradient will
limit any radiational cooling.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The long term period will feature a trough digging over southeastern
Canada and the northeastern U.S., with a flat ridge centered near
the Mississippi Valley. The digging trough will cause a gradual
cooling trend through the period, though general upper level
confluence between the ridge to our west and trough to the east will
limit precip chances. Greatest potential for precip will be Monday
afternoon through early Tuesday as a low pressure and cold front
move through the region, though even this only warrants chance POPs
at the moment. Otherwise, increasingly chilly northwest flow may
allow for minor lake effect activity at times towards midweek in
Northeast OH and Northwest PA, but temperatures and moisture depth
don't appear to support any kind of notable snow amounts with any
lake effect. The period will start mild on Monday, with highs in the
50s in OH into the upper 40s in Northwest PA. More seasonable
conditions, with highs in the 30s/40s and lows in the 20s/30s build
in towards midweek.

.AVIATION /18Z Thursday THROUGH Tuesday/...
Mixed-bag of MVFR and VFR conditions across the area this
afternoon, associated with lower ceilings. The thickest clouds
remain across the northern half of the area with more of the
broken variety found further south. Expect the MVFR ceiling
trend to continue south through the rest of this afternoon
before a gradual scattering to VFR is expected later this
evening and overnight. Lower, MVFR ceilings could remain across
the northern half of the area through much of the TAF period.
Towards the end of the TAF period, rain and perhaps some mixed
snow will arrive from the south. Additional MVFR and IFR
restrictions from ceilings and vsbys will be needed at all TAF
sites in the next TAF issuance.

Winds are generally out of the west to northwest this afternoon,
around 10 knots. Winds will gradually shift towards the east
overnight and into Friday ahead of a strong low pressure system.
Winds will increase towards the end of the TAF period, 15 to 20
knots with gusts of 25 to 30 knots possible.

Outlook...Non-VFR likely in rain/snow Friday afternoon into Saturday.
Non-VFR may persist Saturday night in periods of snow. Non-VFR
is possible again in rain/snow on Monday.

.MARINE...
The main focus for the marine forecast remains strong low pressure
approaching from the southwest on Friday and moving near or over
Lake Erie Friday night. This low will shift east and quickly weaken
into Saturday. A strong pressure gradient will develop Friday
afternoon and early evening ahead of this low, sharply increasing
winds over the lake. A number of regional and hi-res models have a
brief period of gales over the western and central basin. For these
reasons have issued a Gale Watch from 18z Friday through 3z
Saturday. While confidence in gales is not 100% due to some
potential for the low to start filling a bit quicker, it is
sufficient to go with a Watch for now. More uncertainty farther
east, so did not include the eastern half of the lake in the Gale
Watch. Winds lull Friday evening as the low moves over or near Lake
Erie, before gusty northwest winds return later Friday night into
Saturday in cold air advection. Winds gradually slacken through the
day Saturday as low pressure continues to weaken and move away.
Nearshore zones that don't end up in a Gale Warning for Friday
afternoon/evening will need Small Craft Advisories as we get closer,
with Small Craft conditions likely developing Friday morning. Small
Craft Advisories will then need to continue into Saturday. If
sustained gale-force winds do pan out, water levels in the western
basin will rise and may flirt with lakeshore flood levels at Toledo
and Marblehead for a brief time Friday evening. Not nearly enough
confidence for that headline yet, but something to monitor.

No large systems bringing strong winds through the rest of the
forecast after the Friday-Saturday low pressure exits, though low
pressure and a cold front moving through the region Monday afternoon
through early Tuesday may increase onshore winds enough to build
waves to the point where we may need to think about a Small Craft
Advisory.
