.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will gradually exit east of the area through today.
An arctic cold front will dive south across the Great Lakes region
tonight, followed by a building arctic high for Friday into
Saturday. A weak clipper system will move east across the Upper
Great Lakes on Sunday, followed by high pressure for early next
week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
9:30 AM Update...

The forecast remains on track with no changes needed. Warm air
advection ahead of the arctic front will boost highs into the
mid 30s in most areas this afternoon as mostly sunny skies
continue. Snow showers and squalls associated with the front
still look to hold off until about 00Z when they will then
progress SE across the region.

Previous Discussion...

The main weather story for the short term period will be the frigid
temperatures that are expected to arrive late tonight through
Friday, associated with an arctic cold front. Sub-zero wind
chills are likely across the entire area on Friday, with the
coldest wind chills of -10 degrees F or less expected across NW
PA where a Wind Chill Advisory has been issued. Several inches
of a combination of both synoptic and lake effect snow is also
possible, though confidence remains too low for issuance of any
snow headlines at this point.

For much of today, the weather will be quiet with zero
precipitation chances and sunny skies expected to arrive later
this morning. High temperatures will return back above the
freezing mark today as warm air advection ushers in modest
southwesterly wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon.

For tonight into Friday, an arctic cold front will descend
south through the eastern Great Lakes region, with a 1040 mb
high expected to arrive across New England. Initially,
temperatures will be in the upper 20s to perhaps lower 30s late
this evening , dropping down into the low teens to perhaps
upper single digits at times Friday morning. High temperatures
on Friday will likely remain in the low teens. This, combined
with a modest north to northwest wind of 15 to 20 mph will
result in sub-zero wind chills on Friday and Friday night across
the entire area, with the coldest wind chills expected across
NW PA.

In addition to the cold, a brief burst of moderate to perhaps heavy
snow may occur along the front. The parameter space along the
arctic front remains favorable for snow squalls across far NE OH
into NW PA, especially between 7 PM Thu and 1 AM Fri. Strong
low-level frontogensis combined with low-level CAPE exceeding 50
J/kg will result in bursts of snow. This, combined with peak
forecast wind gusts upwards of 30 mph will result in reduced
visibilities and lead to a quick coating of snow across area
roadways.

Following the frontal passage, 850 mb temperatures plummet to
around -22 degrees C which will allow for lake effect snow to
begin falling across NE OH and NW PA with modest lift within a
cloudy DGZ. One limiting factor for the LES will be the lack of
mid- level moisture, especially above 7kft. Given primarily
northwesterly flow in the boundary layer, anticipating a multi-
banded LES event for the primary and secondary snowbelts. A
relatively ice- free Lake Huron could aid in delivering upstream
moisture to the ongoing LES bands, though confidence remains
low on how much additional moisture and QPF it may add. Given
the cold temperatures aloft, snow ratios will be around 20:1,
resulting in a very fluffy snow. Lake effect snow will persist
through Friday night as the cold air mass and low-level moisture
remain in place. Event snow totals from Thursday night through
Friday night generally range from 2 to 5 inches with locally
higher amounts of 6 inches possible across inland Erie County,
PA. Snow headlines may be needed at some point across NW PA to
capture the combination synoptic and lake effect snow, but
confidence remained too low for issuance at this time.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will build east across the area on Friday night and be
centered over Maryland by 12Z Saturday. It is common to see a
window of enhanced low level convergence downwind of Lake Erie ahead
of the building high which could lead to the set-up of a short
duration west to east band. Band placement is tough this far out and
moisture depth is also expected to decrease through this window but
have raised pops Friday evening until winds fully back to the
southwest and force any lingering lake effect north over Lake Erie.
This should occur towards midnight, bringing an end to accumulating
snow. Low temperatures will drop firmly into the single digits on
Friday night with a mid-cloud deck limiting temperatures from
dropping much colder. Wind chills are forecast to be sub-zero
overnight and a Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect for NW
Pennsylvania until 10 AM Saturday.

High pressure will quickly shift east of the area on Saturday as a
fast moving shortwave trough digs across the northern Plains and
approaches the Great Lakes Region. Southwest winds will ramp up on
Saturday with strong warm advection developing and pushing
temperatures back up above the 30 degree mark, except just below in
NW Pennsylvania. A window of mostly to partly sunny skies is even
expected between the low clouds lifting north before mid and high
cloud increases. Southwest winds of 15-25 mph will continue into
Saturday night with temperatures continuing to climb overnight. Low
pressure slides across the Upper Great Lakes on Sunday, pulling a
weak cold front in from the west. Most areas are likely to see highs
in the lower 40s before starting to cool late.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
There is good confidence in above normal temperatures during the
extended forecast. High pressure builds overhead on Monday with
shortwave ridging aloft. Warm advection ramps up heading into
Tuesday which is forecast to be the warmest day of the long term
with many sites reaching 50 degrees or better. Long range models
start to diverge beyond that point as the GFS wants to push a deeper
trough across the area while the Canadian/ECMWF favor a nearly zonal
flow across the Great Lakes with a closed upper level low developing
over the southwestern states. The ECMWF is then the most progressive
in bringing a strengthening low pressure system towards Lake
Michigan on Wednesday with rain reaching northern Ohio while the
other models are slower and weaker with this feature. Confidence is
low in determining precipitation chances by the middle of next week
and will monitor model trends going forward.

.AVIATION /12Z Thursday THROUGH Monday/...
VFR conditions across the TAF sites this morning with VFR to
persist through today. Deterioration to MVFR ceilings areawide
will occur by later this evening and overnight. Brief IFR vsby
drops from bursts of snow associated with an arctic cold front
are possible across the eastern TAF sites, including
CLE/CAK/YNG/ERI after 0Z. Have tried to time these IFR snow
bursts out in 2-hour increments across the aforementioned TAF
sites. Light snow showers may be possible elsewhere. Additional
non-VFR vsby mentions may be needed for lake effect snows behind
the arctic cold front.

South to southwest winds are generally 10 knots or less this
morning. Southwest winds will increase later this afternoon to
near 15 knots with gusts of 20 to 25 knots possible. Winds will
abruptly shift towards the northwest behind the arctic cold
front later this evening and overnight, with wind gusts of 25 to
30 knots possible.

Outlook...Periods of snow with non-VFR possible on Friday,
mainly across NE OH and NW PA. Non-VFR may return on Sunday in
scattered rain and/or snow showers.

.MARINE...
Southwest winds will ramp up today ahead of an arctic cold front
that will settle south across Lake Erie this evening. Winds ahead of
the front will ramp up to 30 knots on the central and eastern basin
and may even approach gale force for a brief window of time,
generally 2-4 hours towards the New York end of Lake Erie. Due to
the relatively short duration of near Gale Force winds, have decided
to hold off on issuing a Gale Warning but will need to keep an eye
on conditions. Winds shift to the northwest behind the front at 15-
30 knots and Small Craft Advisories are in effect east of the Lake
Erie Islands until late Friday afternoon/Friday night. In addition,
arctic air in the teens will arrive across Lake Erie and have issued
a Heavy Freezing Spray Warning for the central portion of Lake Erie
where winds and waves remain higher for longer into Friday. It is
not out of the question that this will need to be expanded to the
east end of Lake Erie but the fetch is shorter once winds shift to
the northwest. Ice growth on the lake will also occur with ice
expanding from the western basin into the central basin.

Strong high pressure builds over Lake Erie Friday night then shifts
east on Saturday as the next low pressure system moves across
Ontario towards James Bay. Southerly winds increase to 20-30 knots
by Saturday night. Although winds will primarily be offshore, will
need to consider if Small Craft Advisories are needed, especially
as winds veer to more westerly.
