.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain to the north while a coastal low
pressure system affects the area today through Sunday. Weak
high pressure will build in early to mid next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Current forecast looks on track as a baroclinic leaf is forming
near the South Carolina coast. Latest surface analysis revealed
a strong 1028 MB surface high pressure near the Great Lakes with
an impressive CAD over the Carolinas. The only minor tweak to
the forecast was to bring down dewpoints and temperatures
slightly given the widespread cloud cover.

The forecast then turns to tonight into Saturday as a coastal
low will form off the South Carolina coast.

Previous discussion...
Overnight composite analysis reveals a blocking pattern
becoming more prominent across the central CONUS with a loosely
closed upper low across the southeast states and Florida
Peninsula. A couple of weak pieces of short- wave energy are
rotating through the mean trough; one more prominent piece
working down through the Florida Panhandle while a second weaker
piece is rounding the tip of the Florida Peninsula. Meanwhile,
non-tropical surface low continues to gin up along some
semblance of a thermal boundary along the Gulf Stream with
associated showers rotating down through the outer waters of the
Carolinas and Georgia. Still not much happening precip-wise
inland...other than perhaps a few sprinkles rotating through.

No big changes in expectations with the coastal non-tropical
system. System will wobble off the coast through this afternoon
before the upper low helps drive the system toward the coast
tonight and inland on Saturday. Impacts from this system remain
the main forecast concern.

Per guidance and latest trends, the morning hours will remain
relatively precip-free, with perhaps a few light showers
creeping into the coastal areas. That will gradually change this
afternoon and especially tonight as the coastal low makes it's
move toward the coast with likely to categorical PoPs warranted
across the northern half of the CWA through tonight. Most if not
all instability will remain bottled off the coast. Thus we have
no mention of thunderstorms inland and there is no risk for
severe weather...other than some heavier rainfall that is.

Hazards and impacts: By far, the main impact from this system
will be gusty winds and all the associated headlines. 925 MB
winds are expected to ramp up through today, peaking tonight in
the 40 to 50 knot range with the strongest winds across the
northern part of the CWA and coastal waters. This suggests wind
gusts running 30 to 40 knots will become common across the
coastal waters and immediate coastal areas this afternoon
through tonight. A few storm force gusts are not out of the
question across the Charleston nearshore waters. But for now we
have opted to keep the gale warning going. However, with gusts
upward of 40+ mph along the coast, we have hoisted a Wind
Advisory for the coastal zones, valid for later this morning
through tonight. In addition, a High Risk for rip currents and
High Surf Advisory is also in effect.

Heavier rainfall is another potential hazard, although it does
appear that the highest amounts will set-up just north of this
CWA, while total rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches still look
reasonable across the SC counties. Not planning any hydro
related headlines at this time.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Broad low pressure in the mid-levels will prevail on Saturday. At
the surface high pressure will remain anchored to the north while a
low pressure system approaches the southeastern coastline. Saturday
afternoon the low pressure is forecast to move onshore somewhere in
the vicinity of the Carolinas. Initially, with the forecast area
positioned between the two features a pinched pressure gradient will
yield strong winds in the morning hours before easing into the
afternoon. These strong winds will support a Lake Wind Advisory
across Lake Moultrie through Saturday night. Numerous to widespread
showers are expected Saturday morning, with the greatest coverage
over the Charleston Tri-County. An additional .75-1" of rainfall is
currently forecast, although rain could be heavy at times. Heavy
rain may result in minor flooding in low-lying or poor drainage
areas. Rain chances taper off further south, with only isolated to
scattered coverage forecast over inland southeastern GA.
Temperatures Saturday will be well below normal as high pressure
attempts to build in at the surface in a CAD-like set up. Highs are
forecast to only reach into the low 60s inland with mid to upper 60s
along the coast. These temperatures could approach the record low
maximums at our climate sites (see Climate section for more
details). Overnight lows will be cooler than normal as well,
although no records appear in jeopardy. Temperatures overnight will
range from mid 50s inland to upper 50s to near 60 along the coast.

By Sunday morning the surface low pressure will have moved inland
and weakened. Aloft a broad low pressure will continue to dominate.
As drier air moves into the region on the backside of the low
pressure system rain chances will diminish significantly, with
isolated to scattered coverage Sunday reducing to no mentionable
POPs by Sunday night. Temperatures will again be below normal,
though not nearly as cool as Saturday. Temperatures across the
region will range from the mid to upper 70s. Overnight lows will be
in the mid 50s to near 60 along the coastline.

The broad low pressure aloft will eject off the east coast of the
CONUS on Monday, resulting in no large scale forcing in the vicinity
of the forecast area. High pressure will build in at the surface.
With no large scale forcing and building high pressure will result
in warming temperatures (upper 70s to low 80s) as well as limited
rain chances. There is a slight chance of showers and maybe a
thunderstorm Monday afternoon, likely associated with mesoscale
boundaries with the afternoon sea breeze.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High pressure will build in at the surface Monday night and will
prevail through the middle of the week. Aloft generally zonal flow
will dominate. Devoid of any larger scale forcing, shower/
thunderstorm activity will need to rely on mesoscale boundaries,
such as the afternoon sea breeze. There is slight chance of showers
and thunderstorms in the afternoon hours almost every day.
Temperatures are forecast to return to near normal Tuesday and
remain near normal through the rest of the week.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Surface low pressure continues to form and take shape off the
coast of South Carolina helping to further increase the winds at
the terminals. MVFR conditions and light right are currently
being observed at KCHS and KJZI with rain just off the coast of
KSAV. Tonight, the showers will move inland with visibilities
and ceilings rapidly lowering. IFR conditions will set in
starting tonight and then likely continue through the TAF
issuance. The other item of interest will be the winds. The
actual surface low will not move onshore until Saturday night,
but out ahead of the low the gradient will rapidly increase
along with the wind speeds (thanks to surface high pressure over
the Great Lakes region). Northeast winds will increase in speed
with gusts in the 30 to 35 kt range (esp towards KCHS and
KJZI), and slowly back from the north and then northwest by
Friday afternoon. Gusts will also be slow to come down as the
gradient remains tight.

Extended Aviation Outlook: MVFR or lower cigs are possible Saturday
night through Sunday as a low pressure system impacts the region.

.MARINE...
Coastal low pressure will further develop off the SC and GA
coasts today and approach the coast tonight. Gale force wind
gusts are already occurring in the Charleston nearshore waters
and will become common across the remaining waters as we go
through the day. There will be a window of storm force gusts
across the Charleston nearshore waters tonight. Although we feel
it will be short-lived. Thus we have refrained from hoisting a
Storm Warning at this time. But later shifts will need to
monitor conditions.

A tight pressure gradient will remain across the marine waters
Saturday morning as the region is positioned between a coastal low
pressure system and high pressure to the north. As the low pressure
moves inland in the vicinity of the NC/SC border and weakens on
Saturday conditions will begin to improve across the local waters.
As the winds shift around to the NW and diminish, all wind related
marine headlines should be down by Saturday afternoon, pending
possible Small Craft Advisories to address the lingering 5 to 7 ft
seas, which are forecast to persist through Sunday morning.

Conditions will continue to improve on Sunday, with winds generally
around 10 knots and seas 3 to 5 ft. These conditions should prevail
into the work week as well, as the region will be void of any large
scale forcing.

Rip Currents/High Surf: An increase in swell size/period will
yield a High Risk for rip currents today and Saturday.
Additionally, building surf will result in breakers at or above
5 ft and a High Surf Advisory has been hoisted for today through
Saturday morning.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strong northeasterly flow will drive elevated tide levels along the
southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia coast through
Saturday. Fortunately, astronomical tide levels are quite low and
even a 2 ft tidal departure would only barely bring high tide to
near the minor coastal flood threshold at Charleston. Minor coastal
flooding will be possible with the Friday night high tide and a
Coastal Flood Advisory may be needed.
