.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Update...
High pressure will build across the region overnight. Any
remaining clouds are diminishing, leaving clear/mostly clear
skies. Low temperatures across northern areas will generally
range from around 10 through the teens, with the colder
temperatures across northwest valley locations. Lows across
central areas and the interior Downeast region will range from
around 20 to the lower 20s with mid 20s along the Downeast
coast. Have updated to adjust for current conditions along with
expected overnight temperatures and clouds.
Previous Discussion...
Saturday will start off mostly sunny as the high moves eastward
across the area. Clouds will then increase as the high moves
away and a low pressure system approaches. However,
precipitation with this system will hold off until after sunset.
Expect fairly mid temperatures Saturday across the region, with
highs ranging from the upper 30s to the lower 40s. Winds will
be light on Saturday due to a weak pressure gradient.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Saturday night, a low pressure system will move northward along
the coast of Maine, bringing a band of precipitation that will
cross the area Saturday night and Sunday. Warm air will make its
way into the southern regions with the southeasterly flow ahead
of the main low on Saturday night, causing snow to mix with rain
Downeast. This wedge of warm air will bring surface temperatures
up quickly, so while there is a chance of some sleet mixing in
at the beginning, precip should change over pretty quickly to
rain and freezing rain is not expected. The warmer air will make
its way about halfway up the state, so precip should remain all
snow across the north. Snow ratios are slightly higher than in
the previous storm, and totals may reach warning level in the
north, so a winter storm watch for has been issued for the
northern zones. Across the Central Highlands an advisory may be
needed but will leave this up to the next shift to decide. A
brief period of gusty winds are possible ahead of the low, but
these will decrease on Sunday as the low moves eastward and the
winds become more northerly. Skies will clear on Monday with
weak ridging moving in overhead. In spite of the colder air
aloft, the sun angle will contribute to daytime heating and
Monday temperatures will be close to normal for this time of
year.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The long term forecast continues with a relatively cool
pattern. On Monday, a weak ridge will move over head and weather
will be calm with northerly flow maintaining the cooler air
mass over the forecast area. Tuesday, a low pressure system
approaches from the south, but this is currently forecast to
move eastward along the southern border of Maine. This should
not only keep northerly flow and the cooler airmass over our
region, but also limit the amount of precipitation as the
greatest dynamics with this system will be further south.
Therefore, am expecting a period of light snow Tuesday into
Wednesday, but not significant in terms of accumulation. A
similar pattern will repeat at the end of the week, with another
low passing to the south on Thursday. The surface low will be
more aligned with the upper level trough, but the upper level
support is not expected to develop the system further until it
moves offshore and out of the area of influence for our forecast
area. This will lead to a dry Thursday and Thursday night as an
upper level ridge approaches, bringing some subsidence. On
Friday, the weather becomes more uncertain with the approach of
the next surface low. The timing on this feature varies between
the forecast models, with some models bringing it in by Friday
afternoon, and others delaying the onset until Saturday.
Therefore, the forecast for Friday does have a chance of precip
for most of the area beginning in the afternoon, but confidence
remains low.

.AVIATION /04Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
NEAR TERM: Generally expect VFR conditions overnight through
most of Saturday. However, MVFR conditions could begin to
develop Downeast late Saturday with a chance of snow. Northwest
winds around 10 knots, becoming variable 5 to 10 knots
overnight. Variable winds 5 to 10 knots, becoming southeast
around 10 knots Saturday afternoon.
SHORT TERM:
Saturday night through Sunday...IFR/LIFR. Snow...mixed with
rain Downeast. Southeast/east winds 10 to 20 knots with gusts up
to around 25 knots Saturday night and Sunday morning, becoming
north/northwest around 10 knots Sunday.
Sunday night through Monday...IFR/LIFR Sunday evening, becoming
