Scattered light snow showers and flurries will continue this
afternoon, with lake enhanced snows east of Lake Ontario where an
additional couple inches may fall by early evening. Mainly quiet
weather tonight before a much more significant storm impacts the
area Wednesday into Thursday, This system will bring a variety of
winter weather to the region, including accumulating snow, sleet,
freezing rain, and rain.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Breezy conditions will continue to slowly subside through early this
evening. Otherwise, slowly waning synoptic moisture through the
afternoon in the wake of the shortwave passage combined 850 mb temps
around -9C to -10C will allow for some accumulating lake enhanced
snows to continue east of the Lake Ontario through end of day, while
the remainder of the area sees just some scattered light snow
showers and flurries. Light snow showers will sag south across
Oswego County, and along the lakeshore counties from Wayne west to
Orleans late this afternoon into this evening while slowly
weakening. This may bring a light coating to portions of these
areas. A couple more inches of snow will be possible across the Tug
Hill and western Dacks where a Winter Weather Advisory remains in
effect through early this evening.

Weak high pressure surface and aloft builds across the area from the
west later this evening into the overnight. Aside from a few
lingering light snow showers and flurries southeast of Lake Ontario
through the wee hours of the morning, weak warm advection along with
drier air and subsidence briefly moving into the area will provide
mainly dry weather. This break in the weather will be short-lived
however as moisture associated with a larger system approaches
southwestern NYS very late tonight. Lows tonight will range from the
teens across the North Country, with 20s elsewhere.

Our attention will then turn to a large storm system that will
generate widespread accumulating snow and mixed precipitation across
the region Wednesday into Thursday.

During the course of Wednesday, a sub 1000 mb surface low will chug
its way towards our region from the Ohio Valley. A deepening
southerly low ahead of the storm system will establish a pronounced
baroclinic zone over our region, one that with the help of a 50 knot
LLJ, will lead to very robust frontogenetic forcing. It will
eventually direct a distinct warm nose across our forecast area to
support a changeover from snow to a sleet mix then to rain for much
of the area as the day progresses.

The strong forcing associated with this scenario will lead to a
burst of moderately heavy snow over our western counties during the
midday and afternoon. As warmer air then moves north, the dendritic
growth zone will essentially be erased and the precipitation will
change to a brief period of sleet, then to just rain. This south to
north changeover will likely only support daytime snowfall that will
range from an inch or two over the Southern Tier, to as much as 4
inches near the south shore of Lake Ontario. It's worth noting that
the changeover to the sleety mix has been slowed north of the
Southern Tier, so forecast snowfall amounts could be a bit higher
than continuity. A long duration Winter Weather Advisory will likely
be issued in a future package today to cover this scenario for the
western counties.

Meanwhile east of Lake Ontario, the snow will hold off until about
lunchtime on Wednesday. Steady snow is then expected through the
afternoon for this area with 2 to 4 inch accumulations expected by
nightfall. Since the warmer air is not likely to push north of the
Tug Hill, snowfall amounts from the entire event should be more
significant, thus the Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for
Jefferson and Lewis counties.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Surface low pressure over western Lake Erie early Wednesday evening
will move northeast across western NY, Lake Ontario, and the North
Country through Wednesday night. A southerly low-level jet ahead of
the surface low will drive warmer and drier air northward into
western NY Wednesday evening. Initially, surface temperatures will
rise across western and north central NY with temperatures moving
above freezing across most of western NY and into low elevations of
north central NY Wednesday evening. Snow will continue to transition
from south to north across most of western NY, western Finger Lakes
and into Oswego county by late Wednesday evening. Colder air near
the surface low will likely keep precipitation mostly snow in
Niagara and Orleans county and Jefferson and Lewis counties. As
mentioned above, drier air will also move into western NY Wednesday
night. Higher liquid equivalent (QPF) amounts will be co-located
with the track of the surface low Wednesday night. Snowfall totals
of 1-2 inches expected across Niagara and Orleans county to 4 to 8
inches across northern Jefferson and Lewis counties. Elsewhere, less
than an inch to no accumulation is expected due to the changeover to
rain. Low temperatures will reach the upper 20s to 30s (very late)
Wednesday night. A Winter Storm Watch for Jefferson and
Lewis counties continues through Thursday.

Cold air will wrap around the surface low as it moves northeast and
into New England Thursday. Temperatures will fall through Thursday
with high temperatures met in the morning, upper 20s to low 30s
across far western NY and the North Country to the mid 30s across
the western Finger Lakes region. The shortwave trough driving this
system will become negatively tilted overhead Thursday morning.
Northwest flow with 850mb temperatures falling to about -10C will
produce lake and upslope enhancement Thursday. The entire region
will likely pick up an inch or two Thursday with higher amounts east
of the Lakes especially the higher terrain. Breezy Thursday with
wind gusts up to 35 mph and wind chills in the teens. The shortwave
trough retreats northward and a ridge builds across the Great Lakes
region. Weakening northwest flow will continue with lake effect snow
showers southeast of the Lakes through Thursday night. Accumulations
will be light into Friday. Chilly Thursday night with lows in the
teens to low 20s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Heading into Friday, brief low and surface level ridging will advect
in drier air across the area shifting winds from the northwest to
the southwest. Overall this will diminish and shift lingering lake
effect snows from southeast of the Lakes to northeast of the Lakes.

Then Friday night into Saturday, a mid-level shortwave trough will
support a cyclone to push across Ontario and drag its associated
cold front towards the area. The cold front will stall to the west
of the area Saturday, through keep the cold air across the area.
Overall, the shortwave trough's axis will pass across the area
Saturday and support lake enhanced snows east of both lakes.

Yet another shortwave trough sliding south across the Great Lakes
Sunday, will help spawn a surface low to form on the cold front
lying across the area and overall support chances for precipitation
through the end of the weekend and start of the new work week.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A mix of low VFR/MVFR CIGS are expected this afternoon into this
evening across the lower terrain, with solid MVFR CIGS found across
the higher terrain east of the Lakes. Lake enhanced snow will
continue east of Lake Ontario with some IFR VSBYs possible at times
south of KART, otherwise expect just some scattered light snow
showers and flurries elsewhere.

Some low level drier air advects into the area this evening, which
should provide a period of mainly low VFR CIGS across the area.
However, MVFR CIGS will likely remain across the higher terrain
(KJHW).

The next storm system moves into the area Wednesday, with snow
spreading from southwest to northeast through the morning hours
across areas south of Lake Ontario. Expect IFR VSBYs when snow
arrives, preceded by MVFR CIGS a few hours prior to onset of precip.
VFR CIGS will hold on across areas east of Lake Ontario (KART)
through 18Z Wednesday, however expect conditons to deteriorate there
through the afternoon as well.

south of Lake Ontario late.
Wednesday night...MVFR/IFR with snow North Country. Rain/sleet mix
changing back to snow overnight elsewhere.
Thursday into Friday...MVFR/IFR. Snow on Thursday, diminishing
to snow showers east/southeast of the Lakes by Friday.
Saturday...MVFR/IFR with snow showers east of the Lakes. VFR/MVFR
elsewhere with a chance of snow showers.
Sunday...MVFR/IFR with snow showers.

.MARINE...
Various Small Craft Advisories will continue through this evening
and tonight. Fresh to strong westerlies will continue to weaken
through early this evening, with lowering waves following suit
through the overnight.

High pressure crossing the lower Great Lakes tonight will then allow
winds to considerably weaken while shifting to a deep easterly flow
by daybreak Wednesday.

A large storm system over the lower Ohio Valley early Wednesday
morning will then advance to Lake Erie by Wednesday evening. The
easterly flow over the region will strengthen in the process,
especially on Lake Ontario. Given the offshore flow, do not
anticipate any headlines for this period.
