.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered over the Carolinas early today will gradually
give way to an approaching cold front...but not before providing the
region with mainly fair and warm weather into the early evening. A
cold front will then push through western and north central New York
tonight with numerous showers and a few gusty thunderstorms. Friday
will then feature notably cooler weather along with some scattered
showers and thunderstorms with the most active weather focused on
the Lake Ontario region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Satellite imagery showing abundant cloud cover across much of the
region this morning, with overcast skies across Western NY and the
eastern Lake Ontario region. These clouds will be persistent through
midday before breaking up this afternoon and allowing for some
partial sunshine. There could be enough instability to allow for a
stray shower or thunderstorm by late afternoon, with the most
prone areas for isolated convection will be found over the Finger
Lakes region and east of Lake Ontario.

The aforementioned strong shortwave will dig through the base a
rather sharp longwave trough that will make its way across the Lower
Great Lakes tonight. The attendant cold front will plow across our
region in the process while generating numerous showers and scattered
thunderstorms. A ribbon of deep moisture will accompany the frontal
passage...so some of the resulting convection could include briefly
heavy rain. While the diurnally induced instability will wane
during the course of the frontal passage...its possible that some
of the storms early on over the far western counties could allow
for some locally gusty winds. Categorical pops will remain in
place across the far western counties and east of Lake Ontario
with likely pops over the Genesee valley and Finger Lakes region.

Friday will be notably cooler...as the base of the longwave trough
will push across our forecast area. H85 temps will drop into the
single digits C (6-8C) along with a core of -14 to -16c air at H5.
While the former will only allow for afternoon max temps in the 60s
to lower 70s...the latter will provide steep enough lapse rates to
promote scattered showers and thunderstorms. The most widespread of
this convection will be focused east of the Lake Ontario region
where the deepest moisture will be found.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Upper level trough will exit the region Friday night, however one
last lobe of moisture will circulate across our region. This will
linger a few showers Friday night, especially east of Lake Ontario
which will lie closer to the cool pool aloft with the upper level
low, and also be under upslope flow. Clearing will arrive late
across WNY, and this clearing along with light winds will allow for
river valley fog formation. It will be a cool night, especially
across WNY where clearing will allow for lows in the mid 40s
interior Southern Tier, to low to mid 50s elsewhere.

On Saturday, the lingering upslope showers southeast and east of
Lake Ontario will slowly end through the day as the upper low
finally exits. It will be a cool start but with sunshine we'll warm
into the upper 60s to lower 70s. Dry weather, with river valley fog
for Saturday night with high pressure nearby.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A ridge of high pressure will amplify over the Central Plains this
period, with a trough deepening with northwest flow over our region,
especially late in the period. A moisture starved cool front will
drop across our region, later Monday and Monday night, with perhaps
a shower or two, especially east of Lake Ontario. There continues to
be model timing differences in the timing of the cold front passage,
with these models featuring an even larger amount of uncertainty for
Tuesday and Wednesday with the eastward bulge of hot air from the
Plains. With northwest flow aloft, the core of the heat will likely
remain just to our west, with fair weather and afternoon highs in
the 70s. That said, there is a possibility that this heat does
expand eastward Tuesday and Wednesday as some members of the GEFS
and ECMWF suggest.

.AVIATION /14Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
IFR to LIFR conditions in fog and stratus across parts of the
Southern Tier will give way to VFR weather after 15z. Otherwise...
VFR conditions will be found across the region today with a good
deal of VFR level cloudiness through midday. While an afternoon
thunderstorm cannot be ruled out for sites east of the Genesee
valley after 18z...convection should hold off until this
evening.

A cold front will cross the Lower Great Lakes tonight. This
feature will generate numerous showers and thunderstorms with the
strongest convection expected to be over the far western counties.
While VFR conditons should prevail...some of the heavier convection
could support brief MVFR conditions.

Outlook...

Friday...Gradual improvement to VFR with decreasing chances for
showers and thunderstorms from west to east.
Saturday through Monday...Mainly VFR weather.

.MARINE...
Gentle to moderate southerlies on Lake Erie through midday will become
southwesterly during the afternoon...while gentle southerlies on most
of Lake Ontario will become light from the southeast in the afternoon.
Waves will be negligible throughout the Lower Great Lakes.

Conditions will deteriorate tonight though...as a cold front will plow
across the region. This will result in numerous showers and possible
thunderstorms...some of which could include strong enough winds for
special marine warnings during the first part of the night. Otherwise
moderate southerlies ahead of the front in the evening will become
fresh to strong westerlies in the wake of the system towards daybreak.
The strong cold advection in the wake of the front will promote
favorable conditions for waterspouts...especially on Lake Erie and the
western half of Lake Ontario. All of this will likely require small
craft advisories that would be issued in a later forecast package.

Fresh to strong westerlies will be found throughout the region on
Friday...as a moderately strong low level jet within cold advection and
within a fairly tight sfc pressure gradient will be in place. This will
produce solid small craft advisories across both Lakes Erie and
Ontario. The risk for waterspouts will persist throughout the region.

High pressure will gradually build across the Lower Great Lakes later
Friday night and Saturday. This will allow winds and waves to slowly
subside as we head into the weekend...but you can likely count on SCA's
remaining in place for at least a portion of this period.
