.SYNOPSIS...
A deep upper level low will bring dramatically colder and unsettled
weather today through Tuesday night, with occasional showers and
lake effect rain. The rain will mix with wet snow at times late
tonight through Tuesday night, with minor slushy accumulations
possible across higher terrain. Temperatures will be over 40 degrees
colder by Tuesday compared to last weekend. High pressure will build
into the eastern Great Lakes Wednesday with a return to dry weather
and the start of a warming trend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The surface cold front has moved east of the eastern Lake Ontario
region early this morning. Most of the rain is now behind the cold
front as the deepening mid level low upstream forces the frontal
boundary to become anabatic in nature. The rain associated with the
cold front will end by early to mid morning across the Genesee
Valley and western Finger Lakes, with back edge of the rain then
progressing into the eastern Lake Ontario region by early afternoon.
Behind the first area of rain, a notable mid level dry slot over
Western NY early this morning will move east, providing a period of
dry weather and even a few breaks of sunshine.
The deep mid level low over central lower Michigan today will move
to near Georgian Bay tonight, then into southern Quebec Tuesday.
Deep moisture and large scale ascent from height falls and DPVA will
arrive in Western NY this afternoon, then move into the eastern Lake
Ontario region this evening. An extended period of moist cyclonic
flow and cold air aloft will then support frequent showers later
today through Tuesday. The airmass will grow cold enough to support
lake enhancement later tonight through Tuesday, and high-res
guidance suggests an organized band of lake effect will develop
northeast of Lake Erie later tonight.
Lake effect will be the favored forcing later tonight through
Tuesday morning, then the role of lake and land will flip by Tuesday
afternoon, with more stable air over and east of the lakes and
greater instability over land, forcing the majority of the showers
to become land based.
Showers will become widespread by mid to late afternoon today across
Western NY, with occasional showers then continuing tonight through
Tuesday morning with the best coverage east/northeast of Lake Erie
and Lake Ontario with lake enhancement. Precipitation will be all
rain through this evening. Cold advection will then cool the column
and surface temperatures enough to allow wet snow to mix in late
tonight, with a change to all snow across higher terrain. The area
from Buffalo to Batavia may mix with, or change to wet snow for a
few hours late tonight and early Tuesday morning if an organized
band of lake effect develops and supports evaporative cooling and
cooling from melting in the boundary layer. The higher terrain east
of Lake Erie may see a coating to an inch of slush on the grass.
Midday through Tuesday afternoon lake effect will transition into
scattered to numerous showers over the land. Precipitation type may
still mix with wet snow or graupel at times, especially across
higher terrain and in heavier showers.
Highs Tuesday will only be in the low to mid 40s for lower
elevations and mid to upper 30s for higher terrain, over 40 degrees
colder than high temperatures Sunday. Winds will gust to 30+ mph,
with wind chills in the 20s all day.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
The axis of the mid-level trough will slowly begin to shift east of
the region Tuesday night. A shortwave dropping through the northwest
flow aloft will likely keep rain and snow showers going through the
first half of the night. After that...falling equilibrium levels and
warm advection processes will start to diminish returns off Lake
Erie. Off lake Ontario...with H850T's still in the neighborhood of
-8C/-9C we will likely see rain and snow showers continue into early
Wednesday morning. In terms of snowfall accumulations we might see
up to an inch in the most persistent snow shower activity. Little to
no accumulations anticipated at lower elevations.
Wednesday...the mid-level warm front will continue to slowly work
into the the Lower lakes. At this point all shower activity should
be in the process of wrapping up by mid to late morning.
Otherwise...weak surface ridging will be in the process of building
in over the region. This will bring mainly dry weather for much of
the region. We will also see a modest rebound in temperatures
Wednesday but not even close to what we saw last week. Highs will
peak in to the 40s to mid 50s south of Lake Ontario.
The picture becomes a bit murky from Wednesday night through the
end of this period. The main culprit is the mid-level warm front
extending east and southeast through the Lower Lakes and a potential
shortwave traveling along this boundary. For now...have increased
POPS with chances for showers through at least Thursday morning.
After that...we might see a bit of a break behind the shortwave by
Thursday afternoon which will then last into Friday ahead of a cold
front.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A deepening trough will move into the Upper Great Lakes region
Friday which will drive a cold front into the region over the
weekend. This will bring unsettled weather with cooler and wet
weather Saturday into early next week.

.AVIATION /08Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A strong cold front has moved east of the area early this morning.
Most of the rain is now along and behind the cold front, with a 4-6
hour period of showers at any one location. The showers across
Western NY have ended, with rain ending around or shortly after 12Z
Monday across the Genesee Valley (KROC) and by around 18Z east of
Lake Ontario (KART). Areas of MVFR CIGS will continue in the rain
behind the front, with some of the heavier showers also producing
brief VSBY reductions.
A dry slot will move into Western NY this morning, then to the
eastern Lake Ontario region this afternoon with a break in the rain
and mainly VFR conditions. An approaching strong upper level low
over the central Great Lakes will bring a return to showers later
this afternoon across Western NY, and by early evening east of Lake
Ontario as deep wrap around moisture arrives. Showers will become
lake enhanced later tonight, and also mix with or change to wet snow
at times as colder air arrives. Expect widespread MVFR with local
IFR overnight.

Tuesday through Tuesday night...MVFR/IFR with rain and snow showers.
Wednesday...Mainly VFR.
Thursday and Friday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of showers.

Southwest winds will increase again later this afternoon on Lake

most of Wednesday on Lake Ontario as low pressure slowly passes just
north of the lakes in an unseasonably cool airmass. Winds will
become light Wednesday night as high pressure builds over the
