.SYNOPSIS...
Strengthening low pressure will move through the Great Lakes
through tonight, bringing a few rounds of rain, possibly
starting as a wintry mix, mainly freezing rain, early this
morning over the higher terrain. Localized high winds out of the
southeast are expected along the Thruway south of Buffalo
daybreak today through early afternoon. Then, another round of
high winds, this time out of the southwest, are expected along
the Lake Erie shoreline and across the Niagara Frontier tonight.
Dry weather should return Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A deepening upper level trough that produced severe weather over the
deep south on Friday will lift across the Great Lakes today, and
into Southeast Ontario Province tonight. Associated sfc low crosses
Michigan today. A wing of warm air advection will accompany this
with precipitation entering WNY this morning and moving ENE across
the region into the early afternoon. Dry mid-level air in wake of
this first round of precip will result in precipitation changing to
scattered showers late this morning into the afternoon south to
north. Forecast soundings indicate snow/sleet to start then precip
changing to rain as ptype. Concern is that temps across the higher
terrain Southern Tier into the Finger Lakes will lag that switch and
there could be a few hundredths of freezing rain. Since this will be
brief, likely will handle with SPS instead of winter weather
advisory. Main area that sees maybe a couple inches of accumulating
snow this morning will be higher terrain east of Lake Ontario before
snow and mixed precip switches to rain in the afternoon. Temps in
the afternoon as the rain showers scatter out will pop into the mid
50s western NY to Genesee Valley and even into the lower 40s at low
elevations east of Lake Ontario, though higher terrain will only
reach mid 30s.

Of greater concern will be downslope winds which develop near the
tail end of the widespread precipitation. Although localized near
the Thruway well south of Buffalo, southeast winds will have the
potential to gust to 50-60 mph with typical hazards to high profile
vehicles along the section of the Thruway from Ripley to about
Angola. There may be some downslope southeast winds in the 40-50 mph
range further inland as well even across the higher terrain toward
the Finger Lakes, though these warm air advection type winds can be
overdone at times.

But, the MAIN EVENT will occur as the low will continue to move
northeast into southeast Ontario late this afternoon into this
evening. A cold front will trail the low and move across the region
with cold air advection that follows easily mixing down stronger
winds aloft. Expect post frontal gusts out of the southwest to reach
60 mph. These will be more widespread compared to the downslope
winds earlier in the day, and affect areas along the Lake Erie
shoreline across much of western NY and over the Niagara Frontier.
Though strongest winds are most likely shoreline of Chautauqua and
southern Erie and over much of N. Erie and Niagara, latest guidance
and HREF/NBM ensemble probabilties suggests at least marginal
warning criteria gusts could also occur farther inland toward Monroe
county. Have expanded the High Wind Warning into Genesee, Monroe and
Wyoming counties. The duration of the highest winds should last 3-6
hours before tapering off late tonight.

In terms of precipitation tonight, there is enough instability (up
to 300J/kg of CAPE) working north ahead of the front to justify at
least a small mention of thunder working eastward from western NY to
the Finger Lakes. SPC has much of western NY in a marginal risk for
severe which given the shear in the area is reasonable. Overall
rainfall associated with the cold front as it moves through should
be fairly short-lived. Rain showers will quickly to change to snow
as the cold air charges across the region from the west. Main snow
amounts of consequence tonight will be late east of Lake Ontario,
especially across the higher terrain as lows settle into the 30s all
areas late.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The stronger gusty winds from Saturday night will start to weaken as
the pressure gradient over the forecast area relaxes through the
morning hours on Sunday. This will occur as the surface low to our
northwest both slowly weakens and tracks northeast, away from the
region. Increased ridging, along with an area of elongated high
pressure stretching from Ontario will promote fair quiet conditions
from Sunday morning through Monday morning for most of the area. The
exception being some lingering showers across the eastern Lake
Ontario area through the early portion of Sunday afternoon as the
western fringe of the trough exits. Showers that do linger east of
Lake Ontario will be in the form of snow, especially over the higher
terrain, with mixing or changeover to rain showers for lower
elevations and as daytime heating raises air temperatures. High
temperatures for Sunday will be in the mid 30s to low 40s for the
higher terrain, and in the low 40s to near 50 for the lower
elevations. Any precipitation that does fall should be light, with
up to around an additional inch of snow for the higher terrain east
of Lake Ontario. Low temperatures on Sunday night will be in the mid
20s to low 30s for most of the area, with low 20s possible over the
higher terrain east of Lake Ontario.

Two shortwave troughs will trek across the eastern CONUS Sunday
night, the first initially located in the vicinity of lower Lake
Michigan and the second over the south-central Plains. As these
features propagate eastward, they will begin to phase over the Ohio
Valley, forming a broad surface low which will organize as it moves
towards and away from the East Coast Monday. The northern edge of
the precipitation shield associated with this system will nudge into
the Lower Lakes, bringing a round of light precip to areas south of
Lake Ontario Monday afternoon into Monday night. Surface temps in
the 40s during the day will cause any precip to fall as plain rain,
with cooling temperatures after sunset allowing for a taper to light
snow before briefly drying out. While it looks as though areas
closer to the NY/PA border have the best chances of seeing wet
weather, keeping things fairly broad-brushed through Monday night in
terms of precipitation chances as there is still a good deal of
uncertainty in the evolution of this pattern among the latest
guidance. On top of timing discrepancies and differences in how far
north the edge of the precip shield makes it, some deterministic
members (00z CMCreg/GFS) also have the shortwave south of Lake
Michigan Sunday night bringing an initial round of showers to
western NY Monday morning before the broader area of rain lifts from
the south in the afternoon/evening. Otherwise...lows Monday night
will again be in the upper 20s and low 30s for most spots, with
mid/low 20s across the North Country.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A broad upper level low over northern Canada Tuesday morning will
spread a trough southward across the north-central portions of the
continental United States and into the Great Lakes region. This
trough will continue to dive and dig into the Great Lakes region
Tuesday before crossing overhead and then towards the east coast
Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Translating the upper air pattern down to the surface, due to
cyclogenesis from the digging trough aloft, a weak surface low will
develop over the mid Mississippi River valley before passing east
across the Ohio Valley and then off the east coast. Still
differences in models with regard to extent of rain/snow with this
system, especially how far north it extends into the northeast.
Result is a chance (20-50%) of precipitation at this point Tuesday
through Tuesday night. Beyond this another weaker trough and surface
reflection works across the lower Great Lakes and northeast midweek
but again low chances for any precipitation.

Looking further ahead into the close of the work week and next
weekend, the next trough aloft will dig deep south, supporting
cyclogenesis and nurture a surface low to mature and deepen as it
traverses northeast across the Mississippi Valley and then Ohio
Valley towards the region. Despite model guidance packages
continuing to differ with timing of the amplification, expect
widespread precipitation to arrive late in the week and last into
the weekend.

Overall the general troughing pattern aloft will result in temps
averaging slightly below normal Monday through Thursday. High temps
will mainly be in the low to mid 40s. Low temps will be in the mid
20s to lower 30s, though a bit cooler east of Lake Ontario.
Amplification of the upper air pattern late in the week will support
near normal temperatures.

.AVIATION /08Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
VFR/mid level decks will quickly thicken and lower from southwest to
northeast across areas south of Lake Ontario through daybreak.
Conditions will continue to deteriorate into this morning with MVFR
CIGS moving into the western Southern Tier (KJHW) and low VFR for
KIAG/KBUF as a shield of precipitation begins to overspread the
region from the southwest. The leading edge of the precipitation may
briefly start out as wet snow or some mixed precip late tonight
through daybreak this morning across areas west of the Genesee
Valley.

For the rest of the day today, mainly rain will continue to
overspread the area, with again the leading edge possibly starting
out as some wet snow or a wintry mix across the Genesee
Valley/Finger Lakes from mid to late morning before changing to all
rain for these areas. Areas east of Lake Ontario (KART) will see wet
snow/sleet around mid morning at the onset, possibly lasting through
early and mid afternoon before changing to all rain here as well.
This may produce a brief period of IFR/MVFR VSBY in any wet snow,
especially east of Lake Ontario. Otherwise, VSBYS will be mainly
VFR/MVFR in light rain/mist, with brief periods of IFR possible in
areas of moderate rain/fog.

CIGS will be mainly MVFR for the bulk of Saturday (not til midday at
KART), with areas of IFR CIGS possible across higher terrain. Gusty
south winds will develop during the morning hours, with the
strongest winds localized near the Lake Erie shore west of the
Chautauqua Ridge, with 40 to 50 knot gusts possible. Expect gusts of
30 to 40 knots across the remainder of the area. Winds shift to the
southwest late in the day/early evening as a cold front plows across
the area. There is also a risk for isolated thunderstorms over far
western NY as the front approaches.

Tonight, expect MVFR CIGS and a mix of rain and snow showers that
may cause some intermittent MVFR/IFR VSBYS in any heavier snow
shower activity. There could also be isolated thunder early in the
evening, shifting toward the Finger Lakes ahead of the front.

The main impact at the TAF sites will be the strong gusty winds,
especially across far western NY, with southwest winds gusting to
around 50 knots, strongest 02z-08z, for KBUF and KIAG and briefly at
ROC centered around 06z. Expect gusts of 30 to 40 knots elsewhere.
Steadier precip tapers off from west to east during the second half
of the night, except east of Lake Ontario where snow showers will
continue through the start of Sunday.

due to lingering mixed rain/snow showers.
Monday...Mainly VFR, late day MVFR especially south of Lake Ontario
with precip tracking into the are.

Strong low pressure will cross lower Michigan today, then across
Lake Huron over Ontario and Quebec tonight through early Sunday.
East to southeast winds will increase in advance of this system, and
may briefly approach gale force Saturday. A longer period of

early Sunday following the passage of the strong cold front. Winds
will slowly taper off on Sunday.
