.SYNOPSIS...
Dry weather will prevail through sunset. Low pressure will cross the
Great Lakes tonight and Friday with rain showers, along with
providing a warmer end to the work week. A strong cold front will
cross the area late Friday and Friday night. This will be followed
by a blustery and sharply colder weekend with the likelihood for
accumulating lake effect snow east and northeast of Lake Erie and
Lake Ontario.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A mid level ridge axis will cross overhead this evening, while
surface high pressure slides off the Carolina coast providing dry
weather through early evening. Southwest flow behind the departing
high will send in much milder air, with temperatures climbing above
normal with highs in the mid 40s to lower 50s and upper 30s to lower
40s east of Lake Ontario.
Widespread rain showers will develop ahead of a strong cold front
mid to late this evening across western NY on the leading edge of a
50-60 knot low level jet, then move slowly east across the region
through the overnight, reaching the eastern Lake Ontario region
toward late tonight into early Friday morning. Strong warm air
advection will cause temps to rise through the overnight hours with
early lows mainly in the 30s.
Rain showers will continue through much of Friday ahead of the slow
moving front attached to low pressure moving northeast into southern
Ontario. Rainfall amounts through Friday look to be between a half
to three quarters of an inch across western NY and the Tug Hill,
with a quarter to half inch elsewhere. Expect southwesterly winds to
strengthen on Friday as well with gust possibly approaching 40 knots
northeast of Lake Erie. Otherwise, a warm finish to the work week
with highs ranging through the 40s and lower 50s.
Cold front crosses the region late Friday and Friday evening with
winds coming down some, however remaining quite gusty. The steadier
precipitation will taper off by Friday evening. Much colder air
pours into the region Friday night with any leftover rain showers
quickly mixing with and changing to snow by late evening/early
overnight. Colder air then deepens with some lake effect snow
showers developing east/northeast of the lakes by late Friday night
with some light accums possible. Lows will drop back into the 20s
area wide.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
...Lake Effect Snow Headlines East of Both Lakes...
An anomalously deep (-3 STD / 5-10 yr RI) longwave trough centered
over the Upper Great Lakes at the start of this period will rotate
northeastward across Quebec as we move through Saturday night and
Sunday. This feature...more typical of mid winter...will drive a
very cold airmass (H85 minus teens C) across the wide open and
unusually 'warm' (+3 C) waters of Lakes Erie and Ontario. This will
easily establish moderately unstable conditions over the lakes which
will lead to a definite...if not pronounced...lake response. There
is very high confidence that accumulating snows will be found east
of both lakes with the late Saturday to Sunday morning time frame
being the main time period of concern. While it can be difficult for
late season snows to accumulate during the daytime on non-snow
covered surfaces (ie. roadways)...this event will largely occur at
night or during twilight hours.
Given this diurnal timing and relatively high late season cap in the
vcnty of 10kft...a winter storm watch for lake effect snow will be
issued for areas east of both Lakes Erie and Ontario. This watch
will run from late Saturday through Sunday morning. While this will
be a somewhat unusual late season lake effect event...the occurrence
over the weekend and relative short nature of the organized lake
snow will likely translate into low end warning criteria impacts.
This is not going to be a crippling event. Some details...
As cold air deepens across our region Saturday morning...lake snows
will initially begin on a 250 flow across southern Erie county and
also in the vcnty or just south of Watertown. The disorganized
activity will drift a little north by midday before pushing south on
a 260 flow in the afternoon. While there will be some bursts of snow
within the cellular lake effect...any such bursts should be short
lived due to the strength of the low level flow. Daytime snowfall
will range from a half inch in most areas est of the lakes to an
inch or two over southern Erie county.
Saturday night...the cold air will continue to deepen while the
inhibiting nature of the diurnal mixing will be removed from the
equation. This will allow the disorganized lake snows to congeal
into well defined plumes that will be focused on parts of Chautauqua
county across southern Erie county into Wyoming county. Upwards of 8
inches of snow could fall in the heart of this plume overnight with
snowfall rates of an inch...to at most two inches per hour. Off Lake
Ontario...the band should be fairly steady between Watertown and the
Tug Hill with similar amounts and rates of those off Lk Erie.
As the flow veers more to the northwest late Saturday night and
Sunday...the cap will lower and the deeper synoptic moisture will be
peeled away. Also...once we get past 14z or so...the increasing
strength of the mid March sun will help to poke holes in the
bands...ie make the activity more cellular. This will hold
additional Sunday accumulations to 1 to 3 inches...with slightly
higher amounts possible near the Tug. The lake snows will then
completely die off Sunday night with only minimal snow coverings
possible.
Elsewhere this weekend...the key component will be the gusty winds.
A 40-45kt low level jet within the cold advection on Saturday will
make it quite unpleasant to be outdoors. Winds could gust to 40 mph
or better across the IAG Frontier during the middy and afternoon
with gusts well into the 30s most elsewhere. Given that max temps
will generally be in the low to mid 30s...there will be a fairly
significant wind chill with readings mainly in the teens and low 20s
for those St Patrick's Day weekend outdoor activities.
Gusty winds and a cold airmass will persist through Sunday...
although there will be a better chance for some times of sunshine.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A flat mid-level ridge will build from the Great Lakes to the
Northeast Monday through Tuesday, with expansive surface high
pressure stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to New England. On
Monday, 850H temps initially around -8C and long fetch over the lake
may be enough to spur the development of a few additional lake
effect snow showers east of Lake Ontario. Conditions will quickly
become unfavorable for accumulating snow through the day, with the
combination of increasing subsidence and drier air from the high,
and the steep March sun angle becoming increasingly disruptive
through the day. Dry weather then expected areawide through at least
Monday night.
Uncertainty in the evolution of the synoptic pattern grows moving
into Tuesday as there is a notable lack of consistency among the
guidance packages. A weak cold front is progged to drop southeast
through the region as a shortwave trough pivots from Ontario to
Quebec provinces, with a thin ribbon of moisture producing a few
light rain or snow showers. There may also be some minor lake
enhancement east of Lake Ontario with a brief westerly flow as 850H
temps dip low enough to produce some additional instability. There
are large differences among latest guidance in the timing of this
FROPA, with the 12z GFS bringing the front through on Tuesday, and
the CMCNH almost a full 24 hours later on Wednesday. The 00z ECMWF
favors this later timing, but is notably drier overall. Given the
high uncertainty, have added some broad-brushed sChc PoPs (15-20)
for this timeframe, but this is very much subject to change as it is
looking unlikely that the area sees precip on BOTH Tuesday and
Wednesday.
Moving into Wednesday night, mid-level ridging will shift eastward
as a large trough moves from the central Plains to the Great Lakes.
This will serve to lift a warm front across the Ohio Valley, with a
LLJ advecting deep moisture and overspreading showers across the
region through Thursday. Precip type at this range looks to be more
of the frozen variety or a wintry mix to start, then changing to all
rain on Thursday.
Otherwise, as surface high moves east of the region through midweek,
a light southerly return flow will initiate a warming trend.
Temperatures Monday and Monday night will average near normal, then
climbing to above normal for Tuesday and the rest of the week.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Expect VFR flight conditions through this evening with some SCT/BKN
decks around 6K feet. Mid and high clouds will also be found
overhead.
Clouds will thicken and lower for tonight and Friday with MVFR CIGS
developing south of Lake Ontario overnight and east of Lake Ontario
Friday morning. IFR CIGS will develop Friday morning across the
higher terrain. MVFR/IFR CIGS will then last through Friday.
Rain showers arrive into western New York mid to late evening ahead
of low pressure and a cold front. Rain showers will slowly move east
through the overnight, arriving in the eastern Lake Ontario region
by early Friday morning. Expect widespread rain showers to continue
through the end of the TAF period ahead of the approaching front.
Otherwise, There will be a risk of LLWS, especially for western New
York for the second half of tonight into early Friday morning with
the arrival of a 50-60 knot low level jet.
Outlook...
Friday afternoon...MVFR/IFR with widespread rain showers. Southwest
wind gusts approach 35 to 40 kts later in the afternoon and evening
at BUF and IAG.
Saturday...Areas of MVFR with scattered snow showers. Lake effect
snow possible east/northeast of both Lakes Erie and Ontario with
localized IFR.
Sunday...Areas of MVFR/IFR in lake effect snow showers east and
southeast of the lakes.
