Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak area of low pressure will slide across our region today with
light snow, with a little rain mixing in east of the Genesee Valley.
A much more significant storm will impact the Northeast early this
week, with potential for a foot of snow across our eastern zones,
and moderate accumulations elsewhere through Tuesday night. This
storm will end later Tuesday night and Wednesday as lake effect snow
southeast of the Lakes.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A weak area of low pressure will track northeast toward western New
York overnight. Increasing moisture and lift ahead of the low will
keep snow showers going through the entire night. The snow will be
light with accumulations from a coating to perhaps up to an inch.
Some upsloping off Lake Erie may increase some of the snowfall
late tonight/early Monday morning as the low tracks just north
of the area. Temperatures tonight will be in the upper 20s to
lower 30s.

Monday, a large mid-level trough will start to push toward the
region. This will yet again continue the potential for snow and/or
rain showers through the day. Some upsloping off Lake Erie will
continue during the day for western New York, where snow showers
will mix with rain at times, especially across the lower elevations.
Southerly flow through the day across the eastern half of the
forecast area will warm temperatures enough to allow much more of
those areas to mix with or change to rain during the day on Monday.
This southerly flow will occur out ahead of the weak sfc low that
will continue to weaken as it pushes east and phases with a larger
coastal low. The large coastal low tracking north toward southern NE
will push a plume of moisture north into the eastern third of the
forecast area by the afternoon, increasing shower coverage for these
areas, possibly to a steady snow/rain. With the warmer temperatures
over the eastern third of the area, and the lighter snow for the
western areas, snow accumulations should remain on the lower side
for the lower elevations. For areas of higher terrain, where
upsloping occurs off of Lake Erie, and over the Tug Hill, up to 3
inches will be possible. High temperatures on Monday will be in the
mid 30s for WNY to near 40 across the eastern zones.

Our attention turns to a developing Nor'Easter. A strong northern
stream trough will phase with a southern stream shortwave, resulting
low pressure near Cape Cod which will strengthen to about 975mb by
Tuesday. On Monday night an inverted surface trough will extend back
across the Eastern Lake Ontario region, where steady snow will move
in. As the system occludes, the western extension of the TROWAL will
pivot back across Central New York during Tuesday, producing the
steadiest snows for our forecast area. Expecting upslope enhancement
and perhaps limited lake enhancement south of Lake Ontario Tuesday
night, which could increase snow totals across higher terrain. The
snow will taper off Wednesday as the storm exits east of Cape Cod.

For the most part, model guidance is in good agreement for our area
since we'll far from the surface low. However, there are key
differences in the position of the closed mid level low which is
causing differences in model QPF. Specifically the 12Z NAM is
further east than the RGEM, resulting in a weaker mid level flow on
Tuesday which limits moisture transport into our region. When taking
into account upslope enhancement on Tuesday night, have ample
confidence to expand the Winter Storm Watch to include Ontario,
Wayne, Northern Cayuga, and Oswego counties. Looking for potential
accumulations of 5 to 10 inches in these counties, with 8 to 12
inches still possible in Lewis County. Moderate snows could produce
snowfall rates of 1 inch/hr at times.

Elsewhere, this is looking like an advisory event with 36-hour storm
totals generally in the 3 to 6 inch range. However, if the further
west track of the RGEM verifies, the watch may need to be expanded
west into Monroe and Livingston counties. There is also a low chance
amounts may approach warning criteria on the Chautauqua Ridge, but
this would be localized and over a long time period.

Otherwise, temperatures will hover near or below freezing with
daytime highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s on Tuesday. This should
allow for accumulating snows despite the mid-March sun angle. Winds
will also pick up during the day Tuesday with gusts to 35 mph
lasting into Tuesday night.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The coastal low will accelerate east and away from the coast, with
mainly dry weather returning by Wednesday evening. A ridge of high
pressure will then build into the eastern Great Lakes from Wednesday
evening through Thursday, supporting a period of dry weather.

The next strong trough will dig into the Upper Midwest Thursday
night and Friday, with a deepening low moving into the western Great
Lakes. A downstream ridge and warm advection will support a warming
trend Thursday through Friday, with a brief window of above normal
temperatures. Rain chances will increase from west to east later
Thursday night through Friday as a cold front approaches. Precip
will likely be rain, with any rain/snow mix mainly limited to the
North Country.

The deep trough will move east across the Great Lakes Friday night
and Saturday, with strong cold advection behind the cold front
sending temperatures back below normal again for next weekend. Rain
along the passing cold front will change to snow showers as the mid
level trough crosses the area later Friday night and Saturday. The
airmass may grow cold enough to support some lake effect snow east
and northeast of the lakes.

A cold westerly flow flow will then likely support some nuisance
snow showers on Sunday, with chances diminishing as we head into
Monday. High pressure moves into the region Monday with largely dry
weather across the region.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
For the 06Z TAFS MVFR flight conditions are found south of Lake
Ontario, with scattered light snow showers and flurries.
Visibilities will mainly remain above IFR through midday within this
light snow. As a surface low slowly tracks across our region, winds
will be light, but ceiling heights will fall to IFR across the 4
western TAF sites...and not until early this evening east of Lake
Ontario.

An area of low pressure, currently off the North Carolina coastline
will rapidly deepen tonight as it tracks northward. This low will
send Atlantic moisture westward, with a steady snow/rain developing
near KART between 21 and 00Z before becoming all snow a few hours
later. With lake enhancement, this snow fill in westward across all
remaining TAF sites by the end of tonight.

Friday...MVFR/IFR with widespread rain showers expected.
