.SYNOPSIS...
A relatively weak storm system passing to our south will generate
several hours of accumulating snow across the far western counties
during the first half of tonight with several inches of accumulation
targeting the Southern Tier. An expansive area of very strong high
pressure centered over Manitoba will then extend south across the
Great lakes region Tuesday and Wednesday. While generally fair
weather will accompany this system...it will be cold enough for some
nuisance lake snows.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Frontogentic forcing within a relatively dry airmass has produced
some flurries across the western counties this morning...but this
lift will weaken during the course of the afternoon. In fact...much
of the cloud cover will briefly clear out for areas east of
Rochester.

Our attention though is mainly focused on a broad area of low
pressure over the Mid Western states that will become a little
better organized late today and tonight...as it will track east
southeast across the Mid Atlantic region. Low level forcing
within the 'storms' deformation zone will be strong enough to
generate a 40 mile wide strip of moderately strong lift...which
should allow for a short period of moderate to possibly heavy
snow across the western Southern Tier. The snow may start as a
little rain across Chautauqua co. Fortunately...the period of
strongest forcing will be relatively short (3-5 hrs)...so snowfall
rates of a half to one inch an hour should NOT be able to generate
more than 3 to 6 inches of snow. A winter weather advisory will be
in effect for the western Southern Tier for much of tonight. Lesser
amounts of snow will be found within the northern portion of the
shield of snow so that by the time you reach the south shore of
Lake Ontario in Niagara and Orleans counties...only trace amounts
are expected. Meanwhile...dry weather with partly to mostly skies
will be found across the North country.

A large area of very strong high pressure centered over Manitoba
will then extend southwards across the Great Lakes region Tuesday
and Tuesday night. While the airmass ahead of this atypical arctic
high will only be marginally colder than what we have experienced
over the past couple days...it may be cold enough to support a weak
lake response off Lk Ontario. There will be several things working
against organized lake snows on Tuesday though...including a very
low cap (<5kft) and increasingly disruptive late season diurnal
induced mixing. Snow showers are more likely across the North
country where a ribbon of PVA within the cyclonic flow aloft will
lead a swath of deeper moisture into the area. Otherwise...brisk
winds will sharpen the edge to a cold airmass with a convergent flow
aloft and a fair amount of low level dry air promoting sunshine over
the western counties. Clouds will remain common across the Eastern
Lake Ontario region.

Generally fair weather will be in place Tuesday night...although
more favorable nocturnal conditions (lack of diurnal mixing) with a
slightly higher cap may allow for some light lake effect for the
Finger Lakes region. While it will be cold Tuesday night with mins
in the teens to mid 20s...some cloud cover and a strong enough
pressure gradient to keep the winds >10kts will help to keep the
mercury from dropping off any further.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
There may be some lingering light snow showers Wednesday morning,
but expect lowering inversion heights and warming 850mb temps
to pretty much end the lake snows by Wednesday afternoon. Expect
model QPF is overdone after 18Z Wednesday, with lingering lake
effect clouds but not much more than flurries in the cool
northerly flow.

Temperatures will average below normal during the period with highs
running 5-10 degrees below normal.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Mid-level ridge axis across the Central Great Lakes on Thursday will
shift eastward across the area through Friday, providing generally
fair weather. Temperatures will average slightly below normal during
this time, with a fair amount of cloud cover lingering, even
underneath the surface high.

00Z model guidance has come into much better agreement handling the
next system with a vertically stacked low tracking from eastern
Michigan to Western NY before transitioning to a coastal low on
Saturday. Better model agreement on timing provides confidence to
expand likely POPs Friday night into Saturday as a band of mid-level
warm air advection pushes ahead of the surface low. Precipitation
type will be a challenge since the surface low will track across the
area. Rain or snow are both possible, and can't rule out a brief
period of sleet or freezing rain. Fortunately amounts are on the
light side, with QPF in the quarter inch ballpark. Precipitation
will change to mainly snow showers once the low exits to the east on
Saturday. It won't be cold enough for lake effect Saturday night,
but there could be some upslope enhancement. Little, if any, snow
accumulation. Expect Sunday to be mainly dry, but cool, with highs
in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

.AVIATION /19Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Mainly VFR weather is expected this afternoon.

An area of low pressure will then pass by to our south tonight. This
will support a strip of moderately heavy snow across the Southern
Tier for the first half of tonight with IFR to LIFR conditions at
KJHW and KELZ. The northern edge of the shield of snow will likely
result in MVFR vsbys in snow at KBUF and KIAG...and possibly
KROC...for a few hours this evening. VFR weather will return late.
Meanwhile...VFR weather is anticipated for most of tonight at KART.

Mainly VFR weather will be found across the western counties on
Tuesday...while MVFR cigs will be found east of KROC. These lower
cigs may be accompanied by some snow showers...mainly across the
North country.

Outlook...

Tuesday night...Mainly VFR, but MVFR in light lake snow showers
across the Finger Lakes and also east of Lk Ontario.
Wednesday and Thursday...Mainly VFR.
Friday...Mainly VFR. IFR/MVFR with snow showers possible late Friday.
Saturday...MVFR to IFr weather in light snow.

.MARINE...
Gentle to moderate breezes on both lakes today will freshen on Lake
Erie during the afternoon..as A wedge of high pressure will move
away across New England. A small craft advisory has been issued for
the NY nearshore waters southwest of Dunkirk.

Tonight...moderate northeasterlies will strengthen somewhat...
especially on Lake Erie where fresh to strong breezes can be
expected...as a storm system will pass by across Pennsylvania.

Fresh to strong northwesterlies will be found throughout the Great
Lakes on Tuesday. The strongest winds will be over Lake Ontario...so
this is where high end small craft advisories will be most likely.
