A deep storm system over the upper Midwest on Monday will spread a
swath of steady...widespread precipitation across our forecast area
Monday afternoon and night. While the bulk of the precipitation will
fall as rain over far western NY, a wintry mix with some snow will
occur elsewhere, except across the eastern Lake Ontario region where
a significant snowfall still remains possible. High pressure will
taper off the precipitation Tuesday afternoon, with the next chances
for rain and snow showers then arriving Wednesday.

through the early overnight hours.

Otherwise, dry and fair weather prevails across the region though
cool northwest flow in place will spur the development of some
additional cloud cover southeast of the lakes overnight. Temps will
drop into the 20s to upper teens south of Lake Ontario, with low
teens across the North Country.

Lingering fair weather Monday morning will give way to deteriorating
conditions through the course of Monday afternoon and evening...as a
vertically stacked and slowly weakening storm system pushes from the
Midwest to the Central Great Lakes...and pivots its associated warm
front northeastward into western New York. As this occurs...
increasing moisture and isentropic lift along and north of the warm
front coupled with increasing low level convergence along the nose
of a 45-50 knot jet impinging upon the frontal zone will lead to
steady precipitation overspreading areas from the Finger Lakes
westward Monday afternoon...and the North Country Monday evening.
The above timing reflects the slow but steady slowing trend seen
with this system over the past couple of days...and is a few hours
slower than our previous continuity.

In addition to the above slowing trend...this system also continues
to trend a little bit colder during the Monday afternoon and Monday
evening time frame...which has implications for both ptype (and
consequently snow/ice amounts) south of Lake Ontario through the
first half of Monday night. Regarding ptype...with somewhat colder
thermal profiles in place the initial rain/wet snow mix as the
precipitation arrives will have an easier time transitioning to
predominantly snow for a time with evaporational cooling/saturation
of the column late Monday afternoon and early Monday evening...with
this particularly the case from the Genesee Valley and northern
portions of the Niagara Frontier eastward across the Finger Lakes.
West of this...the remainder of far western New York will be a bit
warmer overall both at the surface and aloft...which should result
in mainly rain initially transitioning to a mix with snow and sleet
inland from Lake Erie later Monday afternoon and early Monday
evening as the low levels saturate and cool...with it still
appearing possible that enough surface-based cooling may occur to
also bring the risk of some freezing rain and light icing to
interior portions of the Southern Tier. Meanwhile...thermal profiles
across the North Country will be cold enough to support all snow as
the pcpn overspreads that area Monday evening.

As we push through Monday night...the initial surface low will lift
into Southern Ontario...while secondary surface cyclogenesis takes
place off the New Jersey coastline. In between these two systems...
the now-occluding warm frontal boundary will pivot northeastward
across western New York...with the primary low's trailing cold front
entering far western New York very late in the night. During this
time further overall warming of the atmospheric column will
gradually force the wintry mix and snow to change back over to
mainly rain from the western Finger Lakes westward...with the pcpn
in this area also tending to begin to wind down during the second
half of the night following the passage of the surface occlusion and
the departure of the better forcing. Meanwhile...colder thermal
profiles with increasing northeastward extent will allow for more of
a rain/snow mix to persist across the eastern Finger Lakes...and
fairly steady snow to continue across the North Country.

With respect to snowfall accumulations through Monday night...these
look to range from an inch or two across Niagara County to a general
2-4"/pockets of 3-5" from the Genesee Valley eastward across the
Finger Lakes. Meanwhile across the North Country...a general 2-4"/3-
6" across the lower elevations/higher terrain respectively still
appears likely...though these amounts have come down a bit in tandem
with lowering QPF forecasts for this system. As for the potential
icing across interior portions of the Southern Tier...that currently
looks to be on the order of a tenth of an inch or two...with this
mixed in with the sleet and snow.

With respect to winter weather headlines...for now will be leaving
the existing Winter Storm Watch for Oswego and Lewis counties as is
given both the Monday night-Tuesday timing of the event and the
increasingly more marginal and limited areal extent of any warning-
criteria snow amounts. Elsewhere...will also hold off on any Winter
Advisories given the lower confidence in freezing rain (Southern
Tier) or in reaching advisory criteria for snowfall (Southern
Tier/Genesee Valley across the Finger Lakes).

With the above being said...the approach and passage of this system
will also bring a couple periods of strong gusty winds. The first of
these will be due to the passage of the aforementioned low level
jet...which could briefly lead to some strong downslope winds
downwind of the Chautauqua Ridge late Monday afternoon and early
Monday evening.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Tuesday...the complex storm system will push further northeastward
with the initial primary low sweeping its trailing cold front
across our region from west to east. Coupled with high pressure
and drier air nosing into our region from the Ohio Valley and
Central Great Lakes in the wake of the frontal passage...this
will allow the lingering mix of mainly rain/wet snow south of
Lake Ontario and accumulating snow across the North Country to
taper off from west to east through the course of the day...
though not before another 1-3" of snow potentially falls across
the higher terrain east of Lake Ontario. With only very modest
low-level cooling expected in the wake of the cold front and
good mixing anticipated due to the expected windy conditions
(more on which follows a bit further below)...highs on Tuesday
will range from the mid to upper 30s across the higher terrain
to the lower half of the 40s elsewhere.

Tuesday night...ridging at all levels will drift across New
York State from west to east. This will help bring an end to any
leftover snow showers east of Lake Ontario during Tuesday
evening...with a dry and tranquil night otherwise expected.
Expect lows to range through the 20s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Subtle upper level and surface ridging Wednesday will slide east
across eastern New York State and into New England, as the next
upper level shortwave trough and attendant surface low develops and
advances eastward across the western and central Great Lakes. This
will generally support a quiet and dry morning across western and
north-central New York Wednesday before a few snow showers
associated with the warm front of the advancing system spills across
the western portions of area and areas along the Lake Ontario
shoreline Wednesday afternoon. Addtional this will place the area
under the warm sector of the surface low and provide for ample warm
air advection.

The aforementioned low over the upper/central Great Lakes Wednesday
will advance east northeast across the area into southern
Quebec/northern New England Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Through its passage, it will drag an occluded and cold front across
the area, supporting widespread showers to engulf the region. Due to
the warm air advection Wednesday afternoon, showers will mainly fall
in the form of rain. As the low pulls east/northeast Thursday
morning, wrap around moisture and west/northwest winds will support
a few lingering showers into early Thursday afternoon. Otherwise a
ridge of surface high pressure will push into the western portions
of the region Thursday night and support dry weather.

Forecast confidence then lowers heading into the last day of the
work week and into the start of the weekend. Model discrepancies
continue among the long range guidance packages regarding the battle
between the how much the surface high will retreat north as the next
surface low advances east/northeastward across the Gulf/Mid-Atlantic
states before jutting out to the Atlantic and traveling
northeastward along the Atlantic seaboard. This all being said, one
of two scenarios may happen: 1. The surface ridge retreats north
towards the Hudson Bay, allowing the surface low to the south to
track further north as well. This would result in widespread
precipitation to fall region wide. 2. A stronger surface high with
little retreat northward will limit the northward extent of the
surface low's track and therefore limit percipition to fall across
the far southern portions of the area. Overall, tried to split the
difference between the two tracks with this forecast package and
therefore low end likely PoP cover the southern portions of the
forecast area while the northern portions of the area remain under
chance PoPs for snow.

High pressure will then slide across the Great Lakes Saturday
towards the Mid-Atlantic before expanding in coverage Sunday.
Overall this will help dry out the airmass overhead and supporting a
period of dry weather.

Otherwise, March will kick off with temperatures above average
Wednesday and Thursday before dropping towards average for the
closure of the work week and throughout the weekend.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
While there will be MVFR cigs across the North Country through about
08z...VFR weather with light winds can be expected through daybreak
and the first half of Monday.

Conditions will then deteriorate to MVFR and IFR from southwest to
northeast in the afternoon as a low pressure system will produce a
large swath of precipitation that will advect into the region.
Precipitation type is expected to be mainly rain or a rain/snow mix
across western NY (BUF/IAG/JHW), with snow favored from the Genesee
Valley eastward (ROC/ART).

Outlook...

Monday night...MVFR/IFR. Rain and snow western NY with mainly snow
from Finger Lakes to the North Country, including ART.
Tuesday...Areas of MVFR/IFR in rain/snow early, improving in the afternoon.
Wednesday...Mainly VFR.
Thursday...MVFR to VFR. Chance of rain and snow showers.
Friday...MVFR. Chance of snow showers.

.MARINE...
High pressure crossing the region overnight will continue to bring
calmer conditions from west to east across the lakes. Winds and
waves continue to relax across Lake Erie and the western end of Lake
Ontario, though SCAs remain in effect further east as a stiff
northwesterly breeze and moderate chop remains across the eastern
end of the lake.

A deep storm system over the upper Midwest on Monday will lead to
freshening easterly winds across the Lower Great Lakes. The
strongest winds and highest wave action will initially be found over
Canadian waters...but as we press through the afternoon into Monday
night...the winds will continue to strengthen while veering more to
the southeast. A new round of small craft advisories will likely be
needed...even though the roughest conditions will continue to be in
international waters.

Strong southwesterlies can then be anticipated on Tuesday as the
aforementioned storm system will exit across the St Lawrence valley.
There is no doubt the SCA's will be needed for this period.
