.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system lifting out of the Ohio Valley will push a couple
rounds of rain across our region later this afternoon and tonight,
with mixed precipitation developing across the North Country
tonight. Any rain or mixed precipitation will turn over to all snow
by early Friday as notably colder air pours in across the area in
the wake of the storm system with most areas not making it out of
the 20s.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Based on latest mesoscale guidance, pushed back the start time
of the rain showers a bit today, with showers not reaching the
Buffalo/Rochester metro areas until late in the afternoon.
Conditions will deteriorate from southwest to northeast late
this afternoon into this evening as the next storm system moves
northeast across Indiana into Ohio today. This low will then
track across our forecast area tonight.

A frontal zone will stall over the region today, with a tightening
temperature gradient and baroclinic zone across our area. This will
yield a big spread in temperatures, with highs only in the upper 30s
to lower 40s north of the Thruway, while areas toward the NY/PA
state line reach the lower to mid 50s. The track of the low will
allow areas along and north of the Thruway to remain trapped in the
colder air owed to low level northeast flow the entire day,
preventing warmer air from advecting further north.

Rain will move from southwest to northeast across areas south of
Lake Ontario this afternoon as a strong push of isentropic upglide
and moisture transport develops ahead of the system. Rain may hold
off until very late in the day across the Eastern Lake Ontario
region. Another more organized period of rain will move from west to
east across the area tonight along and ahead of the cold front and
mid level trough. The track of the low will keep the better
instability and thunder chances farther south. A few isolated
thunderstorms are possible this evening through the early overnight
across the Southern Tier. If any thunderstorms or even convective
showers materialize, they may contain locally gusty winds.

The other aspect of this low track is that it will allow a
northeasterly flow of colder low level air to be drawn in to the
north of the low which will produce a freezing rain risk. This is
especially true across the North Country where confidence is now
high enough that a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for
freezing rain for Jefferson and Lewis counties. Ice accumulations up
to a quarter of an inch will be possible near the Saint Lawrence,
with one to two tenths of an inch of ice possible across the
remainder of the central and northern portions of Jefferson and
Lewis counties. South of Lake Ontario expect a cold rain, with a
much lower risk of freezing rain. However, potential for some
freezing rain could increase here as well if the low tracks further
south. This will need to be monitored.

The strong cold front will sweep east across the area late tonight,
with rain and mixed precipitation changing over to snow from
northwest to southeast through mid morning Friday. Temperatures
tonight will fall back into the mid 20s to low 30s by Friday
morning.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Trend that is showing up is quicker progression of sfc low and low-
level front but a slower trend with progression of positive tilted
northern branch trough and H85 low, warm air. Net result is an
increased chance for freezing rain/sleet through mid morning
southeast Lake Ontario across the North Country. Ice amounts will
not be too significant but could push a tenth of an inch into mid
morning. Due to the risk of ice, a winter weather advisory for
Jefferson and Lewis counties will continue through 18z on Friday.

Eventually, the column cools enough with ptype becoming snow from
west to east. Mid-level trough axis moving through during the day
with cold air advection and cyclonic low-level flow across the open
lakes will lead to widespread light snow across the much of the
area, especially east and southeast of the lakes where lake
enhancement will occur with sufficient over-water instability (H85
temps down below -10 in the aftn resulting in delta t/s toward 15c).
Even so, greatest snow amounts will only amount to an inch or two as
the forcing is weakening by time coldest air arrives later in the
day. Most spots will just see a coating of snow through the day.
Temperatures will slowly fall through the day with readings in the
20s all areas by afternoon. With the falling temperatures any
lingering liquid could freeze on untreated roads and sidewalks. Will
mention this in the HWO as it would impact the Friday morning
commute.

This airmass will be replaced rapidly as sharp ridging aloft and at
the sfc builds across northeast. Temps may drop to single digits
east of Lake Ontario but will be steady or slowly rise in the teens
to lower 20s elsewhere as the low-level ridge passes to the east.

Return flow will be in full swing on Saturday with departing sfc
high over Atlantic and sfc trough crossing Ontario. Southwest winds
could gust over 45 mph northeast of Lake Erie with 30-40 mph gusts
elsewhere. Winds diminish Saturday night as high pressure over
Ontario and Quebec drifts toward the region. Baroclinic zone at H925-
H85 remains north of the region as will any light precipitation.
Temps will stay mild in the upper 20s to lower 30s with southwest
low-level flow.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure over the eastern U.S. & Canada will provide for quiet
weather for Sunday to end the weekend. Temperatures will warm again,
into the lower to middle 40s.

A fairly quick moving system across southern Canada will drag a cold
front across the area on Monday afternoon, and into Monday night. A
few rain showers changing to snow showers will be possible with the
passing front, but the limited moisture will keep precip light.

Tuesday into Tuesday night, a weak system will make a run in from
the upper lakes in zonal flow aloft. Mainly cloudy, with just a
small chance of rain/snow showers.

Wednesday into Thursday, guidance has a large area of low pressure
lumbering from the central Plains to the lower Great Lakes. There
are differences in this scenario of operational models compared to
respective ensembles. Overall though precip will overspread the area
during this time period. Precip type will be dependent on the track
of the area of low pressure, with some guidance tracking the storm
south of the area, resulting in cooler temps and better potential
for snow. Other guidance tracks the system north of the area and a
better chance of rain with warmer temps, followed by cold air
advection and a change to snow.

Temperatures for the first half of the period are expected to be
above normal, followed by near normal temperatures for Wednesday.

.AVIATION /15Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Expect low VFR/marginal MVFR CIGS today with the exception of areas
near the NY/PA line as a weak cold front sags south over the area
and stalls out. Areas across the Southern Tier (KJHW) will be right
on the southern edge of the lower CIGS through mid to late morning.
There may be a brief period of VFR conditions around KJHW from
midday through mid afternoon or so, before flight conditions
deteriorate here with MVFR CIGS developing later this afternoon as
well ahead of the next system tracking northeast across the Ohio
Valley today. This system will then track northeast and cross
western and northcentral NY tonight. A swath of light to
occasionally moderate rain will overspread the region in the process
later this afternoon and evening, with a more organized period of
rain that will move from west to east across the area tonight along
and ahead of the cold front and mid level trough. Expect widespread
IFR CIGS conditions tonight.

There will be a chance of mixed precipitation as well, including
freezing rain across the North Country this evening through the
overnight.

Outlook...

Friday...MVFR/local IFR with lake effect snow showers southeast of
the lakes. Windy.
Saturday and Sunday...VFR. Windy at times.
Monday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of showers.

update. Low pressure will then move from the Ohio Valley this
afternoon to just south of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario tonight,
then into New England early Friday. Northeast winds will

Craft Advisory conditions developing. Winds will flip to the
northwest late tonight and Friday as the low exits, with Small
Craft Advisory conditions on Lake Ontario and Lake Erie through
Friday.
