.SYNOPSIS...
A warming trend is expected through midweek, peaking Wednesday and
Thursday. Winds will be gusty at times from midweek into the
weekend. A cold front will bring a period of rain showers later
Thursday and Thursday night, followed by colder conditions
Friday and Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A ridge of high pressure will cross the region today supporting
a fair and mild day. A few lingering clouds east of Lake
Ontario early this morning with mainly clear skies elsewhere.

Plenty of sunshine expected areawide today, before mid and high
clouds start arriving later in the day. High temperatures will
reach the upper 40s to lower 50s across western New York to the
lower to mid 40s east of Lake Ontario.

A band of moist isentropic lift on the nose of a strong low-level
jet will lift into the area ahead of a warm front tonight.
Precipitation with this system will remain spotty and rather light
as the main forcing lifts well north of the area with the trajectory
of low pressure moving into the northern Great lakes far removed
from western New York.

An increasing southerly gradient flow will support a non-diurnal
temperature trend tonight with rising temperatures overnight,
and then support WARM high temperatures Wednesday in the 50s to
mid 60s, with the warmest readings south of Lake Ontario. These
readings will approach record highs for the day at our 3 climate
sites (Buffalo 63F/1954, Rochester 61F/1949, and Watertown
56F/1954).

A 60-65 knot low-level jet will overspread the area later tonight
and Wednesday leading to increasingly windy conditions. The
strongest winds initially will be across favored southerly downslope
areas along Lake Erie where gusts up to 50 mph will be possible. As
the winds turn southwest on Wednesday, areas downwind of the
lakes especially across the Niagara Frontier could gust up to 50
mph. Wind advisories may be needed in later forecasts for portions
of the area.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Surface high pressure will move off the east coast Tuesday
night, allowing for warm advection to increase across the Great
Lakes ahead of low pressure moving from the upper Midwest across
Lake Superior late Tuesday night and Wednesday. The increasing
isentropic upglide will bring increasing clouds and possibly a
few scattered light rain showers later Tuesday night into
Wednesday, but the majority of the time will be rain free with
the more widespread measurable rain staying well north of the
US/Canadian border.

Temperatures will start to rise later Tuesday night as SSW winds and
warm advection increase. Temperatures will then SOAR on Wednesday as
a strong SSW push of warm air arrives. Expect highs to reach the low
to mid 60s for many lower elevation locations in Western NY, and 50s
east of Lake Ontario. Daily record highs will be in jeopardy
Wednesday. While it will be very warm, it will also be very windy.
Expect southerly downslope winds along the Lake Erie shore to gust
over 40 mph later Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. These gusty
winds will then spread into the rest of the area Wednesday with
gusts of 30-40+ mph in many areas and locally 45-50 mph across the
Niagara Frontier. Forecast wind profiles from the GFS continue to
look too aggressive Wednesday, with the NAM more reasonable but still
supportive of potential Wind Advisory gusts across Western NY.

Another southern stream Pacific shortwave moving out of the 4-
corners region will support a deepening surface low crossing the mid
Mississippi Valley early Thursday morning. The surface low will
reach far southern lower Michigan Thursday evening, then move just
north of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Thursday night, gradually
deepening with time. The southern stream wave will at least
partially phase with another northern stream shortwave moving
into the northern Great Lakes Thursday, with the resulting deepening
trough and strong upper level jet dynamics supporting the
strengthening surface low.

Temperatures will remain very warm Thursday as deep southerly flow
ahead of the system continues to pump spring-like air into the
region. Expect highs well into the 50s areawide. Thursday should
start dry in the morning, but rain chances will increase from
southwest to northeast from late morning through the afternoon
as deep moisture and isentropic upglide arrive ahead of the
approaching low. The passage of the cold front and mid level trough
Thursday night will continue to support periods of showers.

It will turn windy Thursday night along and behind a strong cold
front. The track of the system, deepening and passing just to our
north and west, is climatologically favorable for strong winds in
our region. That said, forecast soundings continue to show a
relatively limited post-frontal wind field, with the stronger winds
aloft confined to the warm airmass ahead of the system where they
have little chance to fully mix down. Model guidance has also
trended a little weaker and farther south with the low track over
the past few days, lowering the chance of strong post-frontal winds.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Strong cold air advection behind a cold front Friday will produce
steady or falling surface temperatures through the day. Temperatures
around freezing to start the day will fall down into the lower 20s
by the days end. Additionally a gusty wind through the day will
lower apparent temperatures into the single digits for our region.

There will also be a brief lake response with west to northwest
winds driving lake effect snow inland. Though temperatures aloft at
850 hPa will lower to around -18C, limited moisture and strong winds
sheering the lake bands will limit snowfall...with perhaps an inch
or two on the hills to the east and southeast of the Lakes. Surface
high pressure will nose northeastward across our region Friday night
and Saturday morning...ending lake snows while also diminishing the
gusty winds.

Later Saturday and Sunday a decent gradient wind will develop
between the surface high passing to our south, and low pressure/cold
front over Ontario Canada. Gusts northeast of the Lakes to 40 mph
(Erie) and 35 mph (Ontario) will be possible both days.

The next chance for precipitation will be later Sunday night and
into Monday when an upper level trough nears our region. Lower
pressure reflected at the surface will bring chances for mixed
precipitation becoming all rain through the day Monday.

.AVIATION /09Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
VFR flight conditions will dominate this 06Z TAF package. An
anafrontal structured cold front will move east of our region
tonight. Clouds near Lake Ontario will be around 4K feet. Associated
precipitation will remain east of KART.

Otherwise light gusts overnight will gradually diminish. High
pressure will edge towards the region Tuesday with light southwest
winds and VFR flight conditions.
