.SYNOPSIS...
Strengthening low pressure passing to our west today will bring a
general steady rain while also ushering in notably milder air with
widespread 50s over the western counties. Strong winds on the
backside of the system will result in potentially damaging wind
gusts of 50 to 60 mph tonight for a large portion of the area. A
brief shot of seasonably cold air will arrive Friday and Saturday
before milder weather quickly returns.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
...POTENTIALLY DAMAGING WINDS FOR SOME AREAS TONIGHT...

Pacific jet dominated pattern will bring an upper level trough
through the middle Mississippi Valley this morning into the central
Great Lakes by this evening. Warm front lifting into the region will
bring a swath of steady rain, which is starting to edge toward
the western Southern Tier early this morning. A few surface
temperatures still at or just below freezing, so some spotty
light freezing rain is possible, but if this occurs it will be
very brief.

The steady rain moving into Western New York early this morning
will reach the eastern Lake Ontario region by late morning or
early this afternoon. There is also a low chance of some spotty
light freezing rain if the rain reaches this area early enough.
Overall, expect rainfall to average 0.33"-0.75" for most of the
area, a little lower across the western Finger Lakes and
portions of the western Southern Tier.

The warm frontal passage will arrive this afternoon across
western New York and this evening across the Finger Lakes and
the North Country, with the steady rain tapering off to
scattered showers. Following the warm sector dry slot, expect
another band of showers along and ahead of the cold front to
move into western New York by early evening, then move east
across the rest of the area through the early overnight hours.

Dynamic low pressure moving to the north and west of the area
will ramp up winds significantly. Initially, southerly winds
will increase today, with a favorable set up for downslope winds
to gust to 50-55 mph off the Chautauqua Ridge. Warm advection
will keep winds lower elsewhere.

It looks like the strongest winds will be behind this system
tonight. Cold air advection will be modest behind this system
and the isallobaric fall/rise couplet passes by to our
northwest. These factors suggest that winds aloft will not fully
mix to the surface. However, model forecast wind fields have
been very consistent with around 55 kts at 925mb and 60 kts at
850 mb northeast of Lake Erie. While the low is only about 996
mb, it takes a climatologically favorable track for causing high
winds in our area. The strongest winds may actually develop
within a potential convective line of showers along the cold
front that sweeps through the area. Expecting peak wind gusts
around 60 mph in the warning areas. For most areas it will be a
relatively short event, only lasting 3 to 6 hours.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
By Friday morning, a secondary low pressure system will have formed
over the Canadian Maritimes, causing the initial low over southern
Quebec/Northern New York to weaken which will support the further
weakening of the elevated winds across the eastern Great Lakes.
Additionally, this well established west/southwesterly flow within a
colder air mass will support some limited lake enhancement and
upslope east of the lakes. Surface temperatures across the higher
terrain will remain marginally cool enough to support some snow to
accumulate, with up to an inch possible across the Southern Tier and
Boston Hills and 2 to 4 inches possible east of Lake Ontario on the
Tug Hill. Otherwise, the remainder of the areas will see a mix of
rain and a few wet flakes.

A mid-level shortwave and secondary cold front will cross the area
from northwest to southeast Friday night, which will advect in a
colder air mass across the region and result in a lake response. The
bands that formed Friday will gradually shift southeast of both
lakes Friday night. In their passage south, the singular bands off
of each lake will break into multiple bands. Additionally as both
bands shift southward, the region will see both equilibrium levels
and synoptic moisture briefly increase and thus result in a quick
possible inch of snow to fall during the first half of the night.
Then expect the multi-banded lake effect to linger into Saturday
morning with minor snowfall accumulations. Otherwise, lows Friday
night will range in the 20s, with the coolest temperatures across
the higher elevations.

As alluded to previously, a few light flurries will continue
southeast of both lakes Saturday morning. However, these flurries
won't last long as surface high pressure will be ridging across the
eastern Great Lakes. Dry weather is then expected to last throughout
Saturday and Saturday night as high pressure resides overhead of the
area. Additionally, the region will begin to see some sunny skies
Saturday afternoon with the clear skies lasting throughout the
overnight hours. As such, temperatures Saturday will warm up to have
highs range from the upper 20s to low 30s, and lows cool off to be
in the upper teens to mid 20s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure will continue to reside over the eastern Great Lakes
Sunday and provide for mostly sunny skies and dry weather to grace
the region. Temperatures will be on the climb with highs in the
upper 30s across eastern Lake Ontario and low to mid 40s elsewhere.

A sharp negatively tilted trough across the eastern half of the
CONUS for the later half of the weekend and into the early parts of
the new work week will support a coastal low to ride northeast up
along the Atlantic shoreline. While this will bring a mix of rain
and snow to far southeast New York, the western and north-central
New York regions will remain on the dry side. Being on the northwest
side of the low, the region will remain under a warm southwesterly
breeze which will support surface temperatures to warm up into 40s,
with a few locations nearing the 50 degree mark.

Tuesday, a weak surface low over the Hudson bay will cross east
across northern Quebec, where it will drag its cold front across the
region. Limited moisture and lift associated with the front may
support a few lake enhanced snow showers east of both lakes.

The cooler air mass won't last too long as another bout of mild air
ahead of a surface low crossing northeast across the Ohio Valley
makes its way towards the region Wednesday. As the low approaches
the region expect winds to become breezy Tuesday night. Additionally
expect a mix of precipitation types to sweep from southwest to
northeast Wednesday. Mainly things will start off as either snow or
a mix of rain and snow and switch over to rain throughout the day.

.AVIATION /12Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Deepening low pressure will reach the central Great Lakes early
tonight. Precipitation (mostly rain, though some freezing rain
is possible in a few spots across the Southern Tier and north
central New York) and low level clouds will enter western New
York this morning causing flight conditions to deteriorate to
MVFR/IFR.

A swath of widespread steady rain will overspread the rest of the
region this morning with corresponding cigs lowering to IFR to MVFR
levels. Increasing winds aloft will pose the risk for low level wind
shear during the midday and afternoon, then as mixing takes place,
that threat will be minimized.

Rain tapering to scattered showers tonight with conditions
remaining MVFR/IFR. Strong winds southwest winds downwind of the
lakes with gusts to 50kts possible at KIAG/KBUF/KROC and 45kts
at KART.

Outlook...

Friday and Saturday...VFR/MVFR with lingering stratus and a
small chance of rain or snow showers.

Sunday and Monday...VFR

A strong area of low pressure will move from the central Great Lakes
late today to southern Quebec by Friday morning. This system will
bring gale force winds to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario from late
Thursday through early Friday. Small craft headlines precede the
gales for Lake Erie and the Niagara River within the increasing
southwesterly flow developing today.
