.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will briefly build across the region through this
evening, providing dry weather through tonight and a few breaks
of sunshine in some spots this afternoon. Otherwise the
upcoming week will feature above normal temperatures, with the
mildest conditions expected Tuesday and again Thursday when some
locations could reach the 50 degree mark. The next chances for
precipitation will come on Tuesday when a modest cold front will
cross our area, and again Thursday in association with a
passing wave of low pressure.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A ridge axis extending from the Ohio Valley across Lake Huron
early this afternoon will slide eastward across our region this
evening. This will promote at least a partial clearing trend
through this evening as the ridge builds in.

This will provide a brief window for good radiational cooling
conditions during the first half of the night, before clouds
increase in advance of the next system. Clear skies will last
the longest across the North Country, so hedge below model
guidance there with lows 10 to 15. Elsewhere, expecting lows
mainly in the lower to mid 20s.

Tuesday morning will start dry as a ridge of high pressure
drifts to the east coast, with lingering dry air and subsidence
across NY. A mid level trough will move from the western Great
Lakes Tuesday morning to the eastern Great Lakes by Tuesday
evening, with an associated cold front reaching Western NY
midday to early afternoon, then progressing to the eastern Lake
Ontario region by late afternoon. The stronger forcing from DPVA
and height falls will spread from the western Great Lakes into
Ontario and Quebec, with a relatively short window of DPVA and
moisture convergence crossing our region. Expect a relatively
brief period of showers along and ahead of the cold front, from
around noon through mid afternoon across Western NY and mid
afternoon through early evening east of Lake Ontario.

Temperatures will be warm enough for all rain areawide, with highs
reaching well into the 40s in most areas and upper 30s for portions
of Lewis County. It will turn quite windy Tuesday as a 50+ knot low
level jet crosses the eastern Great Lakes ahead of the cold front.
Low level warm advection and associated poor lapse rates do not
appear to support efficient mixing of all the wind aloft to the
surface, but nonetheless winds will gust in the 30-40 mph range
areawide and locally 45 mph for the Niagara Frontier.

Tuesday night, for most of the area any lingering showers will end
in the evening. Westerly upslope flow and some modest lake
enhancement will develop east of Lake Ontario as 850MB temps drop to
-9C or so overnight, supporting an area of rain/snow showers
 changing to snow across the Tug Hill region with minor
 accumulations possible across the high terrain. The airmass is
 not nearly as cold over Lake Erie, so any lingering upslope
 rain/snow showers early in the evening will end overnight.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
An upper level ridge will build over the Great Lakes and Northeast
region Wednesday through Wednesday night. Surface high pressure will
move across the region Wednesday and depart to the east Wednesday
night. Dry weather expected Wednesday through much of Wednesday
night. High temperatures will reach the upper 30s to low 40s
Wednesday with diminishing clouds through the day. Calm and clear
conditions expected Wednesday evening which will cause temperatures
to fall quickly. Low temperatures will likely be met early with lows
in the low to mid 20s east of Lake Ontario to the mid to upper 20s
across western NY.

A southern stream shortwave trough over the southern Plains
Wednesday evening will move northeast and reach the central Great
Lakes region Thursday morning. Surface low pressure will follow a
similar track ahead of the trough and drive a plume of GOMEX
moisture northward into the eastern Great Lakes region. A southeast
wind will increase late Wednesday night through Thursday. Cold
surface temperatures will start to slowly climb late Wednesday night
however moisture will also be surging northward and rain or freezing
rain will move into far western NY and the Southern Tier by daybreak
Thursday. Then it will be a race between moisture increasing
northward and surface temperatures rising. There is the potential
for a short period of freezing rain prior to surface temperatures
rising above freezing across western NY into north central NY. A
glaze to a few hundredths of an inch are possible at this time.
Confidence remains low since it's still 3 days out and timing of
precipitation remains uncertain. After the initial wintry mix,
widespread rain will cover the entire region. High temperatures will
reach the low to mid 40s east of Lake Ontario to the upper 40s to
low 50s across western NY. Liquid amounts will average 0.25-0.50
inches late Wednesday night through Thursday.

Surface low pressure will track to the northwest Thursday through
Thursday night. Southwest winds will increase Thursday with gusts up
to 45 mph possible northeast of the Lakes by Thursday evening. Drier
air will move into the region from southwest to northeast late
Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening. Rain will taper off
across western and north central NY Thursday night. Lows will reach
the mid to upper 30s, low 40s across the Finger Lakes.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Forecast uncertainty remains Friday through the weekend as another
shortwave trough dives south across the central US. A chilly airmass
will likely follow this system and result in colder than normal
temperatures Saturday. Initially, mostly dry weather expected Friday.
Then, a weak wave with cold air will move near if not across the
eastern Great Lakes. A widespread snow is possible Saturday through
Saturday night. The deterministic Canadian remains an outlier with
no wave and lake effect snow showers across the region through the
weekend.

Given the uncertainty, kept chance POPS for snow Saturday and early
Saturday night, with a drying trend by Sunday as high pressure
builds into the eastern Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. If it does snow
on Saturday it won't last, with another big warm-up suggested in
model guidance next week.

.AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A general northwesterly to northerly upslope flow will help to
keep stratus in place through mid to late afternoon for most of
the area. Clouds will scatter out from north to south, with MVFR
(IFR cigs across higher terrain) giving way to VFR flight
conditions by this evening.

High pressure will move across the area this evening, with
widespread VFR flight conditions develop tonight and lasting
through 18Z Tuesday. Winds will increase Tuesday morning, with
LLWS possible where these don't efficiently mix to the surface.

Rain showers will move in after 18Z Tuesday, with cigs lowering
to mainly MVFR with these showers.

Outlook...

VFR late.
