.SYNOPSIS...
Dry weather across the region today as high pressure builds across
the region. A low pressure system passing by to the northwest
of the area on Thursday, will provide a widespread soaking
rain and a period of strong winds.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
Satellite imagery shows skies have cleared out in most locations
except for the Eastern Lake Ontario Region. This clearing trend
will continue as a mid- level ridge builds in from the west,
however some cumulus may develop behind the clearing line.
Nudged up high temperatures for today where skies cleared out
early, with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s.

The quiet weather will continue into this evening and for most of
tonight as surface high pressure will reside overhead of the region.
However, as the surface high exits into New England later in the
night, a low pressure system over the mid-Mississippi Valley will
approach the Great Lakes and introduce mainly rain showers with a
few spots of freezing rain to the far southwestern reaches of the
area by daybreak Thursday morning. Otherwise ahead of this system,
southwest flow will strengthen and funnel in warm air into the
region. Expect lows (mid to upper 20s east of Lake Ontario, and low
to mid 30s elsewhere) to occur early tonight due to the warm air
advection regime.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/...
...STRONG WINDS POSSIBLE NORTHEAST OF LAKE ERIE THURSDAY NIGHT...

The most significant system of the week will cross the region
Thursday and Thursday night, with the main impacts being widespread
rain Thursday, then the potential for strong winds Thursday night.

A strong southern stream shortwave of Pacific origin will cross the
mid Mississippi Valley early Thursday morning, then reach the
central Great Lakes Thursday evening before moving into Quebec by
Friday morning. A moderately strong surface low will take a similar
track, passing by to our north and west. Both the mid level feature
and surface low will start to weaken as they enter Canada Thursday
night.

Rainfall...

Thursday widespread rain will move into Western NY early in the
morning, reaching the eastern Lake Ontario region by late morning to
early afternoon. The southern track of this system will allow it to
capture a plume of deep Gulf of Mexico moisture, with PWAT values
rising to over 1.0". The combination of quality moisture and strong
isentropic upglide and moisture transport enhanced by a strong 60+
knot SSW low level jet will support an area of widespread rain
moving from southwest to northeast across the area Thursday.
Overall, expect rainfall to average 0.50"-0.75" for most of the
area, a little lower across the western Finger Lakes. This will
certainly be enough to make the ground very muddy, but not enough to
raise any flooding concerns.

The warm sector of the system will arrive Thursday afternoon in
Western NY and Thursday evening across the Finger Lakes and Central
NY, with the steady rain tapering off to scattered showers.
Following the warm sector dry slot, expect another band of showers
along and ahead of the cold front to move into Western NY by early
evening, then move east across the rest of the area through the
early overnight hours.

Freezing Rain Potential...

Model guidance continues to suggest most, if not all of the rain
Thursday will fall as plain rain. Temperatures will still be close
to the freezing mark at the onset in some of the more sheltered
valleys of the Southern Tier and also across the North Country, but
at this point all guidance suggests even these areas will be on the
plus side of the freezing mark. The window for freezing rain in
these colder areas is very brief, with temperatures soaring quickly
through the day.

Wind...

A strong SSW low level jet will cross the area Thursday. This will
bring the potential for 40-50 mph gusts in the typical downslope
areas along the Lake Erie shore, with the wind likely peaking in the
afternoon after the steady rain is over. Winds will gust to 30-40
mph across the rest of the area Thursday.

The potential main event for winds will be Thursday night, along and
behind the cold front trailing the low. In a basic sense we need two
ingredients for a strong wind event...strong winds aloft, and steep
lapse rates to allow the stronger winds to mix down from aloft.
Model guidance continues to show plenty of wind aloft to support
damaging winds at the surface northeast of Lake Erie, with a belt of
60-65 knots in the boundary layer in the post-frontal airmass
extending from Lake Erie northeast across the Niagara Frontier to
Rochester.

While the winds aloft are certainly there in this case, the low
level lapse rates and potential for deep mixing is less clear cut.
There are numerous ways to achieve steep low level lapse rates to
allow for deep mixing. In this case, cold advection is rather modest
behind the cold front and does not support strong subsidence and
rapid steepening of lapse rates. This system will initially have a
decent PV intrusion, with the 1.5 PVU surface extending down below
500MB across Illinois and Michigan suggesting a tropopause fold and
better lapse rate steepening potential, but this weakens and misses
our area to the northwest. The isallobaric fall/rise couplet also
reaches peak intensity across the central Great Lakes before
weakening and missing our area to the northwest Thursday night.

The negatives mentioned above result in forecast soundings that show
only modest steepening of low level lapse rates Thursday night,
which may help to limit the full mixing potential of the strong 60+
knot winds aloft. Nonetheless, given the strong winds aloft and some
modest support for mixing overnight, there is the potential for a
marginal warning criteria wind event with gusts of around 60 mph
from the Lake Erie shore northeast across the Niagara Frontier to
the west side of Rochester. The High Wind Watch will remain in place
for Thursday night, and we added Wyoming and Monroe counties to the
watch.

Northeast of Lake Ontario, winds will become gusty later Thursday
night and early Friday morning in Jefferson County. The ongoing
weakening of the system with eastern extent brings a lower chance of
damaging winds here, with less wind aloft and even lower deep mixing
potential. Expect wind gusts on the order of 50 mph or so in
Jefferson County based on the the latest model guidance.

Friday the initial low over southern Quebec will weaken and give way
to secondary triple point/coastal cyclogenesis over the Canadian
Maritimes, allowing for winds to diminish further across the eastern
Great Lakes. A westerly flow of modestly colder air will support
some limited lake enhancement and upslope east of the lakes. It may
get cold enough for wet snow across higher terrain, with minor
accumulations possible on the Tug Hill Plateau.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Friday night a mid level shortwave and secondary cold front will
move southeast across the Great Lakes, introducing enough cold air
to support at least some lake response. Expect a band of lake effect
snow showers east of Lake Ontario in the evening to move south
overnight, breaking up into multiple bands southeast of the lake. A
few flurries or light snow showers may continue through Saturday
morning before ending. Off Lake Erie, expect lake effect and upslope
snow showers across the higher terrain east/southeast of the lake.
Temperatures and instability are marginal, and the favorable window
for lake effect is brief, so expect accumulations to be very minor.

Lake effect will end Saturday morning as high pressure builds into
the Great Lakes. This high will then remain in place across the
Great Lakes and Ohio valley Saturday afternoon through Monday,
providing a period of dry weather. Temperatures will briefly be
closer to normal Saturday before well above normal temperatures
return Sunday through next week.

A weak trough will move from the upper Great Lakes into Ontario and
Quebec Monday night and Tuesday, supporting a low chance of a few
mixed rain/snow showers.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Skies have cleared out for most of the area with VFR conditions
expected across all terminals through this evening.

Then tonight, the next low pressure system will approach the central
Great Lakes from the mid-Mississippi Valley. This will at first
reintroduce high clouds from southwest to the northeast by tonight
into Thursday. Precipitation (mostly rain, though some freezing rain
is possible in a few spots across the Southern Tier and North
Country) and low level clouds will then enter the region by daybreak
Thursday causing flight conditions to deteriorate to MVFR/IFR.

Additionally, expect breezy southwest winds ahead of the system
tonight to ramp up and become windy throughout the day Thursday and
into Thursday night.

Outlook...

Thursday Night...MVFR/IFR due to rain. Windy.
Friday and Saturday...VFR/MVFR with lingering stratus and a small
chance of rain or snow showers.
Sunday...VFR
Monday...VFR
Tuesday...Mainly VFR. A slight chance of rain showers.

Winds will gradually subside this afternoon as high pressure
builds into the Lower Great Lakes. Dropped the small craft
headlines for western Lake Ontario on the last update.

A stronger area of low pressure will move from the central Great
Lakes late Thursday to southern Quebec by Friday morning. This
system may bring gale force winds to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario from
late Thursday through early Friday. As such a Gale Watch is in place
for the outlined areas above during the Thursday night through early
Friday timeframe.
