.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Sunday night)
Issued at 232 PM CDT Sat Sep 16 2023

Key Messages:

-Rain chances through the weekend.

-Temperatures closer to seasonal norms.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms continue to develop along the sea-
breeze and outflow boundaries this afternoon becoming more scattered
into this evening. This is all thanks to a 500 mb shortwave
disturbance, moisture pooling ahead of a weak frontal boundary
slowly sagging into south Texas, and additional lift provided by the
sea-breeze and other boundaries. The 12z BRO sounding this
morning indicated a PWAT of 1.93 inches with that number expected
to exceed 2 inches across the region this afternoon. This elevated
moisture content along with slow moving storms could lead to some
localized heavy rainfall.

As the aforementioned frontal boundary continues to slowly sag south
tonight, before likely dissipating over the CWA on Sunday. Rain
chances will remain in the forecast through Sunday night though
with the NBM continuing to be a bit too robust, did lower POPs a
bit. Convection will be enhanced Sunday afternoon along the sea-
breeze once again and with PWATs around of just above 2 inches,
locally heavy rainfall will continue to be possible with any
activity that does develop.

All of Deep South Texas remains in a general thunderstorm risk
through Sunday with the northeast corner of Kenedy county
remaining in a marginal risk of excessive rainfall through
tonight.

Temperatures will not be quite as warm as we have seen in recent
weeks. Sunday highs should top out in the low to mid 90s with
overnight lows falling generally in the low to mid 70s. Heat indices
will top out in the 105-110 degree range today and closer to 105 on
Sunday thanks to elevated dewpoints, but should remain under Heat
Advisory criteria.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday through next Saturday)
Issued at 232 PM CDT Sat Sep 16 2023

Tropospheric column moisture remains healthy through Monday,
before decreasing on Tuesday. Thereafter, moisture depth should be
confined mainly below 750-800mb, which would act to reduce,
though not eliminate, rain chances. Overall, the model PoP/QPF
signal suggests a pattern of nocturnal streamer showers, with a
isolated to widely scattered sea-breeze convection each day, from
Tuesday through Friday.

GFS time-height RH sections really tell the story of the upcoming
work week, with relatively deep RH on Monday, trending steeply
downward on Tuesday, and then mostly limited to the boundary layer
thereafter. Deterministic solutions (e.g., GFS and ECMWF), in
fairly good agreement through the long-term, though ECMWF is
suggesting a little slower/"blockier" pattern in the larger scale
toward the latter half of the week. Aloft, by Monday, NW flow
ahead of an upstream ridge axis will be establishing itself.
However, it will take some time to scour out the moisture aloft,
so it looks like one more day of scattered precip coverage along
the sea-breeze, with areas east of I-69C/Hwy. 281 favored. With
the aforementioned column drying on Tuesday, PoP's fall to more
isolated...perhaps widely scattered along the coast. Moving into
Wednesday, coverage should be isolated at best, with the ridge
axis aloft nearby. By Thursday, a deep upper low moves into the
Great Basin, nudging the H5 high nearly overhead. Had to question
some of the 40-50% PoPs seen in the NBM guidance because of this,
so blended in WPC Guidance and capped off at 25-30% or so. By late
next week, if the troughing over the Great Basin moves into the
northern Rockies, our ridge flattens somewhat, increasing the
westerly wind component and drying the column a bit more. A less
progressive solution, akin to the ECMWF, would most likely lead to
a continuation of the low-grade sea- breeze pattern.

Temperature-wise, Monday should feature max temps mainly in the low
90s (except along the immediate coast), though that depends somewhat
on the extent and amounts of rainfall over the next 24-30 hours (see
above). For the rest of the week, highs will once again run
approximately 3-5 degrees above normal (which is roughly 92F at BRO
and 94F at MFE) across the RGV, and near to slightly above normal on
overnight min temps. Heat indices touch 103-107F by Thursday, but
should remain safely below Heat Advisory criterion.

Astronomical high tides increase late next week, so will have to
keep an on possible minor coastal flooding. NOAA's monthly high tide
flooding outlook places that probability at 5-10% along the Lower
Texas coast next Friday-Saturday.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1220 PM CDT Sat Sep 16 2023

VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the TAF period. A
frontal boundary sagging southward into Deep South Texas through
the period along with the sea-breeze and remnant boundaries from
earlier storms and ones that could develop later will keep
precipitation chances in the forecast through Sunday. With any
precipitation, periods of lowered visibility are possible (MVFR
and even brief IFR) along with the threat for gusty winds and
cloud-to-lightning.

&&

.MARINE...
Issued at 232 PM CDT Sat Sep 16 2023

Now through Sunday night...An unsettled weather pattern will
continue into Sunday leading to periods of showers and thunderstorms
on the waters off the lower Texas coast through the weekend. This
activity could produce localed areas of hazardous marine conditions
including, elevated seas, gusty winds, heavy rainfall and cloud-
ground lighting. Outside these areas, generally favorable conditions
are expected with wave heights will of 1 to 2 feet with a wave
period of 3 to 5 seconds.

Monday through Friday...Modest surface high pressure, along with
a stationary front draped across the northern Gulf, should act to
maintain mainly light onshore flow through the period. With no
swell trains in sight, Gulf seas run 2-3 ft., so no Small Craft
Advisories or Exercise Caution conditions are anticipated.
Mariners should be aware of isolated to scattered showers and
thunderstorms occurring periodically. &&
