.SYNOPSIS...
After a few brief evening snow showers...dry and chilly weather
is expected tonight into Monday afternoon. A plowable snowfall
is then expected Monday night through Tuesday, although exact
snowfall amounts are still uncertain thinking the higher amounts
occur across interior Massachusetts and Connecticut. A brief
period of dry weather is likely Wednesday, but the weather
pattern remains active/unsettled, with more precipitation
possible Wed night into early Thu, and again Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
915 PM Update:

Minor adjustments for the evening update to reflect current radar
and temperature trends. First, regional radar continues to show
light precipitation falling across northeast Massachusetts,
though the returns across western Massachusetts is not making it
to the ground. Previous observation in Portsmouth, NH have light
snow falling, did extend slight chance POPs into Essex County to
account for those trends at least for the next two to three
hours. Also, blended in latest RAP/HRRR temperatures which
captures the cold pool of air that is infiltrating northeast
Massachusetts. Outside of those minor adjustments our quiet
night follow as forecast, see the previous discussion below.

Previous Discussion...

* A few brief snow showers into mid evening; otherwise dry &
  seasonably cold tonight with lows in the teens/20s

* Sunshine gives way to clouds Mon with highs middle-upper 30s

Tonight...

A cold front crosses this region this evening with enough
shortwave energy to produce a few brief snow showers.
However...given temps have risen above freezing do not think
there will be much of an impact on roadways outside the highest
terrain. Otherwise...dry and seasonably chilly air works into
the region tonight. We should see at least partial clearing with
overnight lows bottoming out in the middle to upper teens in
parts of western and north central MA...to mainly the 20s
elsewhere. A bit of a northwest breeze for the first part of the
night...but that should gradually diminish after midnight.

Monday...

A ridge of high pressure moving eastward across Quebec will
result in chilly Monday. Meanwhile...low pressure over the
north central Plains will move eastward and into Ohio later
Monday. While our region will remain dry during the day
Monday...we will see sunshine early give way to increasing and
thickening during the afternoon. High temps will be in the
middle to upper 30s...which is a tad below normal for this time
of year. However...rather light winds will make it feel not too
bad outside for this time of year.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Plowable Snowfall Monday night into Tue but exact amounts will
  be determined by how quickly shortwave weakens on approach

* Higher snowfall amounts likely further southwest as well as
  the east slopes of the Berks & perhaps Worcester/RI Hills too

* Main concern is for the Tue AM Commute despite snow (or mixed
  snow/rain on coast) continuing temps rise above freezing

Details...

Monday night and Tuesday...

1) Overview & Timing...

The main focus of this forecast remains a shortwave approaching
from the west Monday night. As this happens the forcing for
ascent will increase and snow will develop. We expect snow to
develop across interior MA/CT and much of RI in the 7 to 11 pm
and into eastern MA between 10 pm and 2 am. Snow will then
falls overnight into Tuesday impacting the morning commute.
Snow will continue through Tuesday afternoon although may mix
with or change to rain across portions of the coastal plain. In
fact...temps across most of the region will rise above freezing
so roadways should not be as much of a problem for the Tuesday
afternoon commute. We will break things down a bit more below.

The main issue with this forecast is the upper level system is
de-amplifying as it moves eastward into our region as it runs
into upper level confluent flow. You can see this nicely in the
700/850 mb wind fields along with the weakening omega fields.
The global models seem to do this quicker than some of the high
resolution models/HREF. How quickly this happens will determine
the specific snowfall amounts...but there should be a southwest
to northeast gradient of lowering snowfall totals.

2) Expected Snowfall Totals & Impacts...

Current thinking is enough forcing will remain for a plowable
snowfall across the entire region. We do think that the highest
amounts will be along the east slopes of the Berks...given
their furthest west and also will benefit from some upslope
enhancement. We maintained the Winter Storm Watch in this region
for the potential of 5 to 9 inches of snow. Meanwhile...hoisted
a Winter Weather Advisory for the rest of the region for a
plowable snow. Expecting a general 3 to 6 inches of snow across
CT/RI and central MA with 2 to 5 inches across eastern MA as
well as the Cape/Islands. If some of the high resolution models
turn out to be correct and the shortwave weakens slower...we
will probably need to upgrade to Winter Storm Warnings for a
good portion of the region. Since we are right on the cusp of a
high end advisory/low end warning...so something for the next
shifts to keep in mind. This is especially true along the east
slopes of the Berks and even the Hills of RI/CT...where some
upslope enhancement may come into play.

Regardless of specific amounts...the main impact will be to the
Tuesday morning commute. While snow will continue Tue afternoon
with an inverted trough enhancement...temps will rise above
freezing outside the highest terrain. Therefore...roadways will
likely be less of an issue with prior treatments and late
February sun angle. In fact...boundary layer may even become
warm enough for Ptype to mix with or change to rain for a time
along portions of the coastal plain.

This is not expecting to be a particularly wet snow until late
in the event in the lower elevations. And while we will see a
period of 25 to 40 mph wind gusts on the coast...not concerned
about power outages being much of an issue.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Highlights:

* Dry and seasonable weather returns on Wednesday before
  precipitation returns on Thursday, mostly in the form of light
  rain.

* Monitoring a potential winter storm for Friday into Saturday.

Details...

Tuesday night through Thursday...

A mid level ridge builds in Tuesday night with high pressure at the
surface. The ridge axis crosses southern New England Wednesday
afternoon, and this should provide us with a dry day for most of
Wednesday featuring light winds and normal to even just above normal
high temperatures. Most locations will experience temperatures in
the mid to upper 40s. By Wednesday evening moisture begins to round
the ridge ahead of a northern stream shortwave which passes to our
north Wed night/Thu. This will kick off some scattered showers as
early as Wednesday evening but the better chance comes overnight
into Thursday as a warm front lifts north through the region.
Depending on the magnitude of warm advection and the timing of the
cold front on Thursday, temps could get decently warmer than normal,
into the upper 40s and low 50s. Thus, outside of the highest
elevations of NW Massachusetts any precip that falls should be in
the form of rain. The 30-40 kt low level jet overhead will not only
provide forcing for ascent but will make for some gusty winds,
mainly over the waters and along the coast.

Friday through the weekend...

Uncertainty increases beyond Thursday but all eyes are on the
potential for an impactful winter storm in the Friday/Saturday
timeframe. A deep cutoff mid level low over Texas on Thursday night
will eject into the vicinity of New England by late Friday, and the
track will be key in determining if this brings us significant
snowfall, a wintry mix, or nothing at all. While we are still 5 days
out global guidance only recently came into agreement in showing a
New England snowstorm during this period (with the ECMWF indicating
a similar solution to what the GFS has been depicting fairly
consistently). At this juncture we will lean on a blend of ensemble
guidance. The EPS indicates a >50% chance of 6+inches in interior MA
while the GEFS is more in the 30-50% range. Certainly one of the
better signals we've seen so far this winter, but there remains a
large spread in the ensemble member low tracks, so take it with a
grain of salt. Stay tuned.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06z TAF Update:

Through 12z...High confidence.

Mostly VFR, sct'd areas of MVFR across eastern MA and northern
CT into western MA. NW to N wind 5 to 10 kts. Gust to 20 kts
for Cape & Island terminals.

Monday...High confidence.

VFR. Increasing clouds throughout the late morning and afternoon
with lowest ceilings 040 to 060 generally after 18z. N wind becoming
SE then E 5 to 10 kts.

Monday Night and Tuesday...High confidence.

Snow develops across western MA/CT between 00z and 03z and reaches
eastern MA between 04z and 06z Tuesday. This will result in IFR to
LIFR conditions developing and continuing into Tuesday afternoon.

Between two and six inches of snow is expected on airport runways
with highest amounts expected as one heads west. While snow will
continue through the afternoon temperatures rising above freezing
should limit the impacts on runways, especially along the coastal
plain where precipitation type may mix with or even change to rain
for a time.

Winds generally NE later Monday night into Tuesday with some 20 to
30 kt gusts developing for a time along the coast during the day
Tuesday. Perhaps up to 35 knots across parts of the Cape/Nantucket.

Small craft northwest wind gusts develop across most open
waters tonight behind this evening/s cold front. Winds shift to
