system will bring a wintry mix of snow and ice this afternoon
into Friday, especially across northern Massachusetts with
mainly rain near the coast. Precipitation likely changes to snow

much of the upcoming weekend with seasonable temperatures. A
strong coastal storm impacts the region late Sunday into early
next week. Drier on Tuesday, but the active pattern continues
as another system moves in mid to late in the week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1015 AM Update...

* Main Concern for accumulating snow/sleet and slippery travel
  will be north of Route 2 and in the high terrain later today

No significant changes to the prior forecast. Deep closed low
over the Great Lakes will send a piece of shortwave energy
northeast into our region. In response...strong forcing for
ascent will result in widespread precipitation overspreading the
region from west to east between noon and 4 pm. Ptype remains
the most difficult portion of this forecast with nearly
isothermal soundings...so a small model error will make a big
difference in the outcome. Thinking is the bulk of the
accumulating snow will be north of Route 2 in MA and especially
at the NH border. There is pretty strong forcing and good
snowgrowth as well...so 1 inch per hour snowfall rates will be
possible near the NH border if Ptype is snow. However...it will
be close with heavy sleet also possible in this region. Either
way travel might be difficult this evening north of Route 2 and
in the high terrain with snow/sleet.

South or Route 2...rain and sleet with perhaps some wet snow
flakes mixed in near and north of I-90. However...temps above
freezing and Ptype leaning more towards rain do not think there
will be much of an impact.

Today...

* A wintry mix overspreads NW CT into northern MA this afternoon
* Slippery travel across this region, especially high terrain

Any dim sunshine early this morning, gives way to increasing clouds
followed by WAA precip overspreading the region from west to east
this afternoon. The lack of cold air across the area results in
ptype mainly rain across RI and southeast MA. Although, some sleet
may mix in with the rain here at the onset per model soundings.
However, across northern CT into northern MA, model soundings
indicate the column is marginally cold enough for a mix of snow and
sleet, potentially more sleet than snow. This may result in some
slippery travel for the late day commute with a minor snow/sleet
accumulation. This includes the Hartford, Springfield to Worcester
to northeast MA. Could even have a few hours of snow/sleet mix in
Boston. However, with surface temps in the mid 30s, accumulations
will be difficult and more likely on non paved surfaces. Given
marginal surface temps, greatest risk for minor accumulation/snow
covered roads would be in the higher elevations.

Across northern MA, especially toward the NH border, model soundings
become isothermal, suggesting a period of moderate to heavy snow
possible, beginning around 21z. Difficult forecast here, not much
marginal for error with isothermal soundings. If models are off by a
deg, could be the difference between heavy sleet vs heavy wet snow.
Nonetheless, greatest risk of snow covered roads and slippery travel
late this afternoon is across northern MA to the NH border,
especially the hilly terrain where temps will be closer to freezing.
Snow accumulations very difficult to predict given marginal
soundings and risk of sleet. Preliminary thinking is 2-4" possible
along the MA/NH border by 00z, with a coating to 2 inches southward
to the Mass Pike.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...

Tonight and Friday...

* Wintry mix for northern MA, possibly heavy snow along the MA/NH
  border

* Mainly a rain event for CT/RI and southeast MA

Despite secondary surface low tracking along the south coast or just
offshore, 700 mb low traverses north of the region and 850 mb
circulation develops over the area. This promotes warm tongue around
800 mb to advect northward and yields ptype of mainly rain for CT/RI
and southeast MA. Farther northward, as 850 mb circulation traverses
northern MA, it cuts off warm air from surging northward, supporting
ptype of sleet and/or snow across northern MA.

As low/mid level southerly jet moves across the area during the
evening, supporting a burst of heaviest precip 00z-06z from west to
east. As mentioned above ptype mainly rain for CT/RI and southeast
MA, and heavy at times may result in minor poor drainage/street
flooding. However across northern MA, warm layer around 800 mb
combined with surface temps at or below freezing along and north of
the Mass Pike, and along and west of I495, will yield a wintry mix
of sleet and freezing rain. Closer to the MA/NH border, cold air is
deeper and may support a period of moderate to heavy snow. Dry slot
arrives after 06z, changing precip over to freezing drizzle. Before
the changeover, snow totals of 4-7 inches are possible across
northern MA, highest totals along the MA/NH border. If more sleet
mixes in, totals will be closer to 4 inches, however if ptype is
mainly snow, totals closer to 7 inches. Given isothermal soundings,
potential for heavy wet snow along/near the MA/NH border. If this
materializes, low risk for snow load issues, including possible
power outages.

Given the above reasoning, will continue the previous configuration
of winter weather advisories, but expand the advisory into coastal
Essex county and southeast Middlesex, given several hours of snow
and sleet are likely, possibly accumulating 1-4 inches.

Friday...

* Light snow likely across most of the region

Secondary surface low moves offshore, shifting winds from NE to N.
This combined with height falls from approaching mid level low,
entire column cools, supporting ptype of light snow across most of
the region, except Cape Cod and the Islands, where ptype may remain
rain. Snow intensity will be light and combined with surface temps
above freezing, not expecting much travel impact. Highs in the 30s,
except low 40s Cape Cod and the Islands. Although, it will feel
colder given blustery NE to N winds 10-20 mph.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Highlights

* Light snow tapers off late Friday into the pre-dawn hours
  Saturday. Dry for much of the weekend with near to above
  temperatures.

* Strong coastal storm late Sunday through Monday. Still need to
  hone in on the exact track/impacts. At this point the highest risk
  impact wise are strong winds/gusts, coastal flooding and
  accumulating snow across parts of the interior.

* Drier weather on Tuesday. Potential for another coastal storm mid
  to late in the week.

Friday night...

Cyclonic flow in place with the trough offshore lifting further
offshore.  A subtle shortwave will dig into and through southern New
England by early Saturday, while a ridge builds over the central
Great Lakes/Ontario. A surface trough will slide through into the
pre-dawn hours Saturday.

Will have snow taper off from northwest to southeast as the surface
trough slides through. Still anticipating that there will be light
accumulation as things are winding down. At this point appears there
could be anywhere from a dusting to roughly 1 inch of snow before
things completely end. Expect the 1 inch total to be most likely
toward the higher terrain.

Colder air advects into southern New England as winds become
northerly. This will bring 925 hPa temps down to -3 to -7 degrees
Celsius. The result will be low temps heading into Saturday in the
20s for most.

Saturday through much of Sunday...

Ridge axis over the central Great Lakes/Ontario early on Saturday
builds into the eastern Great Lakes/Quebec by late Saturday. The
ridge builds into and through New England on Sunday. High pressure
builds over the region Saturday and offshore on Sunday.

Dry and quiet weather anticipated through much of this period with
high pressure dominating. Expecting temps to be much more seasonable
on Saturday and into early Sunday. Will have N to NW flow on
Saturday with 925 hPa temps of -2 to -6 degrees Celsius. The result
will be highs on Saturday in the 30s. Will have increasing clouds
into Sunday ahead of our next system, but should remain dry for most
into the afternoon. Flow shifts to a SW/S direction, which advects 0
to +4 degree Celsius air at 925 hPa. The result will be highs
ranging from the mid 30s to the mid/upper 40s.

Late Sunday through Monday...

Strong coastal storm to impact southern New England early next week.
Will have a slightly negatively tilted trough over the Mid/Upper
Mississippi River Valley early on Sunday lift into the OH
Valley/central Great Lakes by late Sunday. The trough lifts into the
Mid Atlantic/eastern Great Lakes early/mid Monday before swinging
through New England late on Monday. Low pressure develops over the
Carolinas/Appalachians late on Sunday and deepens over the Mid
Atlantic/New England on Monday as it moves through.

Still a considerable amount of uncertainty in the exact track and
how quickly the storm moves through the region. This is still
evident via the spread of MSLP low locations per the GEPS/GEFS/EPS
guidance. If the storm tracks a bit more inland it would result in a
higher wind risk and less accumulating snow, whereas a track a bit
further offshore would bring more accumulating snow and lower the
wind risk. At this point given the spread am not certain on where to
hedge the forecast. Will note that probabilities of 1+ inches of
snow continue to increase across the higher terrain from run to run
per the NBM. At this point have roughly 20-80 percent chances of 1+
inches of snow and 10-50 percent chances of 4+ inches of snow, again
across the higher terrain.

Generally have stuck with the NBM at this point in time. However,
given the deep low and its track do think that there is a good shot
to tap into strong and perhaps damaging wind gusts. Ensemble SATA
tables show roughly 1-2 STD above model climatology for winds later
on Sunday through Monday. Could perhaps see a 30-70+ kt S/SSE low
level jet as the low is lifting through early/mid Monday. The track
will be key because if the storm moves more offshore this jet also
pushes offshore. At this point am more confident in the strong winds
with the W to NW flow in wake of the system where we could see 30-
50+ kt winds in place. Should not be difficult to mix this down with
the colder air advecting in. Given the setup did opt to bump up wind
speeds/gusts toward the NBM90th percentile.

As is typically the case the timing of these strongest winds/gusts
will be key. We do have high astronomical tides during this
timeframe as BOS will be between 10-11.7 ft MLLW . Given surface
winds shift to a S/SE direction it is not out of the question there
could be coastal flood issues. This is also the case for ACK as
astro tides will be 3-4.15 ft. Early indications from the Stevens
Institute guidance showing at least a solid minor for early Monday,
but will be highly dependent on timing the system swinging through.

Tuesday...

Ridge axis builds in behind the departing system. This will allow
the surface high to build overhead. The result will be drier weather
on Tuesday. Not out of the question it still could be a bit breezy,
but will be dependent on how quickly the pressure gradient relaxes.
Will be a bit cooler with high temps ranging from the upper 30s to
the mid 40s.

Wednesday and Thursday...

Looking almost like a repeat of the Sunday/Monday system as a deep
trough lifts into the Great Lakes region. Could see a coastal system
swinging through, but timing/location/intensity is uncertain at this
time. Could still see the risk of strong winds, coastal flooding and
accumulating snow. However, still a lot of uncertainty especially
given we are talking Day 7+. Have stuck with the NBM guidance at
this point in time.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

18Z TAF Update...

This afternoon and tonight...Moderate Confidence.

Widespread precipitation was overspreading the region from the
west through 20z/21z. Conditions lower to MVFR by late
afternoon/early evening with IFR conditions thereafter. Light
winds late this afternoon will shift to the NNE at 5 to 15 knots
later this evening. Some gusts of 20 to 25 knots will be
possible along the coast.

Ptype will mainly be rain south of I-90 with some sleet pellets
mixed in at times this afternoon and early evening. There may
also be some wet snow flakes mixed in near the MA Turnpike. The
main risk for accumulating snow and sleet will be near and
especially north of Route 2. It is a close call between snow and
sleet in this region...but a period of 1 inch per hour snowfall
rates will be possible if ptype is mainly snow into this
evening. There also could be localized areas of freezing
rain...but that should mainly be confined to the high terrain of
the Berks and Worcester Hills.

The bulk of this first round of mixed precipitation will exit
the region overnight. Just spotty lighter precipitation will
linger toward daybreak.

Friday...Moderate Confidence.

Low end MVFR-IFR conditions persist on Friday. N winds of 5 to
15 knots with some 20 to 25 knot gusts possible at times near
the eastern MA coast/Cape and Nantucket.

Second round of precpitation impacts the region. Thinking this
will mainly be mixed rain/snow transitioning to all snow from
northwest to southeast. Most of this snow from the second round
of precipitation should be light. This coupled with marginal
temps probably limit impacts on runways other than a small
slushy accumulation. We may see an additional inch or two in
spots from this second round of snow with the best chance near
and north of I-90.

Friday night...High Confidence.

Any lingering light snow showers/flurries should diminish in the
evening. MVFR conditions may dominate with stubborn low
clouds...but some locations may improve to VFR especially near
daybreak Saturday. NNW winds of 5 to 15 knots.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate Confidence in TAF. Main issue will be
rain arriving into late afternoon; which will be mixed with
sleet at times into early this evening. A few wet snow flakes
may be mixed in at as well, but ptype will mainly be rain
tonight. Second round of precipitation transitions to mainly
light snow Fri morning into the afternoon...but probably not
more than a small slushy accumulation on the runways.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate Confidence in TAF. Rain and sleet will
impact the terminal into early this evening, but little impact
with temps above freezing. Ptype will then mainly be rain this
evening. Second round of precipitation transitions to mainly
light snow Fri morning into the afternoon...but probably not
more than a small slushy accumulation on the runways.

Outlook /Saturday through Monday/...

Saturday through Saturday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR
possible.

Sunday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Breezy. Chance
RA.

Sunday Night: Mainly IFR, with areas MVFR possible. Strong
winds with areas of gusts up to 40 kt. RA likely, SN likely.

Monday: Mainly VFR, with local IFR possible. Strong winds with
gusts up to 45 kt. RA likely, chance SN.

Friday...low pressure moves offshore, with winds shifting from NE in
the morning to North in the afternoon. Wind speeds 15-20 kt, gusts
up to 25 kt at times. Vsby limited in light snow northern MA waters,
rain likely southern MA waters.

40 kt. Local rough seas. Rain likely. Local visibility 1 to

* Coastal Flood Advisory Plymouth county northward Fri AM

High astronomical tides Friday morning combined with a storm surge
of 1-1.5 ft from low pressure tracking along or near the south
coast, will result in minor coastal flooding from Plymouth county
northward to the MA/NH border. South of Plymouth county winds not as
strong given proximity of coastal low pressure. ETSS and Steven's
Institute storm surge were followed closely here. NE winds 15-25 mph
Fri morning.
