.SYNOPSIS...
Increasing cloudiness tonight will set the stage for a cloudy,
cooler and wet weekend. Steady light rain develops with an
initial weak storm system Saturday and Saturday evening, with a
brief break in the rains for overnight into early Sunday.
However soaking rains then return late Sunday into Monday
morning, then drying out Monday afternoon. Tuesday through the
end of next week gives off deja vu vibes with daily chance of
isolated to widely scattered rain due to an cutoff low parked
over New England.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
145 AM update...
Spotty light rain across SW CT with steadier rainfall further
SW across SE NY. Pronounced dry air below 700 mb eroding leading
edge of rain, but toward daybreak may see some spotty light
rain getting into Hartford county and portions of SW MA. Dry
rest of SNE. Stratus and patchy fog has dissipated over outer
Cape and Nantucket. Main risk for lower clouds will be east of
New Eng, but can't rule out some stratus and patchy fog
developing across NE MA.
Previous discussion...
Leading edge of some light rain has moved into SW CT but precip
is rather light and falling from high based ceilings. Lots of
dry air below 700 mb through the night which will result in a
lot of the precip eroding as it attempts to lift NE into the
region. Most of the night will remain dry with just a low risk
for some light showers moving into western CT and SW MA toward
daybreak. Much of the guidance holds on to the low level dry air
for much of the day Sat, especially in the east so have lowered
PoPs here a bit. Will evaluate 00z guidance suite but PoPs may
need further downward adjustment on Saturday if these trends
continue.
Otherwise, will have to watch for patchy fog and stratus
advecting in from the east. Stratus has moved into ACK and CQX
and some of the hi-res guidance indicates these lower clouds
will back into the Cape and possibly portions of E/NE MA.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
345 PM Update:
Saturday and Saturday Night:
Rather dreary, crummy weekend begins early on Sat, with the
first of two disturbances expected to bring overcast conditions,
onshore east breezes, steady rain and areas of mist/fog takes
hold of Southern New England. Steady light rain should be
ongoing across the Berkshires and into adjacent Hartford County
early Sat, then expanding gradually ENE as the day wears on.
Rain should begin around mid to late morning across RI and
central MA, then into the early to mid aftn across eastern MA.
Steadiest rains areawide should be greatest between Sat aftn
and Sat evening when the column fully saturates, with deeper
moisture values/PWATs reaching anywhere from three quarters to
just under 1 inch. At least this lead system is progressive and
duration of rains should be shorter and the rain rates
themselves should be on the light side as well. SE component
will also favor sporadic/locally greater rain totals against the
eastern slopes of the Berkshires and on the eastern side of
hilly areas in western RI, eastern CT and central MA. Utilized
WPC's QPF for this initial system, with rain amts from a third
to half-inch for most, though locally up to two-thirds of an
inch in the favored upslope-enhanced areas.
Later Saturday evening into the overnight, steady rain and
mist/fog is likely to continue for eastern MA and RI, while
precip character turns more intermittent and even drizzly across
the interior, as we get into a brief break between this system
and a somewhat stronger and likely wetter system looking into
Sunday.
Highs Sat only in the upper 40s to the lower to mid 50s, with
lows also only falling a few degrees from the daytime highs
given the onshore breezes and abundant overcast.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...
* Soaking rain late Sunday into Monday with the passage of a
surface low pressure system.
* Warmer for Monday along with drying conditions and gusts west to
northwest during the afternoon.
* Daily chances for isolated to widely scattered rain return Tuesday
through late next week due to a cutoff low over New England. Also,
temperatures return to near normal or slightly below normal for
the remainder of the week.
Overview...
The synoptic set up has an anomalous mid-level trough and cutoff low
over the eastern third of the CONUS Sunday morning through early
next week. Similar to this week, a mid-level ridge of high pressure
over the Atlantic becomes a 'blocking feature' keeping the cutoff
low parked over New England well into next week. This will have
people experiencing a bit of deja vu. It is not until late next week
the cutoff low is kicked east and out to sea.
Precipitation...
WPC places southern New England under a marginal risk for excessive
rainfall for Sunday 12z to Monday 12z, just to our north the
Seacoast of New Hampshire into southern Maine is under a slight
risk. After a brief lull Sunday morning a surge of of higher PWATs
are advected north by the LLJ. PWATs do increase to a range of 1.25"
and 1.5". That said, moderate to heavy rain redevelops mid afternoon
with the approach of a surface low pressure system in conjunction of
better jet dynamics/shortwave. Continued the mention of thunder in
the grids as values of MUCAPE are between 100 and 300 J/kg. The area
with the highest chance of thunder would be over the southern
waters, BID, MVY, ACK, CHH. Rain ends from southwest to northeast
some time during the predawn hours with drier air punching into the
mid-levels.
12z ensembles still have some disagreement of how much rain the
region may receive. The GFS and Canadian ensembles have agreement
with 40 to 60 percent chance of northeast Massachusetts receiving
over an inch and above 80 percent of receiving over 0.5 inch across
all of southern New England. The EURO ensemble, a bit more robust,
suggests all of southern New England sees at least 0.5 inch with a
greater than 90 percent probability. When you look at the
probability greater than an inch, the probabilities decrease to a
range between 60 and 90 percent. In addition, a low probability
between 20 and 30 percent of receiving at least two inches are
found across the higher terrain of the Berkshires and northern Rhode
Island and points north/northeast into southern New Hampshire.
For now, our forecast calls for a widespread 1.0 to 1.5 inches of
rainfall with locally higher amounts for 12z Sunday to 12z
Monday. Similar to last weekend, we will monitor the potential
for any poor drainage and urban flooding, and rises on smaller
creeks/streams.
Second half of Monday does dry out, with breaks of sun possible by
the mid to late afternoon. And as advertised, the week ahead will
give you a bit of deja vu. Another mid-level cutoff low is
stuck over New England which provides steep lapse rates and
periodic periods of showers/small graupel or hail, especially
during the afternoon.
Temperatures...
Given the amount of cloud cover and southeast flow temperatures on
Sunday will be cooler than normal with highs 55-60 degrees. Monday
there is a good chance it will be the warmest day of next week given
the cold pool is still located to the west of southern New England
and highs Monday are seasonable for early May, low to middle 60s.
As for the rest of the week temperatures remain at or slight below
normal this weekend and into the week ahead. Afternoon highs are
generally in the upper-50s to 60F and overnight lows are in the 40s
and low 50s. This lines up with CPC's outlook for the next 6 to 10
days, a 50 to 60 percent chance for temperatures to be likely below
average.
Wind...
While it will be gusty Sunday into Monday we do not expect any
significant winds due to an low level inversion. 925mb winds are out
of the southeast between 45 and 55 knots. The EURO is a bit more
robust with winds approaching 60 knots. But, the inversion below the
LLJ will inhibit the full potential to mix down to the surface. That
said, southeast gusts between 15 to 30 mph, higher gusts near the
coast would not be out of the question. Wind shift Monday afternoon
will advect warmer temperatures and erode the surface inversion.
Winds aloft are 25 to 35 knots which will be more effectively mixed
down to the surface Monday afternoon.
